The Hottest Girl at Burn Camp - Krystal Evans - Bog - Octopus Publishing Group - Plusbog.dk

The Hottest Girl at Burn Camp - Krystal Evans - Bog - Octopus Publishing Group - Plusbog.dk

''The guiltiest of literary pleasures: a memoir that you open with trepidation and stay up til 6am to finish'' KATE SPICER, author of Lost Dog . When Krystal Evans was 14, the house that she shared with her mother and little sister burned down. Krystal narrowly escaped by breaking a window and jumping out head-first; suffering burns, smoke inhalation, PTSD - and the unimaginable tragedy of losing her six year-old sister. But horrific as events were, the account of what led the family to that fatal night, and how they coped with its aftermath, is a richer and more complex story. Writing with skill and candour to find light in the darkest of places, this is Krystal Evans'' story of growing up poor in America, living with a mentally ill mother, and having a wolf for a pet (really). From the indignities of being rejected from ''burn camp'' for being ''too attractive'', to putting up with a succession of her mom''s increasingly dangerous and shady friends and partners, Krystal and Katie''s childhoods were marked by adult chaos, inappropriate behaviour, and never knowing what the next day would bring. The Hottest Girl At Burn Camp is Krystal''s story of how she grew from the ashes of disaster into the confident, funny, and (reasonably) well-hinged adult, mother and comedian that she is today. At the same time, funny, tragic and inspiring, it is the story of a family dangerously close to the edge, and of a girl struggling to make her way into adulthood, once the smoke clears.

The Children of Hiroshima - Sadako Teiko Okuda - Bog - Octopus Publishing Group - Plusbog.dk

The Children of Hiroshima - Sadako Teiko Okuda - Bog - Octopus Publishing Group - Plusbog.dk

The little boy did not cry or speak. He just stood there and stared at me intensely. With great effort I stood up and tested to see if I could walk with my injured foot. When I did, he came to stand even closer to me and, without saying a word, grabbed my little finger very tightly. Sadako Teiko Okuda was living in Osaki-shimo, an island off the mainland of Japan, when the bomb hit Hiroshima on the 6th of August 1945. Even sixty kilometers from the city, it was clear something horrific had happened. There was a blinding flash and the window next to Sadako smashed, a shard of glass leaving a painful burn on her neck. Soon, news came that her niece and nephew who lived in Hiroshima were missing. There was only one thing she could do - leave the relative safety of the island and set off into the city to find them. In the seven long days that followed, Sadako roamed the ruins of the city, desperately hoping that she would catch sight of her family. Instead, she came across dozens of other children who were alone, distraught and in pain. Carrying only water and a little medicine, she did her best to nurse the children and offer what care, compassion and tenderness she could in unimaginable circumstances. And in turn, they helped her to find hope in the very darkest of times. Told simply and powerfully in daily diary entries, The Children of Hiroshima is an extraordinary and deeply moving human story of loss, innocence and hope.

The Insomnia Diaries - Miranda Levy - Bog - Octopus Publishing Group - Plusbog.dk

A Telegraph readers'' best book of the year A Financial Times readers'' best 2021 summer book ''A powerful new book'' - The Daily Mail ''Quite the story... fascinating'' - Claire Byrne, RTE1''This memoir meets manual with expert tips is both honest and helpful'' - Victoria Woodhall, Get the Gloss FOREWORD BY DR SOPHIE BOSTOCK ''29th June 0 HOURS, 0 MINUTES Eleven forty-seven pm. A door slams as the neighbour''s teenage son comes home from the pub. An hour later, the last Tube rumbles past and I thump my pillow over to find a cool spot. I refuse to open the window because of my fear of hearing the first bird of morning, confirmation that the next day is about to start and I have failed, yet again. Failed in my quest to sleep, which one would think is a basic human right. But I am not a POW whose captors breach the Geneva Convention. No one has stolen my sleep from me. I am not wired up to electrodes, a neon light is not shining in my face all night long. I have blackout blinds and a king-size bed all to myself. My enemies are my brain and a body that has forgotten how to shut down.'' After a single, catastrophic event, journalist Miranda Levy had one sleepless night, then another, and then another. She sought help from anyone she could: doctors, a therapist, an acupuncturist, a hypnotist, a reiki practitioner and a personal trainer - but nothing seemed to work.Sleep, wellbeing and mental health are intrinsically linked. Yet sleeplessness is surprisingly common: 16 million of us suffer from insomnia, and the sleep industry is worth £100 billion ( Daily Mail ). In The Insomnia Diaries , Miranda Levy tells the story of her experience of severe, disabling insomnia that affected every aspect of her life for years, and how she ultimately recovered. Part memoir, part reportage, this book will help anyone who struggles to get a good night''s sleep - whether occasionally or all of the time - appreciate the issues and understand the options as they find their best way to get the rest they need. Dr Sophie Bostock, scientist, sleep expert and member of the team who developed the award-winning digital programme Sleepio, contributes a foreword. She and a host of expert contributors have advised on the medical elements within the text throughout.

A Sense of Place - Dave Broom - Bog - Octopus Publishing Group - Plusbog.dk

A Sense of Place - Dave Broom - Bog - Octopus Publishing Group - Plusbog.dk

2023 Spirited Awards Top 4 Finalist for Best New Book on Drinks Culture, History, or Spirits A personal journey exploring Scotch whiskey through its terroir, including the land, weather, history, craft and culture that feeds and enhances the whisky itself. “Mr. Broom, who was born in Glasgow and has been writing about spirits for decades, is the perfect author for this beautiful, evocative book. He knows the whisky territory intimately and the people well, and he has the senses of wonder, empathy and history to tie them altogether, as well as the skill to conjure up the smell of the salt air, the sound of barley shimmering in the wind, the vibrations of hammers shaping copper into stills and the singe of the oak staves as a cooper bends them over fire...With beautiful photography by Christina Kernohan, this is the book to give any lover of single malt, along with a bottle of their favorite whisky.” The Year's Best Books on Wine (and Whisky), The New York Times “Beautifully written and illustrated.” Fiona Beckett, the Guardian “This is an engaging, humane and important book. I cannot recommend it too strongly.” Charlie MacLean Keeper Magazine “A Sense of Place blends pin-sharp writing with evocative photography in a book to savour and treasure.” - Ian Rankin “A book so beautifully tweedy I actually want to wear it as a hat. I am very glad it includes a map as Dave's authoritative guide has given me many great whisky-holiday ideas.” Damian Barr “Dave Broom's whisky odyssey is in many ways a story of Scotland and the questions we face....Like a good dram, it's complex, and Dave makes an excellent guide... Christina Kernohan's beautiful photographs of the places and people featured in the book add texture and vibrancy to the stories: a window into the distilleries and lives of the craftspeople.” Best of Scotland “ Few can match [Broom's] ability to blend together critical thinking, insight and industry knowledge while giving the resulting mix a romantic twist.” Whisky Magazine In this beautifully crafted narrative, award-winning writer Dave Broom examines Scotch whisky from the point of view of its terroir - the land, weather, history, craft and culture that feed and enhance the whisky itself. Travelling around his native Scotland and visiting distilleries from Islay and Harris to Orkney and Speyside, Dave explores the whiskies made there and the elements in their distilling, and locality, which make them what they are. Along the way he tells the story of whisky's history and considers what whisky is now, and where it is going. With stunning specially commissioned photography by Christina Kernohan, A Sense of Place will enhance and deepen every whisky drinker's understanding of just what is in their glass.
