Since 1965, the Association for Goldsmiths’ Art and the German Goldsmiths’ House Hanau have been organising the Silver Triennial International to promote contemporary silversmithing. The 20th competition demonstrates the variety of works at a high level: 121 silversmiths from 21 countries submitted hollow- and flatware or free-formed works. The focus is not only on technical and artistic aspects; a large number of the entries also have a socio-critical and contemporary historical background. An expert jury was again assembled this year: Dirk Allgaier, head of Arnoldsche Art Publishers, Stuttgart; Dr. Claudia Banz, curator for design at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin; and JaKyung Shin, silversmith and assistant professor at Seoul National University, Korea, selected 67 impressive silver works. Scandinavian studio jewellery is simply unimaginable without Tone Vigeland (b.1938) and her work. Her distinctive objects flatter the human body and captivate through their dimensions and volume, yet they are assembled from the tiniest hand-crafted components. Tubes of silver wire, precisely cut plates, spheres and eyelets, all in small scale, are invisibly interconnected, and Vigeland''s use of heavily oxidised, almost iron-black silver and steel is a typical feature. The result: art on the human body - highly aesthetic, perfectly executed and always wearable. Around 150 jewellery objects from 1958 to 2010 document Tone Vigeland''s pioneering creativity. They are complemented with a selection of objects and sculptures from 1998 to the present day, which can now be seen in an exhibition and publication for the very first time. Jewellery and object artist Anton Cepka (1936) is one of the most important jewellery artists of the twentieth century and a protagonist of the so-called studio jewellery movement, which arose after the Second World War. Today he is considered the doyen of Slovakian and Czech jewellery designers. Whitened silver, optical glass, stones and modern acrylic glass are Anton Cepka''s preferred materials. His jewellery and his objects as he himself says ''bear all the signs of today. At the same time they express the reflection of today''s over-engineered world.'' Movement and light unexpectedly come into play in these pieces; thus kinetic art enters jewellery art for the first time in a conceptual way. Aerotechnical, fragile futuristic forms, the colour of the whitened silver and titles such as Radar, Antenna, Airplane, Satellite and Planet reflect the current, technological advancement and reference of our times. Since the beginning of his creative work in 1980, Georg Dobler, the jewellery artist and lecturer at the University of Applied Arts and Science in Hildesheim, has engaged in working with geometrical forms. Also in the mid 1980s, when he first drew on naturalistic elements, provoking an outcry in the jewellery world, his work was still bound by geometrical dimensions. It was exactly because naturalism was viewed as outmoded, however, that Dobler was viewed as a pioneer by the next generation of auteur jewellery designers.The artist complements his casts from nature (exotic plants and beetles) - Dobler sees himself as a collector of structures and forms - with large, facetted stones as an artistic addition. Yellow to orange-glowing lemon citrine and tender lilac amethysts combine with the metal surfaces to create a shimmering play of colours. Pure silver is seldom found in Dobler''s work; his trademark is rather black chromium or oxidized silver surfaces that shine in iridescent black.Georg Dobler is not only a pioneer, he also finds inspiration among the great artists of early modern art. Thus in the mid 1990s he drew on the abstract paintings of a Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky or Kazimir Malevich, who ignited his fantasy and inspired his compositions. Kokon is the term Doerthe Fuchs uses to define a group of pieces of jewellery which are complete in themselves yet surprisingly draw the viewer''s eye inwards. Exquisitely subtle and delicate, they nonetheless achieve holistic stability. The "cocoon" form is constantly present and recognisable. With her project Kokon Doerthe Fuchs succeeds in uniting opposite extremes. The outcome is amazement. Even the materials she uses effortlessly overcome all sources of potential friction: coarse stone is linked with fine configurations of silver; mundane objects are veiled in the elegance of gold. This seeming incongruence is not unattractive, however; on the contrary, it is the linking factor of the "cocoon". It encloses what otherwise would not belong together to create a new unity. 2018 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first international symposium of silver jewellery Jablonec ''68. Thanks to the liberalisation endeavours as part of the ''Prague Spring'', European jewellery artists from East and West came together for a ''summit'' at the invitation of the Czech artists'' association in Jablonec, northern Bohemia. On the guest list were such renowned names as Anton Cepka, Hermann Junger and Bruno Martinazzi - artists celebrated today as the founders of studio jewellery. The jewellery pieces that developed at that time have remained in the Muzeum skla a bizuterie in Jablonec nad Nisou and to this day have lost nothing of their exceptional and pioneering aura. This publication - which contains a reprint of the original catalogue from 1968 - makes these pieces accessible to a wider audience for the very first time. A document that in a wholly authentic way allows the reader to experience this unique historical moment in the history of the international studio jewellery scene. Text in English and German. Michael Glancy is widely recognised as a prominent innovator in the field of studio glass. After studying with the critically acclaimed glass artist Dale Chihuly, he found his own artistic personality by combining different techniques: Glancy works with cold glass, which he sculpts through sandblasting and acid-cutting, and then coats with electroformed copper, silver or gold. Elegant and exceptional in their quality and beauty, Michael Glancy''s sculptures reveal the artist''s pursuit for perfection; fascinated by microscopic landscapes, Glancy translates cellular structures and geological stratifications into impressive sculptural objects. The lattice patterns etched into the glass suggest latitude and longitude, while the organic and undulating vessels allude to topography. Glancy''s own very specific mode of presentation - that of a base of sheet glass which shadows or connects to the standing vessel - has become his signature style. It is as if the two-dimensional world of the sheet of glass has developed and warped itself into a three-dimensional object. This transformation together with his scientific interests, positions his work between alchemy - at the intersection of physics and metaphysics - and conceptual art. Michael Glancy''s work is represented in numerous international museums and collections. Since 1982 he has taught and worked at the Rhode Island School of Design.
