Assassin Shay Patrick Cormac is sent on a mission to assassinate a dangerous Templar target in his home village. He learns that the target he seeks is actually an Assassin who had been posing as a Templar. The two struggle and both fall off a cliff; Cormac survives, but the other assassin apparently dies from his injuries. With no one else to blame, Cormac leaves the Assassins and becomes a hunted man by his former brothers-in-arms. After killing many more Templars, Cormac comes across a group of templars led by a man named George Monro. Monro reveals that he has a Piece of Eden, which he claims allows him to track down any item or person in existence with just a single drop of blood; Cormac uses it to find out where his old friend Liam O'Brien has gone and kills him in front of his wife and daughter while they were having dinner at O'Brien's house. Afterward, Cormac is confronted by William Johnson who tells him that he will hunt him down after learning that Cormac killed several of his men including Liam O'Brien. Ubisoft expands upon the naval mechanics of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag by setting sail with the Morrigan and exploring the North Atlantic ocean or narrow river valleys across the East Coast of America.
Enemy vessels are now more difficult to defend against, and new weapons have been added that will allow players to board other ships. Players can also ram their ships into ice sheets in order to discover hidden locations.
