Peter Dickinson: Blue Rose Variations

The Blue Rose Variations is one of several works in which the composer has drawn on ragtime and blues. The organ work is based on two transformations of the popular piano piece To A Wild Rose (Woodland Sketches, Op.51 No.1) by the American composer, Edward MacDowell (1860-1908). During the course of the Variations, To A Wild Rose appears as a blues and also as a classical rag, often as both together.The sections are Theme: a quiet blues; Variation I: a pedal solo in varied metres based on the blues in fast tempo; Variation II: the first appearance of the rag as a background to the blues as a 2' pedal solo; Variation III: a version of Variation I now involving manuals too; Variation IV: another blues solo against the rag; Variation V: another version of Variation I with the pedal solo almost entirely transferred to the manuals; Variation VI: a final confrontation between the blues and the rag, now much decorated. First performed in New York in April 1986. Duration c.15 mins.

The tune remains in the Soprano Voice with traditional and effective harmonization.Tradition has it that David Owain was a famous Welsh harpist of the 18th century who, on his deathbed, composed this lovely tune. Words were added a century later by poet Ceiriog Hughes. David of the White Rock is widely known in Wales and abroad and is frequently sung by choirs and recorded, often with harp accompaniment.

It is a sceneof devastation and despair, and also, it seemed to me, of latent anger and hostility... butabove it all a serene blue sky beckons. So, perhaps even in the darkest moments there is aglimmer of hope - the possibility of change.This idea became the starting point for this work - Towards the Blue - a mini concerto forclarinet, who eventually becomes the leader of the group.The work starts without the clarinet and all is desolate, yet fiercely argumentative,discordant and uncomfortable. Suddenly the offstage clarinet is heard and the players insurprise are quietened. However, when the clarinet enters and approaches with a lyricalmusical motif, some of the players respond, others resist. A new engraving of Thomas Attwood's delightful miniature, Come Holy Ghost, this piece is suitable for Whitsundtide or for general use. Thomas Attwood (1765-1838) is perhaps best known as the composer of such charming miniatures as Come, Holy Ghost, which is in essence a simple, threeverse hymn. Its elegant melody, first sung by soprano, then by a chorus (or quartet and chorus) is reminiscent of Mozart?s delicate masterpiece, Ave verum corpus.This is perhaps unsurprising ?Attwood took composition lessons from Mozart in Vienna, and one of his contemporaries quotes Mozart as saying: ?He partakes more of my style than any scholar I ever had; and I predict, that he will prove a sound musician.? Attwood worked closely with the royal family throughout his life. He taught music to the Prince of Wales, was appointed composer and eventually organist to the Chapel Royal, and organist at St Paul?s Cathedral (he is buried under the organ there). He wrote the anthem I was glad for the coronation of King George IV.

Stuart MacRae's Piano Sonata was commissioned by the City Music Society and first performed by Philip Fowke at a City Music Society lunchtime concert on 27 October 1998.The composer writes: 'By the time I started writing the Piano Sonata in 1998 I had been thinking for a while about the possibilities of making works out of two separate parts which would balance one another. In order for this to be effective the two parts would have to be more or less self-sufficient, and have their own internal balance: in fact the first movement has been performed several times as a piece in its own right; the second movement has its own material until near the end when a sort of coda mixes the material from the two movements (albeit inconclusively).'
