Deleuze: A Guide for the Perplexed - Claire Colebrook - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Deleuze: A Guide for the Perplexed - Claire Colebrook - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Continuum''s Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to fathom, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material. Gilles Deleuze is undoubtedly one of the seminal figures in modern Continental thought. However, his philosophy makes considerable demands on the student; his major works make for challenging reading and require engagement with some difficult concepts and complex systems of thought. Deleuze: A Guide for the Perplexed is the ideal text for anyone who needs to get to grips with Deleuzian thought, offering a thorough, yet approachable account of the central themes in his work: sense; univocity; intuition; singularity; difference. His ideas related to language, politics, ethics and consciousness are explored in detail and - most importantly - clarified. The book also locates Deleuze in the context of his philosophical influences and antecedents and highlights the implications of his ideas for a range of disciplines from politics to film theory. Throughout, close attention is paid to Deleuze''s most influential publications, including the landmark texts The Logic of Sense and Difference and Repetition.

The Welfare of Future Children - Dr Rebecca Bennett - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The Welfare of Future Children - Dr Rebecca Bennett - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This open access practical guide to reproductive ethics navigates the complex subject of the policy around IVF treatment and disability screening based on the concerns around the welfare of future children. It focuses on 3 questions in order to examine these often complex philosophical issues:· Should we allow prospective parents using IVF to implant an embryo with a condition considered to be a disability?· Is routine screening for Down syndrome in pregnancy ethically acceptable, even if there is evidence that individuals may feel pressure to accept this screening?· Are we justified in attempting to evaluate the potential parenting ability of those trying to access fertility treatment (e.g. disabled people or individuals with past criminal convictions) and prevent access in some cases?Rebecca Bennett walks the reader through different answers to these questions, exploring issues such as whether it is ever morally wrong to reproduce, whether we have a moral obligation to try and bring the ‘best’ children we can into existence and how we can assess the quality of future lives. There is, of course, no consensus about what the ‘right’ answers are to these questions, however answers are needed. This area of policy and regulation is one that, Bennett argues, is heavily influenced by intuition, social norms and bias. The Welfare of Future Children invites us to question these norms and to come to a position on these issues that emphasises reason, transparency and accountability. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the University of Manchester, UK.

Bargainin' for Salvation - Steven Heine - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Bargainin' for Salvation - Steven Heine - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

A thoughtful examination of Dylan''s oeuvre through the lens of Buddhism One of the mysteries of Bob Dylan''s incredible corpus is why he seems to veer and zigzag so drastically and dramatically from one extreme standpoint to another. Throughout his career, rapid, radical transitions in musical style and public persona have either inspired or shocked different sectors of his fans. Is Dylan''s work complex and contradictory, or is there an underlying consistency and continuity to its seemingly chaotic ebb and flow? Steven Heine argues that Dylan actually embraces two radically distinct worldviews at alternating periods. One is prevalent in his Protest (early ''60s), Country (late ''60s), and Gospel (late ''70s) phases; it finds Dylan expressing moral outrage by endorsing a single higher truth based on a right-versus-wrong philosophy. The second view appears during periods of Dylan''s disillusionment in the mid ''60s ("Desolation Row"), mid ''70s ("Tangled Up in Blue"), and mid ''80s ("Jokerman"), finding him disenchanted with one-sided proclamations of truth, and wandering, seemingly aimless, amid a relativistic world of masks and disguises where nothing is ever what it claims to be. Throughout his various stages, Dylan''s work reveals an affinity with the Zen worldview, where enlightenment can be attained through meditation, self-contemplation and intuition rather than through faith and devotion. Much has been made of Dylan''s Christian periods, but never before has a book engaged Dylan''s deep and rich oeuvre through a Buddhist lens. Forgoing Christianity and Western views for Zen and Buddhism, Bargainin'' for Salvation will capture your attention and direct it toward the East.
