In Poetic Modernism in the Culture of Mass Print , Bartholomew Brinkman argues that an emerging mass print culture conditioned the production, reception, and institutionalization of poetic modernism from the latter part of the nineteenth century through the middle of the twentieth century—with lasting implications for the poetry and media landscape. Drawing upon extensive archival research in the United States and Britain, Brinkman demonstrates that a variety of print collecting practices—including the anthology, the periodical, the collage poem, volumes of selected and collected poems, and the modern poetry archive—helped structure key formal and institutional sites of poetic modernism. Brinkman focuses on the generative role of book collecting practices and the negotiation of print ephemera in scrapbooks. He also traces the evolution of the modern poetry archive as a particular case of the mid-twentieth-century rise of literary archives and identifies parallels between the beginning of mass print culture at the end of the nineteenth century and the growth of digital culture today. Advocating for a transatlantic modernism that stretches roughly from 1880 to 1960—one that incorporates both popular and canonical poets—Brinkman successfully extends the geographical, historical, and vertical dimensions of modernist studies. Rather than embracing the press, scientific authors often disliked and distrusted it. In many cases, they sought to avoid putting their work into print altogether. In Loath to Print, Nicole Howard takes a fresh look at early modern printing technology from the perspective of the natural philosophers and physicians who relied on it to share ideas. She offers a new perspective on scientific publishing in the early modern period, one that turns the celebration of print on its head. Understanding the relationship between the Black press and Black women's political and community organizing helps illuminate how important Black women were to this media phenomenon in its first one hundred years. In the nineteenth century, Zackodnik reveals, the Black press was second only to the Black church in its centrality to Black politics and communities, but histories of its development have long credited its founding and development to the Black men who were its editors. Despite their underrepresentation in the leadership of Black public politics and the Black press, women were overrepresented in the mutual benevolent, moral improvement, and literary societies that functioned as community centers of political, oratorical, and print culture work. These societies supplied the Black press with content, a readership, and distribution nodes in Black communities throughout the nation. Zackodnik examines the vital opportunity that this networking of the Black press with literary societies offered Black women readers to enter Black print space and advance communal goals. She also explores how Black women gained a foothold within publications—often, initially, with "gateway genres" such as letters to the editor and women's columns—and shaped the Black press. This book will change how we understand the early Black press and overlooked Black feminist print practices.
