Protein Water Interactions - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Protein Water Interactions - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book is aimed at understanding which molecular parameters control the thermodynamics, structure, and functions of the protein-water systems. Proteins are one of the most important classes of biological molecules. Water binding (hydration or biological water) plays a crucial role in determining the structure, stability, and functions of proteins. Knowledge of processes occurring upon hydration or dehydration of protein macromolecules is very important in biotechnological and pharmaceutical applications of proteins such as their use as biocatalysts, biosensors, and selective adsorbents. There are essential differences between hydration and bulk water surrounding a protein. This means that a characterisation of the hydration of protein macromolecules requires elucidating the effects of both the protein on water and vice versa. Therefore, a quantitative estimation of the protein and water contributions to the thermodynamic functions of binary protein-water systems is of considerable fundamental importance and practical interest. This book describes the basic principles of a novel methodology to investigate the protein-water interactions. This methodology is based on the analysis of the excess thermodynamic functions of mixing. The thermodynamic properties (volume V, enthalpy H, entropy S, heat capacity Cp, and Gibbs free energy G) of a real binary water-protein system can be expressed in terms of the excess functions. They are the difference between the thermodynamic function of mixing in a real system and the value corresponding to an ideal system at the same temperature, pressure and composition. For an ideal system, all excess functions are zero. Deviations of the excess functions from zero indicate the extent to which the studied binary system is non-ideal due to strong specific interactions between components (ie: hydrogen bonding and charge-charge interactions).

Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena in Spintronics - Herbert P. Simanjuntak - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena in Spintronics - Herbert P. Simanjuntak - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Although the discussion is general, this book focuses on the problem of macroscopic quantum phenomena using systems of spintronics. The spintronics considered are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spintronics. To represent the macroscopic quantum phenomena in spintronics, transitions from one state to another of the magnetization of ferromagnetic spintronics are considered, and of the NA (c)el vector of antiferromagnetic spintronics. The authors have studied transitions from a metastable state to a more stable one, as well as quantum coherence between two degenerate stable states. Quantum and classical rates of transitions are presented as functions of temperature, magnetic field and the spin-polarized current flowing through the spintronics. With this method, one can immediately observe the effect of the spin-polarized current on the transitions of the magnetization and the NA (c)el vector when comparing the results to those of the earlier ones on magnetic systems that did not have spin-polarized current. Specifically, while dissipations in magnetic system are intrinsic, the book shows how the total dissipation in spintronics can be controlled and eliminated by varying the spin-polarized current appropriately that depends on the temperature. The study of transitions from a metastable state to a more stable one in ferromagnetic spintronics shows that the rate of transitions of the magnetization at low temperatures is low and vanishes at zero temperature, so that the magnetization is relatively more stable than that in ferromagnetic materials without existence of spin-polarized currents. In the case of antiferromagnetic spintronics, the behavior and characteristics of transitions of the NA (c)el vector is in contrast to those of ferromagnetic spintronics, where the low-temperature rate of transitions in antiferromagnetic spintronics varies exponentially small in temperature, and is finite and non-vanishing at zero temperature. In addition to the theoretical aspects, the book also discusses experimental and technological aspects that one may obtain. Measurements of the rate of transitions can be used to provide an independent method to determine certain parameters being involved, such as the anisotropy parameter Kc of tetragonal crystals, which is an important parameter but usually difficult to obtain. Eliminating dissipation in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spintronics would be desired so as not to have unnecessary loss of energy. Low rate of transitions corresponds to the initial state that is relatively stable. Technologically, the stability of the states of the magnetization and NA (c)el vector in spintronics are important, for example, for memory storage.

Financial Crisis & the European Union - Klaus G Efenhoff - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Financial Crisis & the European Union - Klaus G Efenhoff - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The European Union (EU) is a treaty-based, institutional framework that defines and manages economic and political co-operation among its 27 member states (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom). The Union is the latest stage in a process of European integration begun after World War II to promote peace and economic prosperity in Europe. Its founders hoped that by creating communities of shared sovereignty, another war in Europe would be unthinkable. Since the 1950''s, this European integration project has expanded to encompass other economic sectors, a customs union, a single market in which goods, people, and capital move freely, a common agricultural policy, and a common currency (the Euro). The global financial crisis has hit the EU hard. The latest economic forecasts painted a bleak picture of close to zero growth and risks of contraction for the EU economy in 2009, with unemployment rising by some 2.7 million in the next two years, on the assumption that no corrective action is taken. Quick and decisive action is needed to stop this downward spiral. The interplay of national and EU action can help all Member States weather the worst of the global economic storms and emerge stronger from the crisis.

Convex Optimization - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Convex Optimization - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Over the past two decades, it has been recognized that advanced image processing techniques provide valuable information to physicians for the diagnosis, image guided therapy and surgery, and monitoring of human diseases. This book introduces novel and sophisticated mathematical problems which encourage the development of advanced optimisation and computing methods, especially convex optimisation. The authors go on to study Steffensen-King-type methods of convergence to approximate a locally unique solution of a nonlinear equation and also in problems of convex optimisation. Real-world applications are also provided. The following study is focused on the design and testing of a Matlab code of the Frank-Wolfe algorithm. The Nesterov step is proposed in order to accelerate the algorithm, and the results of some numerical experiments of constraint optimization are also provided. Lagrangian methods for numerical solutions to constrained convex programs are also explored. For enhanced algorithms, the traditional Lagrange multiplier update is modified to take a soft reflection across the zero boundary. This, coupled with a modified drift expression, is shown to yield improved performance. Next, Newtons mesh independence principle was used to solve a certain class of optimal design problems from earlier studies. Motivated by optimization considerations, the authors show that under the same computational cost, a finer mesh independence principle can be given than before. This compilation closes with a presentation on a local convergence analysis for eighthorder variants of HansenPatricks family for approximating a locally unique solution of a nonlinear equation. The radius of convergence and computable error bounds on the distances involved are also provided.

Understanding Mortgage Meltdowns - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Understanding Mortgage Meltdowns - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Borrowers who used alternative mortgages to finance homes during the housing boom have experienced rising foreclosure rates as housing markets have declined. Some types of alternative mortgages may have exacerbated price declines and damaged the finances of consumers and lenders. The use of mortgages with adjustable rates, zero down payment, interest-only, or negative amortisation features raise economic risk compared to traditional mortgages. Because some borrowers and lenders did not adequately evaluate these risks, housing finance markets have been hit with significant losses and financial markets have been in turmoil. Alternative mortgages offer some combination of adjustable rates, extremely low down payments, negative amortisation, and optional monthly payments. The prudent use of alternative mortgages offers benefits. For example, during periods of exceptionally high interest rates, adjustable rates may suit consumers expecting rates to fall. People whose incomes depend on commission or bonuses may be attracted to mortgages with flexible monthly payments. These benefits come with potential costs for the borrower and for the financial system. Adjustable rates shift the risk of rising interest rates from banks to borrowers. Low down payments increase the risk that borrowers will owe more than their house is worth if prices fall. A borrower owing more than the house is worth may be unable to sell or refinance the house. The use of alternative mortgages in these areas may have contributed to rising defaults and more volatile home prices. More than a trillion dollars of mortgages originated during the boom will reset their monthly payments by 2009.

Japanese Civilization in the 21st Century - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Japanese Civilization in the 21st Century - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book is a comprehensive synthesis of Japanese civilization in the 21st century. It covers all major elements of this civilization with a strong emphasis on how it can develop further in the future. All nations strive for prominence, but few reach it. Over the last 61 years (1965-2016), Japan has achieved this uncommon status. But, where is Japan heading in the 21st century? This question has been asked since the 1990s; Japan has been in a stagnant-deflation stage and has been looking for all sorts of solutions to return to the prosperous times reflecting Pax Niponnica in the 1970s and 1980s. The context of this situation and some recommendations for the future of Japanese culture are provided in this book. Nowadays, Japan is the third largest economy of the world, second only to China in the 2010s. Its economy performs at near zero growth, due primarily to its aging society, which is actually positive since the Japanese have the longest lifespan in the world today and slow growth does not unsustainably deplete resources and nature. Japans new purpose should be in the development of a sustainably wise civilisation and its world-wide dissemination. Does Japanese civilization have a chance to trigger another reform and be successful again in the 21st century? This question has been pondered by several co-authors of the book. This monograph is written for those who are interested in the contemporary issues of the worlds globalization and the role of leading countries in this process. With this in mind, students, faculty, social and political activists from around the world should be interested in this book.

The Caucasus and Iran - Khatuna Tabagari - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Caucasus and Iran - Khatuna Tabagari - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The consumption of oil and gas increases annually. In 2019 the share of oil was 33.1% and that of gas a 24.2% in the entire world energy consumption. During the first period of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, oil markets crashed and oil prices were governed by the number of world infection cases; the more people were infected, the less the oil prices were. However, after April 2020 the usual peculiarities started to restore. It is forecasted that, at least until 2040, the share of hydrocarbons in world energy consumption will remain stable, if not increase. Energy security and energy policy of any developed country represents a key issue for sustainable development. Thus, countries with a lack of hydrocarbon resources search for ensured sources of oil and gas. From this point of view, the vulnerable situation is characteristic for the EU, the energy security of which is entirely determined by Russian gas supply. However, the Ukraine-Russia "gas wars" in 2006 and 2009 have demonstrated that energy supply schedules to Europe should be diversified. From this point of view, neither the Nord Stream Pipeline nor the Southern Gas Corridor will solve the problem, mainly due to the resource deficit in Azerbaijan. In-depth analysis of Iran's economy and political structure demonstrates that: (i) the country's welfare is entirely determined by oil exports; (ii) having the second world rank in gas reserves, Iran is exporting only an insignificant amount of gas; (iii) all attempts of President Rouhani to introduce free market relations in the country and to create hope for a better future failed due to U.S. sanctions; (iv) the latter resulted in just the opposite effect they aimed to achieve: they were unable to reduce oil exports from Iran to zero but, on the contrary, created the shadow oil exports totally controlled by the Revolutionary Guard Corp; (v) the sole possibility to provoke democratic development in Iran and to cancel financing of terroristic organizations via diminishing the role of ecclesiastic leaders is the involvement of the country in international energy transit projects governed by the rule of law. The energy transit projects are unfeasible without the involvement of Georgia, which will become the Eurasian energy hub. This book describes these projects in detail. Implementation of these projects will (i) diminish the role of Russia in the EU energy market; (ii) ensure stability in the South Caucasus region, and (iii) provoke democratic reforms in Iran and this way sustainably increase world stability and security.

Walking the Ground - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Walking the Ground - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Edwin Cole Bearss, born in 1923, is an American World War II wounded warrior of the Greatest Generation. As a U.S. Marine, he was shot four times by the Japanese in the South Pacific, but despite his wounds rose to become a giant among American historians as Chief Historian of the National Park Service and the leading published Civil War Historian as shown in the Ken Burns Civil War series. Today, at 96, he is an eminent history tour guide. In this first book of his memoir, he traces his ancestors, including a relative who was involved in the underground railroad to save Americans from slavery. We see him grow up on a Montana ranch, survive with his family through the Great Depression, and ride a horse to a one-room schoolhouse in below-zero temperatures. When he was ten years old, he would go to Chicago to see Babe Ruth hit a home run in the first All Star Game in 1933. Early in life, his beloved maternal grandmother Sara played Sacajawea with her two Bearss grandchildren as Lewis and Clark. His father, a Montana rancher and U.S. Marine, read Civil War history to him and his brother. These experiences at an early age seeded Ed's love of history, particularly military history, and he would go on to map the progress of armies in the 1935 Italo-Ethiopian War, the 1937 Spanish Civil War, and then track Hitler's conquests of Austria and Czechoslovakia and finally Hitler's attack on Poland. He joined the U.S. Marines as soon as possible after Pearl Harbor, following the example of his father and third cousin "Hiking Hiram" Bearss, a Medal-of-Honor awardee and noted World War I Colonel. Ed describes his efforts to join the Marines, though underage at 17. We follow his path to a string of Pacific Islands, where he and his comrades are strafed by Japanese warplanes and succumbing to malaria and yellow jaundice. We ride with him in a Higgins boat to the Yellow 1 invasion beach on New Britain Island and move with him on point through the jungle terrain. We are with him as hidden Japanese pillboxes open fire on him and his buddies, as he sees them get hit one by one. We hear his thoughts and actions as he saved himself from certain death, and the moment when a few inches of dirt saved his life, his first lesson about the importance of terrain in battle. He describes his buddy's silent deaths, whose voices were forever stilled, that would motivate him to speak for them in later life. We experience his recovery in several hospitals, his return to Montana as a fishing tour guide, college, first jobs and taking his first Civil War tours. Finally, we walk the ground with him at the Shiloh Battlefield, launching his devotion to walking the ground in the National Park Service. He is an example for all Wounded Warriors to never give up.
