The overriding task of the machine is to collect data on the places it visits and the organisms it meets, and its purely scientific and logical approach to many issues often irritates Marek, which is why he gives vent to dialogues with a solid dose of humor. An important figure is also the scientist's brother - Major Sergeant Don Leslie, a former Marine and a veteran of the Vietnam War.
