Between Two Evils - Eva Dolan - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

LONGLISTED FOR THE THEAKSTON OLD PECULIER CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR AWARD 2021 ''Anyone wanting smart and compelling crime fiction with razor-sharp social comment should read Eva Dolan. In fact, EVERYONE should read her.'' Mark Billingham ''A new read from Eva Dolan is always a pleasure and her latest is as dark and gritty as ever … Dolan puts troubling contemporary themes at the heart of her fiction, creating a compelling mystery about the treatment of vulnerable immigrants in a secretive establishment'' Sunday Times As the country bakes under the relentless summer sun, a young doctor is found brutally murdered at his home in a picturesque Cambridgeshire village. Is his death connected to his private life – or his professional one? Dr Joshua Ainsworth worked at an all-female detention centre, one still recovering from a major scandal a few years before. Was he the whistle-blower – or an instigator? As Detective Sergeant Ferreira and Detective Inspector Zigic begin to painstakingly reconstruct Dr Ainsworth’s last days, they uncover yet more secrets and more suspects. But this isn’t the only case that’s demanding their attention – a violent criminal has been released on a technicality and the police force know he will strike again: the only question is who will be his first victim… SHORTLISTED FOR THE CRIME WRITING ASSOCIATION IAN FLEMING STEEL DAGGER 2020 Praise for Eva Dolan: ''Yet again, Eva Dolan has produced a compelling and often dramatic whodunit that tells you more about the state of the nation than a sheaf of newspapers'' Sunday Express ''Smartly plotted and intriguing'' Sunday Mirror ''Dolan depicts the breakthroughs and drawbacks of an investigation, the feint and parry of interviews, in engrossing detail and with great skill'' The Times ''A real state of the nation novel'' Barry Forshaw, Financial Times ''Dolan infuses old-fashioned police work with contemporary issues to paint a disturbing picture of our times'' Daily Mail ''Gripping from the first page, this is crime fiction with heart, a social conscience and an ending that packs a powerful emotional punch. I was a fan before. Now I’m in awe'' Paul Burston ''Dolan is expert at the orchestration of tension'' Guardian ''Eva is a brilliant storyteller and the stories she tells are as compelling as they are important'' Will Dean

One Half Truth - Eva Dolan - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

One Half Truth - Eva Dolan - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

''EVERYONE should read Eva Dolan'' Mark Billingham When the police are called to the report of a late-night shooting, they expect it to be drugs or gang-related. They don’t expect to find a young student executed on his way home. Jordan Radley was an aspiring journalist: hard working, well-liked, dedicated. His first major story – looking at the fallout following the closure of a major local factory – had run recently and looked to be the first step in his longed-for career. Even after the story ran, Jordan continued to stay in contact with those he interviewed: he was on his way back from their social club the night he was murdered. But as the detectives quickly discover, not only was Jordan killed, but those responsible also broke into his house, taking his laptop and notes. What was he researching that might have led to his death? And can this really be linked to another case – long ruled an accident – in the same area? Or are the police being forced to prioritise those with the best connections rather than the ones that most need their help? From the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award nominated author, Eva Dolan, this novel is perfect for fans of Susie Steiner, Sarah Hilary and Jane Casey. __________________________________________ Praise for Eva Dolan: ''Dolan is expert at the orchestration of tension'' Guardian ‘Elegantly crafted, humane and thought-provoking. She’s top drawer’ Ian Rankin on This is How it Ends ''A master of pace... [Dolan writes] richly imagined, cleverly plotted and socially aware stories'' Independent ''Dolan infuses old-fashioned police work with contemporary issues to paint a disturbing picture of our times'' Daily Mail

Malevich and Interwar Modernism - Eva Forgacs - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This book examines the legacy of international interwar modernism as a case of cultural transfer through the travels of a central motif: the square. The square was the most emblematic and widely known form/motif of the international avant-garde in the interwar years. It originated from the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich who painted The Black Square on White Ground in 1915 and was then picked up by another Russian artist El Lissitzky and the Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg. It came to be understood as a symbol of a new internationalism and modernity and while Forgács uses it as part of her overall narrative, she focuses on it and its journey across borders to follow its significance, how it was used by the above key artists and how its meaning became modified in Western Europe. It is unusual to discuss interwar modernism and its postwar survival, but this book’s chapters work together to argue that the interwar developments signified a turning point in twentieth-century art that led to much creativity and innovation. Forgács supports her theory with newly found and newly interpreted documents that prove how this exciting legacy was shaped by three major agents: Malevich, Lissitzsky and van Doesburg. She offers a wider interpretation of modernism that examines its postwar significance, reception and history up until the emergence of the New Left in 1956 and the seismic events of 1968.

Digital Work Platforms at the Interface of Labour Law - Eva Kocher - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This open access book shows how to design labour rights to effectively protect digital platform workers, organise accountability on digital work platforms, and guarantee workers’ collective representation and action. It acknowledges that digital work platforms entail enormous risks for workers, and at the same time it reveals the extent to which labour law is in need of reconstruction. The book focusses on the conceptual links – often overlooked in the past – between labour law’s categories and its regulatory approaches. By explaining and analysing the wealth of approaches that deconstruct and reconceptualise labour law, the book uncovers the organisational ideas that permeate labour law’s categories as well as its policy approaches in a variety of jurisdictions. These ideas reveal a lack of fit between labour law’s traditional concepts and digital platform work: digital work platforms rarely behave like hierarchical organisations; instead, they more often function as market organisers. The book provides a fresh perspective for international academic and policy debates on the regulation of digital work platforms, as well as on the purposes and foundations of labour law. It offers a way out of the impasse the debate around labour law classification has reached, by showing what labour law could learn from digital law approaches to platforms – and vice versa. Coloniality and the Governance of Education in West Africa - Dr Eva Bulgrin - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Coloniality and the Governance of Education in West Africa - Dr Eva Bulgrin - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This book explores the agenda-setting and mediation of the education decentralisation policy in Benin as a postcolonial, francophone context in West Africa. As such, it throws into sharp relief how far education decentralisation, as a global governance reform, informs policy and practice. The research draws on qualitative data with more than 80 research participants, including semi-structured interviews with high and middle-ranking officials from the Education, Decentralisation and Planning Ministries as well head teachers, teachers, parents and members of teacher unions in Benin. Bulgrin shows how decentralisation remains core tool of international organisations for promoting democracy, good governance and economic development, and how its advocates view it as a requirement for achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. The book draws on decolonial and postcolonial theories and concepts raised by Afican scholars'', such as Adesina, Mbembe and Mkandwire as well as Ball’s policy development framework and critical discourse analysis. It contributes to wider debates on education policy, governance, and decentralisation across the Global South. The book includes a preface by Abdel Rahman Baba-Moussa, General Secretary of the Conference of Ministers of Education of French-speaking States and Governments, and an epilogue by Yusuf Sayed, Professor of Education at the University of Cambridge, UK.

Greek Tragedies for Contemporary Times - Sophie Ellerby - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Three electrifying, fresh takes on Greek classics, adapting their stories to the modern day to address contemporary issues. Protest, desire, free will; the central themes of Greek classics have never been more prescient. In this specially commissioned trio of plays, modern writers utilise these well-known plays and their timeless themes to speak to 21st century issues. Lysistrata by Sophie Ellerby. Between working a zillion part-time jobs and campaigning to save the NHS, sixth year medical student Lysistrata is struggling to stay afloat. When a viral social media thread calls for all medical students to strike, she knows the perfect place to stage her protest – the local STI clinic. The Bacchae by Katherine Soper. When a group of young women discover the mysterious and charming Bacchus, they instantly form an unshakeable devotion to him and each other – it has awakened something inside of them that cannot be contained. The Trojan Women by Dipo Baruwa-Etti. The country is in a terrible financial state and the cost of living destroying lives. At a foodbank, a local councillor works with and helps others, mostly single mothers, though even the volunteers are struggling – not just monetarily, but in their spirits, wondering how much power they have and if they have control over their destinies. These plays were first commissioned by the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre for the SPRINGBOARD programme - a course that finds, inspires, and champions the next generation of performers from underrepresented backgrounds - this trio of plays offers not only imaginative and thought-provoking takes on Greek classics, but fantastic performance opportunities for students and actors.
