McCabe: John Bagatelles for Two Clarinets

Bagatelles is a work for two Bb Clarinets, composed in 1965 by John McCabe . There are eight in total, each lasting around a minute: Con fuoco, ma non troppo allegro - Andante - Allegro giocoso - Fugatississimo - Adagio - Bossa Nova - Crescendo - Fantasy . John McCabe (1939-2015) was a British composer, pianist and music administrator. He studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the RNCM), and built a career as a virtuoso pianist. However, he also wrote several hundred musical compositions, ranging from large-scale orchestral works to chamber music and solo instrumental pieces - it is said the only classical genre he did not write for was opera. He also held positions at numerous educational institutions across the UK, Australia and the United States.

John Joubert: Pro Pace Motets for Double Choir

These three motets, Pro Pace, though written at different times, form a triptych on the subject of peace. The first to be composed was Libera Plebem, composed for and first performed at the Attingham Park Summer School, 1955. The text is a 9th century Latin poem, in the form of a prayer for deliverance from the Black Death.The second motet, which was composed last, is a 10th century Latin lament for the day on which man first invented weapons for use against his own kind, and a protest against such use.The final motet, the longest and most elaborate of the set, traces the Passion story from its sombre and tragic beginnings to its hopeful and triumphant end. It is a setting of a Latin poem by Peter Abelard, and its function in the triptych is to equate the victory of Christ's Passion with the eventual victory of non-violence.

John Stainer: Jubilant March For Organ

This work, Jubilant March for Organ, is one of many original works that Stainer composed for Novello. It suggests that the high esteem in which Stainer was held by his contemporaries for the excellence of his Organ playing was not misplaced, and is quite a rare Stainer work by virtue of its non-religious nature.John Stainer’s life coincided almost exactly with the reign of Queen Victoria. From his humble beginnings as the son of a cabinet maker, he rose through his own brilliant musical gifts, application, and vision to become one of the most celebrated musical persons of his time. He is still remembered for having reOrganized the St Paul’s choir and for raising musical standards among church musicians in general, and for his pioneering musicological research into early music. His hymns and arrangements of carols retain some popularlity today, as does his Passiontide oratorio The Crucifixion.

Thea Musgrave: Green for twelve strings (Full Score)

Commissioned by the Scottish Ensemble first performed on 15th December 2008 at Queen?s Cross Church, Aberdeen.Programme note"This short work is about conflict ? expressed here by the clash of opposing musical forces. One ?force? an ?arioso? is based around the harmonic field of E and is melodic, tonal, straightforward, and, at times, emotional. It is mainly led by the first violin. The other ?force? led by the double bass, is strongly discordant [at first a single note F later gradually growing to a giant cluster]. It is essentially chordal [non-melodic], static, suffocating, inexorable and impersonal. Its only contrast is getting louder or getting softer, getting denser, or less dense.The interruption of the opening ?arioso? by a single note F on the double bass is atfirst not very threatening and the reaction to it is one of surprise. Later as the threatincreases so the reaction becomes stronger; at first one of irritation, then anger. Apassionate outburst on the violins follows which falls on deaf ears. Then a soloviolin, solo viola and solo cello all appeal in turn: still no response. Finally onlyfragments of the original ?arioso? are heard before dying away.Whereas near the beginning of the work the F on the double bass was an intrusivediscord to the E of the ?arioso?, now at the end a high lingering E on the solo viola [all that is left of the original ?arioso?] is a discord to the giant cluster based on F.Many parallels to this conflict can of course be drawn from real life.
