Old Testament Narratives and Speech Act Theory explores the creative power of words in Old Testament narratives. While the most famous example of this phenomenon might involve divine utterances such as, “Let there be light” (Gen. 1:1), Steven T. Mann argues that human characters can also create worlds with their words in an attempt to influence the imaginations, and therefore actions, of their listeners. This study focuses on the performative nature of speeches that are found in several key Old Testament narratives, including Genesis 4:1-26; 18:16-33, Exodus 1:8-22; 32:1-14, Numbers 13–14, 2 Samuel 7:1-17, Amos 7:1-6, and Jonah 2:1-10; 4:2-3. The author organizes the study by identifying two basic levels of analysis: the story level (viewing the impact of narrative speeches within the world of the story) and the storyteller level (considering possible ways in which these narrative worlds might impact the world of the audience). Within these narratives, characters use their words to create competing worlds that clash as they attempt to advance their own agendas. The storyteller’s portrayal of these narrative worlds invites the audience to incorporate viewpoints of certain characters into their own world.

Concepts seem to work best when created in the interspace between theory and praxis, and between philosophy, art, and science. Deleuze himself had generated many concepts in this encounter between philosophy and non-philosophy, including his ideas of affects and percepts, of becoming, the stutter, the rhizome, movement-image and time-image, the rhizome. What happens, if instead of "other disciplines," we take other cultures, other languages, other philosophies? Does not the focus on English as a hegemonic language of academic discourse deny us a plethora of possibilities, of possible Denkfiguren, of possible concepts? Each contributor explores ideas that are key to thinking in their language – about sound and silence, voice and image, living and thinking, the self and the world - while simultaneously addressing the issue of translation. Each chapter demonstrates that translation itself is a way of invention, rather than just a rendering of concepts from one system in terms of another. This collection acts as a travelogue. The journey does not follow a particular trajectory—some countries are not on the map; some are visited twice. So, there is no claim to completeness involved here—it is rather an invitation to answer to the call.

On September 26, 1953, the Eisenhower administration signed three executive agreements with General Franco’s regime, which allowed the United States to install military bases in Spain in exchange for economic and military aid. The deal clearly favored US Cold War interests, and critics soon denounced that by signing the Pact of Madrid America had betrayed its own democratic credentials. The agreements stabilized the dictatorship and effectively converted it into a US satellite.During the transition to democracy after 1975, the US military presence in Spain was strongly debated. Many politicians and a large section of the Spanish public demanded a new foreign policy and a much higher degree of autonomy for Spain in the international system. However, as this book unravels, the UCD center governments of the late 1970s and early 1980s essentially gave up on their long-held claim to a new and more balanced relationship with Washington. This fact was carefully concealed from the public. Thus, it was only well into the mid-1980s, when the new socialist government gradually developed a more consistent foreign policy doctrine, that Washington fully realized that the bilateral relations had to be approached in an entirely different manner.For all these reasons, the present work is also a statement in the ongoing scholarly debate on the Spanish transition to democracy and the importance of foreign influences on this process. Finally, the book sheds new light on the role of King Juan Carlos in foreign affairs, just as it discusses Spain’s alleged role in the Iran-Contra Affair.
