Linguistics and Oral History - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Linguistics and Oral History - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This edited volume brings together linguistic and oral history practitioners to explore the synergies between both disciplines. Contributors from Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, the UK, and the United States each take a different perspective on the relationship between oral history and language. Though linguists have been using oral history texts for some time and oral historians have a long tradition of describing language, there has hitherto been an absence of a single volume that brings together practitioners from both fields to explore the intersection between both areas. This book is comprised of contributions from linguists (corpus linguists, sociolinguists, dialectologists and second language acquisition experts) to present how they investigate oral history texts from a linguistic perspective as well as contributions from oral history practitioners who tend to focus on language-related aspects of their subject. In presenting perspectives from both disciplines, this book implicitly exposes the reader to synergies that exist between oral history and linguistics including methodological parallels in constructing and analysing written transcriptions of spoken events, analytical approaches to determining salient themes and linguistic items, relevant theoretical perspectives that frame discourse practices in oral histories and the practical considerations which researchers face when investigating large sets of spoken data. In essence, this book shows that oral historians and linguists are often doing the same things in different ways and makes the case for more collaboration between the disciplines to promote exchange of ideas, efficiency of practice and reciprocal development.

This book brings together testimonials from people of different nationalities and professions who are ''pro-Palestinian'', whether as scholars, film-makers, artists, musicians, activists, or NGO workers. Using what oral historians call the ‘focused life history’, renowned scholar, Rosemary Sayigh, invites her contributors to describe the experiences, events, motives and feelings that led them to support the Palestinian cause. The book is the first of its kind in Palestiniography and includes voices from countries across the world. A chapter is dedicated to each country and contributors are asked to reveal how they ‘discovered’ Palestine - given that Palestine is rarely mentioned in school textbooks or university courses - whether by travel, friendship, study, membership in a political party or book group. They are also asked to detail what specific forms their engagement has taken - ranging scholarly, creative, militant, or charitable - and what their hopes are for the international solidarity movement. Finally, each contributor reflects on if they feel a just and equitable solution can ever be achieved for Palestinians, and if they accept the label ‘pro-Palestinian’ or would rather define their relationship to the Palestinians in some other way. With testimonies from both high profile and grassroots activists, the book is a rich and personal selection that reflects the diversity, dynamism and global nature of the movement for Palestine.

A fully illustrated study into the extraordinary Convair B-36 during the Cold War. Conceived during 1941 in case Germany occupied Britain, when US bombers would then have insufficient range to retaliate, the B-36 was to be primarily a "10,000-mile bomber" with heavy defensive armament, six engines, and a performance that would prevent interception by fighters. Although rapid developments in jet engine and high-speed airframe technology quickly made it obsolescent, the B-36 took part in many important nuclear test programs. The aircraft also provided the US nuclear deterrent until the faster B-52 became available in 1955. It was one of the first aircraft to use substantial amounts of magnesium in its structure, leading to the bomber''s "Magnesium Overcast" nickname. It earned many superlatives due to the size and complexity of its structure, which used 27 miles of wiring, had a wingspan longer than the Wright brothers'' first flight, equivalent engine power to 400 cars, the same internal capacity as three five-room houses and 27,000 gallons of internal fuel – enough to propel a car around the world 18 times. Much was made of the fact that the wing was deep enough to allow engineers to enter it and maintain the engines in flight. B-36s continued in the bomber and reconnaissance role until their retirement in February 1959 following 11 years in SAC. Convair employees were invited to suggest names for the giant aircraft, eliciting suggestions such as "King Kong Bomber", "Condor", "Texan", and "Unbelievable", but the most popular was "Peacemaker". Oddly, objections from religious groups deterred the USAF from ever adopting it officially. This fully illustrated volume includes first-hand accounts, original photographs, and up to 30 profile artworks depicting in detail the complexity of this superlative aircraft.

B-25 Mitchell vs Japanese Destroyer - Mark Lardas - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

B-25 Mitchell vs Japanese Destroyer - Mark Lardas - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The Battle of the Bismarck Sea was one of the most decisive naval battles of World War II and this highly illustrated study details the three-day fight which shaped the outcome of the war. Throughout the first year of the war in the Pacific during World War II the USAAF was relatively ineffective against ships. Indeed, warships in particular proved to be too elusive for conventional medium-level bombing. High-level attacks wasted bombs, and torpedo attacks required extensive training. But as 1942 closed, the Fifth Air Force developed new weapons and new tactics that were not just effective, they were deadly. A maintenance officer assigned to a B-25 unit found a way to fill the bombardier''s position with four 0.50-cal machine guns and strap an additional four 0.50s to the sides of the bomber, firing forward. Additionally, skip-bombing was developed. This called for mast-top height approaches flying the length of the target ship. If the bombs missed the target, they exploded in the water close enough to crush the sides. The technique worked perfectly when paired with “strafe” B-25s.Over the first two months of 1943, squadrons perfected these tactics. Then, in early March, Japan tried to reinforce their garrison in Lae, New Guinea, with a 16-ship convoy – eight transports guarded by eight destroyers. The Fifth Air Force pounced on the convoy in the Bismarck Sea. By March 5 all eight transports and four destroyers had been sunk. This volume examines the mechanics of skip-bombing combined with a strafing B-25, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the combatants (B-25 versus destroyer), and revealing the results of the attacks and the reasons why these USAAF tactics were so successful.
