Women With Intellectual Disabilities - Kelley Johnson - Bog - Jessica Kingsley Publishers - Plusbog.dk

''I recommend this book to anyone engaged in working collaboratively with people with the label ''learning difficulty'', particularly in women''s; groups, self advocacy or rights bases/citizenship concerns. The plain English accounts are accessible, but I also found the main bulk of the text easily translatable and used it extensively in my recent research. For the women involved in this project it provided a framework of reference in which they recognized similar life events and experiences. Not only does this book fill this gap by providing a frame in which women can examine this exclusion, it also questions the marginalized position of women classified as having ''learning difficulties'' in feminist and disability literature.''- Disability and Society''This is such a good read that it is difficult to be objective about the content, criticism was suspended! It is divided into parts and each part is helpfully introduced by the editors. There is also a short straightforward description of the content at the beginning of each chapter so that women with intellectual disabilities can be included in the readership. This book gives us a valuable insight into the lives of women with learning disabilities. It changes an often discriminated group into individuals of considerable interest and value. It is to be recommended to everyone who feels that difference is important in our community.''- Ann Craft Trust BulletinThis book provides the first comprehensive exploration of the issues affecting the lives of women with intellectual disabilities. Women from all over the world, with and without intellectual disabilities, have collaborated to write about their lives, their experiences and their hopes for the future. Different aspects of life - work, family, relationships and community involvement - are discussed. Some of the women have found, or are finding, fulfilling, happy, creative lifestyles. One message which emerging from many of their stories is that their intellectual disability is less of a problem than the social and economic discrimination these women experience. This book thus raises important questions about society''s attitudes to women with intellectual disabilities. It is also a place where these women''s stories - from the sad or disturbing to the happy, moving or inspirational - can be heard. The book''s unique plain English versions of chapters will ensure that it is accessible to other women with intellectual disabilities. It is an important, interesting and readable addition to literature about intellectual disabilities and about women''s lives across the world.

Supporting Women after Domestic Violence - Hilary Abrahams - Bog - Jessica Kingsley Publishers - Plusbog.dk

This is really interesting and compelling book. Abrahams'' writing style is readable and engaging and is interspersed with reference to research and powerfully, the words of women who have experienced domestic violence. Right from the beginning of this book, there are passages that challenge stereotypes and tackle stereotypical thinking regarding women who experience domestic violence... Very engaging, Really useful. Powerful and authoritative, I''d recommend this book to anyone working with women, whether in the community or the workplace. I have worked with a variety of groups (children, families, people with mental health problems, older people) and domestic violence has been a factor in working in all these areas of work. This text will certainly be useful to me and no doubt to many others addressing issues of domestic violence.''- Well-Being''Abrahams gives us a sense of how lives are shattered and rebuilt in this compelling book that is the culmination of a research project exploring the experiences of women and children in three refuges in the UK... It is a key resource for those working within women''s refuges, as well as for professionals whose work brings them into contact with victims of domestic violence. Those tasked with developing and implementing public policy would also find it enlightening.''- Therapy Today''Compelling reading for anyone working with women and children living with and leaving domestic violence.''- From the Foreword by Cathy HumphreysWomen who leave an abusive relationship often experience feelings of fear, bewilderment, anger and confusion. The trauma caused by domestic violence leaves a legacy that stays with the survivor, and it is not uncommon for women to experience feelings of loss and grief similar to those following bereavement, but made more complex by the effect that abuse has had on their emotional health and well-being.Supporting Women after Domestic Violence offers accessible advice on how to enable women who have experienced domestic violence to embark on a journey of recovery. The book draws on theory, original research and the personal experiences of women who have encountered domestic violence to explore the complex practical and emotional support they need when engaging in the process of recovery. It highlights the difficulties a victim of domestic violence may encounter following an abusive relationship, offers action points to improve service provision, and covers important issues in recovery, such as the value of mutual support and how women can regain a sense of normality and self-esteem.This book will be a key resource for those working within women''s refuges, as well as social workers, counsellors, mental health professionals and many others whose work may bring them into situations where domestic violence is an issue.

Sexuality and Women with Learning Disabilities - Michelle Mccarthy - Bog - Jessica Kingsley Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Sexuality and Women with Learning Disabilities - Michelle Mccarthy - Bog - Jessica Kingsley Publishers - Plusbog.dk

''Sexuality and Women with Learning Disabilities makes a significant contribution to both feminist and disability literature, because it challenges common assumptions about the sexuality of people with learning disabilities, forces a reconsideration of how this group of people are viewed by those around them and links gender and disability in its analysis.''-Tizard Learning Disability Review''By tackling issues that have received little meaningful attention, McCarthy both makes a valuable contribution to the literature and provides a useful practical guide to those wishing to support their clients more effectively.''- Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Care''The thoroughness and attention to detail with which McCarthy has investigated and written about the sexual lives of a small number of women with mild to moderate learning difficulties is to be commended. Drawing upon interviews with the women who participated in this study, there is explicit detail about the reality of their sexual lives that overall comes across as sad, poignant and often shocking, with a high level of sexual abuse revealed... however, McCarthy has a strong code of ethics and sensitivity and a reflexive honesty about her role and stance as a feminist researcher that removes any possibility or suggestion of prurient voyeurism or exploitation being a part of this research. McCarthy writes as a woman with and about women, allowing their voices about their sexual experiences to be heard through the medium of in-depth interviews. Within the book, the sexual experiences of women with learning disabilities are set in a wider policy and practice framework and discussed in relation to ideologies surrounding learning disability, gender and sexuality in a cultural context. The book ends with a chapter discussing and listing policy and practice recommendations, including suggestions about changes to the law... Overall, this was a convincing and compelling book that deserves serious attention and I would strongly recommend it to anyone with an interest in learning disability issues, including practitioners, carers, relatives, advocates and counsellors.''- CSPRD NewsletterIn this study of women with mild and moderate learning disabilities, Michelle McCarthy investigates how these women experience their sexual lives, basing her research on interviews with the women themselves. She argues the importance of informing the work of those responsible at research, practice and policy levels with the voices of people with learning disabilities. In the interviews, women talk openly about what form their sexual activity takes and what it means for them, the circumstances in which it occurs, and the pleasures (or lack thereof) associated with it. These interviews directly shape the policy and practice recommendations the author makes.Michelle McCarthy''s findings suggest that women with learning disabilities commonly find themselves engaged in sexual activity which is not to their liking and not of their choosing. A high level of sexual abuse was also reported. The author discusses this in relation to the cultural forces which have influenced Western perceptions of sexuality, feminism and theories and prejudices about learning disabilities. She also studied the impact of institutional and community settings on the sexuality of women with learning disabilities. In Sexuality and Women with Learning Disabilities, McCarthy makes recommendations for policy and practice which will protect this vulnerable group, and advises on education, support and seeking justice for abused women.

Working Therapeutically with Women in Secure Mental Health Settings - - Bog - Jessica Kingsley Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Working Therapeutically with Women in Secure Mental Health Settings - - Bog - Jessica Kingsley Publishers - Plusbog.dk

`This book is an invaluable resource for all healthcare professionals working with women in secure services. It offers an insight into the needs of an often reviled but vulnerable client group.''-Journal of Advanced Nursing`The Editors have successfully maintained a readable and thought-provoking style in a multi-author text and the book can be recommended to all mental health professionals in this field''.-The Mental Health Review, Vol 10 Issue 3`This publication is aimed at practitioners who work with women in secure settings. There is relatively little material available which integrates practice, research and service development issues in this challenging area, and this publication fills an important gap. The first section explores and explains the theoretical issues which should underpin relevant policies and practices by the different practitioners operating in this, somewhat neglected, field. The section covers matters such a gender and forensic mental health, the vulnerability of women in prison, and women''s pathways into and through secure mental health services. The second focuses on practice issues including challenges for forensic mental health nurses; experiences of women patients, and lessons for practice from a women''s group in a medium secure setting. The final section explores key themes for service development. This is a thought-provoking and authoritative resource.'' - Care and Health Magazine`This is an honest and open review of the challenges faced by staff working with women in secure mental health settings, and current research, thinking and developments in service provision. It''s contributors provide a rich multi-disciplinary perspective, in welcome contrast to the medical model that more usually drives high and medium secure units…Contributors question current practice in, for example, the management of aggression and the use of response teams, discussing these interventions from the viewpoints of service users and suggesting more positive alternative approaches…well-written and intense insight into working with this challenging client group.'' -Mental Health TodayA pressing need for the integration of current practice, research and service development is addressed in this comprehensive book, which explores the experience of work with women in secure mental health settings. The first section offers different perspectives on the needs and situations of this minority population. It includes consideration of the differing needs of women and men, and key environmental and therapeutic issues highlighted by recent research and service provision. Further chapters cover clinical illustrations of work with women in different settings, including descriptions of integrated multi-disciplinary practice, discussion of the experience of female patients and staff on a mixed sex ward, and exploration of therapeutic groupwork. The final section offers practice guidelines and frameworks for both individual staff and professional teams. At a time when the government''s national agenda for mental health has focused on specialist secure provision for women, this book is essential reading for all those working in this challenging area.
