The Conservative Party and the Nation - Arthur Aughey - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Conservative Party and the Nation - Arthur Aughey - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

This book re-examines the claim that the Conservative Party is the national party and that its politics express the enduring national interest. Historically one could argue for the existence of a coherent Conservative nation, but recently the identification of the party with the nation has diminished. This is because the idea of the nation has become contested in British politics such that political expectations based on the apparent certainties of the past have become disordered. The Conservative Party and the nation explores these ideological shifts in three related areas. The first concerns the historical character of the Conservative Party, in particular the significance of the nation in its self-understanding and the manner in which its traditional political commitments continue to shape the patterns of contemporary Conservatism. The second addresses the political culture of the modern party, one which proclaims a Unionist vocation yet one which rests mainly on English support, and considers how the Englishness of the Conservative Party is reconciled with the high politics of British statecraft. The third reflects on the constitutional challenge which Conservatives face in managing a changing Union, in negotiating a changing Europe and in defining a changing national interest. This book is essential reading not only for students and scholars of the Conservative Party but also for those who want to make sense of the transformations taking place in modern British politics.

The Labour Party Under Ed Miliband - Eunice Goes - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

When Ed Miliband was elected leader of the Labour Party in 2010 he believed the global financial crisis had opened the way for a new social democratic moment. With great intellectual and ideological gusto, Miliband and his close-knit team of advisers devoted considerable time and energy to chart the road that would lead to the renewal of social democratic politics in Britain. Was Miliband successful at turning the page on New Labour and re-imagining social democracy for the post-global financial-crisis era? This book maps the ideas - old and new - that were debated and adopted by the Labour Party under Miliband, and shows how they were adapted to contemporary circumstances and transformed into policy proposals. However, the timing of Miliband''s leadership, his inability to find supporters for his agenda of transformative change, the prevalence of neoliberalism in public discourse and the crisis of European social democracy led to a watered down political agenda that lacked boldness, clarity and definition. For these reasons Goes argues that the Labour Party under Miliband tried but ultimately failed to renew social democracy. This failure is one of several reasons why ''Milibandism'' was so overwhelmingly rejected by voters at the 2015 general election. The Labour Party under Ed Miliband offers a thought-provoking perspective on how political parties develop their thinking and political blueprints. It will appeal to scholars and students of British politics and ideologies and to anyone interested in contemporary debates about social democracy.

Nostalgia and the Post-War Labour Party - Richard Jobson - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

Centre-Left Parties and the European Union - Isabelle Hertner - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

Centre-Left Parties and the European Union - Isabelle Hertner - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

This book investigates how the British Labour Party, the French Socialist Party (PS), and the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) deal with the European Union (EU). It contributes to our understanding of parties as democratic organisations. In particular, this book analyses who within the parties formulates EU policies and who selects EU specialists. This is a very timely topic, as the process of European integration places particular policy constraints on centre-left parties. They seek to reconcile market capitalism with social responsibility. However, the EU, in recent decades, has arguably done more to promote market capitalism and economic competitiveness than to enhance social responsibility and address increasing levels of social inequality. This is an in-depth study that draws on over sixty-five original interviews with EU specialists from the three parties and the Party of European Socialists and on an e-mail questionnaire sent to the party grassroots. It uses a principal-agent framework to study power delegation within the party. The book will be relevant to researchers with an interest in comparative party politics (with a focus on the center-left) in Britain, France, and Germany; party organisations; intra-party democracy; social democracy and the European Union; and the Party of European Socialists. The book is also suitable for students and could be used for modules in the areas of comparative politics, the EU and its member states, and Europeanisation. It is also likely to have broad appeal among party members and officials from the Labour Party, PS, SPD and PES as well as centre-left think tanks.

Rethinking Right-Wing Women - - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

Rethinking Right-Wing Women - - Bog - Manchester University Press - Plusbog.dk

Rethinking right-wing women explores the institutional structures for and the representations, mobilisation, and political careers of women in the British Conservative Party since the late-nineteenth century. Tory women have been effective and energetic party workers, and they have always been crucial for fund-raising, canvassing, electioneering work, and as voters at election time. The history of women in the British Conservative Party has not received the attention it deserves. Tory women have been under-researched for the paradoxical reason that they are off the radar for most male-centred party and political historians, and, due to their presumed anti-feminist views and complicity with the patriarchal establishment, they are not embraced by women’s and gender historians. Yet the Conservative Party has been highly successful with women at party level and within the electorate at large. This success helps to explain the party’s hegemony for much of the twentieth century, and now into the twenty first century. Starting in the 1880s, and with the establishment of the Primrose League, women were politicised before they had the vote. Women’s successful mobilisation for the party before they became citizens and, later, in the wake of women’s suffrage in 1918 and the equal suffrage in 1928, played an instrumental role in the Conservative party’s transformation and reinvention from elite to mass democratic party. Leading scholars in this field have come together with the Conservative Party archivist and Baroness Jenkin of Women2win to consider the accommodation some Conservative women made with the evolving women’s emancipation agenda, and the strategies they pursued to make the party more gender balanced. This book also emphasises the importance of studying women’s leadership and their engagement in non- or even in anti-feminist political projects, and open up new terrains of research and enquiry.
