Klaviersonate Nr. 6 F-dur Opus 10 Nr. 2 : Piano Sonata no. 6 in F major op. 10 no. 2

After composing the three Piano Sonatas op. 2 between 1794/95, Beethoven presumably planned a further trilogy without delay. Because of its enormous scope, the Grande Sonata op. 7 was removed from this new project and published separately. But by the beginning of 1798, the next group of three, the Sonatas in C minor, F major, and D major, had already been completed and it was published in Vienna that year as opus 10. Like the Sonata in C minor, op. 10 no. 1, the Sonata in F major has only three movements, diverging from the four-movement model established in opuses 2 and 7 - the result of intensive experimentation with different variants of the minuet, all of which would ultimately be discarded. Beethoven’s autograph manuscripts for opus 10 no longer survive, leaving the team Perahia/Gertsch to turn primarily to the first edition. As always, our edition has an extensive commentary and proven fingerings by Murray Perahia.

Klaviertrio Opus 6

Since 2019, G. Henle Publishers has been the proud agent for Evgeny Kissin’s compositions, which have reached work number 6 with this Piano Trio composed in 2022. Following piano pieces, a violoncello sonata, a string quartet and vocal works with piano accompaniment, with this Trio Kissin presents us with his contribution to another important classical genre. The technically demanding three-movement composition was written against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. In dramatic, gripping musical language Kissin describes here the horrors of the battlefield, but also gives moving expression to the hope for an early peace. The trio, which he has already performed on numerous occasions with his musician friends, has thus became his most personal work to date.

Aside from the Piano Quartet op. 13 and the Violin Sonata op. 18, the Cello Sonata op. 6 numbers among the most mature works of chamber music from Strauss’ early œuvre. The influences of Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms are noticeable, while leaving sufficient space for a very personal tonal language, often with surprising rhythmic and harmonic turns of phrase. Strauss subjected the first version completed in early 1881 to a radical revision over the winter of 1882/83; the opening movement was thoroughly reworked, the two subsequent movements rewritten completely. It was worth it, because after the premiere in Dresden, the composer wrote to his mother, “My sonata garnered extraordinary acclaim, the applause was enormous, congratulations came to me from all sides.”

This complete edition of Beethoven's correspondence has been edited by Sieghard Brandenburg on commission from the Beethoven House in Bonn. It forms a milestone in the study of Beethoven, being the first complete edition in Germanto be compiled and fully annotated in accordance with modern scholarly-critical criteria. The edition includes all of Beethoven's known letters (1,789 items of primary correspondence), all obtainable letters written to him (370items of secondary correspondence) and numerous documents written on Beethoven's behalf by third parties (163 items of tertiary correspondence). It provides the text in a diplomatic transcription critically corroborated againstthe original sources, including deleted passages, addresses and drafts. The texts are presented in chronological order in six volumes and are made readily accessible by a seventh volume containing indices of names, places, works,senders, recipients, and text incipits as well as a list of sources and concordances to other editions of Beethoven's letters.

Decisive and manly,” most profound sentiment and delicacy,” and imaginative humour” – thus does Beethoven’s contemporary Carl Czerny accurately describe the three movements of this expressive sonata. As no autograph manuscript has survived, the first edition of the three sonatas op. 10, published in Vienna in 1798, forms the sole basis for the revised Urtext edition of the Sonata in c minor. Yet another jewel stemming from the collaboration between Beethoven specialist Norbert Gertsch and star pianist Murray Perahia.

In the years 2001-2014, G. Henle Publishers issued Urtext editions of the ten piano sonatas by Alexander Scriabin. The Scriabin specialist Valentina Rubcova from Moscow, the editor of these ten editions, studied all of theavailable sources for each work. In many cases, Henle's were the first-ever Urtext editions, offering these highly complex musical texts in an immaculate, uncluttered, newly engraved format that was truly a landmark event! It was by a roundabout route that the autograph score of Haydn’s most important piano work ended up in the New York Library via a collector. Its four leaves contain a fair copy of the work- two leaves with a sketch-like character follow. Haydn composed the work, at the time still entitled “Sonate”, for “Signora de Ployer” (probably the pianist Barbara Ployer associated with Mozart). The variation movement was apparently intended as the beginning of a sonata with several movements. As can be seen from the second part of the autograph score, Haydn later extended the movement and ended it with an expansive Capriccio Coda. The first print already bears the title “Variations”. Themoving masterpiece has been played all over the world under the title “Variations in f minor” ever since.
