International Cooperation When Mistrust Deepens - Eva Heims - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

International Cooperation When Mistrust Deepens - Eva Heims - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

In the years leading up to the outbreak of war in 1914, Britain was collaborating closely with Germany on the development of an improved telegraph service, despite preparations for war also being made by both countries. This cooperation rested upon both states'' intensive participation in the global regulatory regime for telecommunications. Why states commit to cooperating in such multilateral regimes with other states while their relationship struggles with deepening mistrust is a longstanding puzzle. As tensions rise among great powers today and international organisations struggle again, this puzzle is as important now as it was when international regulatory regimes first emerged. The book challenges many of the conventional explanations for this puzzling situation and draws on neo-Durkheimian institutional theory to develop a novel explanation. It examines the case of Britain''s relationship with the first global regulatory regime, which was concerned with international telegraphy, submarine telegraph cables, and radiotelegraphy from the 1860s through to 1914. The regime was created in a time of European wars and growing imperial conflicts. Although Britain seriously contemplated leaving the International Telegraph Union in 1901-2, the state went on to deepen cooperation with other countries in telegraphy, including with Germany even as preparations for war advanced. Drawing on extensive archival sources, Perri 6 and Eva Heims show that social organisation in government can cultivate institutional buffering between aspects of external policy which can sustain commitment despite deepening conflict. In doing so, they show how a neo-Durkheimian approach provides a powerful explanation for deepening cooperation even as mistrust rises, which has significant implications for understanding state formation.

Interactive Political Leadership - Eva Sørensen - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Interactive Political Leadership - Eva Sørensen - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Building on recent theories of interactive governance and political leadership, Interactive Political Leadership develops a concept of interactive political leadership and a theoretical framework for studying the role of elected politicians in the age of governance. The purpose of the theoretical framework is to inspire and guide empirical research into how elected politicians perform political leadership in a society where citizens and other stakeholders play an active role in making and implementing political decisions and what barriers, challenges, and dilemmas they encounter in relation to the performance of interactive political leadership. The research framework draws extensively on recent theories of interactive governance and political leadership and other new developments in political science and public administration research. Moreover, it finds inspiration in current tendencies and embryonic examples of interactive political leadership performed by elected politicians operating at different levels of governance in Western liberal democracies. The basic assumption is that political legitimacy is essential for the survival of a political system, and that interactive political leadership stands out as a promising way of securing what political scientists denote as input-, throughput-, output-, and outcome legitimacy in the age of governance. Hence, interactive political leadership aims to establish a bridge between representative democracy and emergent forms of political participation, to promote political learning and accountability, to strengthen the political entrepreneurship of elected politicians, and to advance the political system''s implementation capacity through resource mobilization. The book develops 20 propositions that sets the agenda for a new and much needed field of empirical research into political leadership in the age of governance.

Company Law - Eva In Law Micheler - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Company Law - Eva In Law Micheler - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

This book advances a real entity theory of company law, in which the company is a legal entity which acts autonomously in law, and company law establishes procedures facilitating autonomous organisational decision-making. The theory builds on the insight that organisations or firms are a social phenomenon outside of the law and that these are autonomous actors in their own right. They are more than the sum of the contributions of their participants and they act independently of the views and interests of their participants. This occurs because human beings change their behaviour when they act as members of a group or an organisation; in a group we tend to develop and conform to a shared standard, and when we act in organisations habits, routines, processes, and procedures form and a culture emerges. These take on a life of their own affecting the behaviour of the participants. Participants can affect organisational behaviour but this takes time and effort. Company law finds this phenomenon and supplies it with a structure supporting autonomous action by organisations. The real entity theory advanced in this book explains company law as it stands at a positive level. Legal personality overcomes the problems that organisations are social rather than brute facts and that there is no unique physical manifestation permanently associated with an organisation. The corporate constitution is not a contract - it is best characterised as an instrument adopted on a statutory basis through private action. Shareholders cannot limit the capacity of companies or the authority of the board to bind the company in contract and companies are liable in tort and crime. The statute creates roles for shareholders, directors, a company secretary, and auditors and so facilitates a process leading to organisational action. The law also integrates the interests of creditors and stakeholders.

Style and Assemblage in Roman Archaeology - Dr Eva Mol - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Style and Assemblage in Roman Archaeology - Dr Eva Mol - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Style and Assemblage in Roman Archaeology proposes a rethinking of the way in which objects, styles, concepts, and people relate in archaeological interpretation, using Egyptian and Egyptian-styled objects from the houses of Roman Pompeii as a case study. Integrating anthropological theories, Mol has developed a critical new method termed relational perception to show how we can better incorporate the messy and intuitive processes of style perception and classification in the Roman past, as well as more generally in archaeological research. The houses of Pompeii yielded many objects that scholars nowadays would label as Egyptian or Egyptianized. They consist of imported and locally produced objects such as figurines, sculptures, furniture, jewellery, mosaics, or wall paintings. The interpretations regarding their presence and meaning have traditionally mostly been drawn without proper contextual analysis or theoretical underpinnings, and even more problematic: the collection and interpretation of artefacts were based on modern scholarly perceptions of what Egypt entails. Mol shows how this particular Western (and colonial) perception and art historical categorization has influenced our idea of Egypt in the Roman world, and how it still affects the interpretation of foreign objects in general. This book examines in detail how ''foreign'' objects and styles were integrated in, and shaped, the Roman world and senses of personhood, and serves as an excellent example to illustrate the complexity that should be integral to the processes of archaeological classification and interpretation.
