Warrington: From New Town to New City? - Janice Hayes - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Warrington: From New Town to New City? - Janice Hayes - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Warrington is a town with a long history and a future shaped by its designation as a New Town in 1968. Over the last half century, the landscape and lives of its inhabitants have changed dramatically. Older residents of the former Lancashire industrial town barely recognise the town of their youth, while incomers and younger residents only know life in a thriving Cheshire centre with ambitions to be seen as a city.During the last fifty years there have been major changes to the demographic of the area and the built environment by creating new communities and bringing former Lancashire and Cheshire villages within the town, which has effectively trebled in size. The redundant Second World War sites of Risley munitions works and the former military bases at Burtonwood and Padgate have been redeveloped. Already some of the townscape created in the 1980s as a result of the New Town plan is being rebuilt, and by 2019 a new local plan will finalise the next stage of redevelopment.Warrington: From New Town to New City? is based on a community-wide local history project to create a permanent record of these crucial years in the town’s development. It will involve oral history to capture the memories of those who remember the town from the pre-1960 era or who were involved in the New Town planning, or saw their area change drastically as a result. It will also capture the memories and images of the New Town over the last fifty years and be a mixture of official records and community contributions from old and young alike. This fascinating book reveals Warrington’s transformation from post-war austerity to twenty-first-century prosperity through the extensive photographic archive, records held by Culture Warrington and the memories and family archives of Warringtonians themselves.

Edinburgh New Town - Robert Dalziel - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Edinburgh’s New Town, built between 1767 and 1850, is one of Europe’s finest neoclassical neighbourhoods, a triumph of town planning, with UNESCO World Heritage status. But the importance of the New Town goes far beyond the quality of its architecture. Nearly 250 years after it was built, today it is not only a carefully conserved Georgian neighbourhood but a vibrant community in which people from all walks of life thrive in harmonious surroundings. Those include over 7,000 residential properties of enormous variety, and its shops, schools, pubs, restaurants and community facilities, which contribute to its unique quality of life and attract visitors from around the world. This book celebrates the history and achievements of the New Town. Through photos, drawings, historic maps and aerial photography, the authors explore the New Town’s origins in the philiosophy of the Enlightenment and the role of politics, land ownership, finance, design and materials in its development. This is a friendly and accessible introduction to the exteriors and interiors of its buildings, with a walking tour included, drawing on both historic maps and modern satellite images. It links the New Town to current debates on urban architecture, concluding that it is an inspiring model for new communities around the world. This is a book for the passionate, knowledgeable lover of Georgian architecture, but equally for the casual visitor who wants to get to know the New Town better.

London: A Modern City in Photographs - Mathew Browne - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

London: A Modern City in Photographs - Mathew Browne - Bog - Amberley Publishing - Plusbog.dk

London has been transformed in the last two or three decades since the 1990s. Large areas have been rebuilt and regenerated and exciting new buildings have reshaped London’s skyline. Many of the modern high-rise buildings have quickly become synonymous with London, with popular names that reflect their bold design – the Shard, the Gherkin, the Walkie-Talkie. Alongside these new office buildings and residential developments are other landmark buildings celebrating arts, sports and entertainment, such as Tate Modern, the O2 Arena built for the Millennium celebrations and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Large areas of East London and the Docklands have been redeveloped, as well as more everyday buildings throughout the capital, with new and rebuilt mainline and Underground railway stations, museums, sporting venues, urban spaces and housing. In this book photographer Mathew Browne celebrates this new face of London in a collection of stunning images which portray not just the new buildings that characterise modern London, often cheek by jowl with an older London, but also how today’s Londoners are changing and adapting their environment, turning old structures into new uses. For all those who are proud to live and work in London, as well as those visiting, this book is a must. Look through these photographs and you will quickly see why this ever-changing city never ceases to fascinate.
