Fat, Stressed, and Sick - Barbara Price - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Fat, Stressed, and Sick - Barbara Price - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Presents the scientific evidence that glutamate—aka MSG—in processed food contributes to a suite of preventable inflammatory diseases. Fat, Stressed, and Sick makes the case that processed food compromises health not just because of added sugar, salt, and fat, but also because these foods contain significant amounts of glutamate—aka MSG. MSG makes food deliciously addicting. What was not well-known until described here is that most of the MSG in processed food is created during food manufacturing. As the authors show, food processing of protein alone adds 10 grams or more a day of MSG to the average American diet—a statistic that may surprise you. The book details the research linking dietary glutamate to a suite of inflammatory diseases: obesity, diabetes, autism, addiction, depression, and cancer, to name a few. Understanding the role of MSG in disease became the quest of author and biochemist Katherine Reid when she learned that her young daughter’s autism symptoms were associated with inflammation of the brain. Reid made the connection between inflammation and glutamate in the diet—a connection amply supported by other studies. A deep dive into food manufacturing patents and FDA regulations revealed that, in addition to industry practices that create MSG during food processing, MSG is also found in ingredients labeled “hydrolyzed protein,” “yeast extract,” and even “natural flavors,” misleading labels that disguise a food’s true MSG content. In what became an experiment in her home kitchen, Reid examined every ingredient on every food label, removing all items with MSG and replacing them with whole foods. The results were swift and undeniable. Reid’s discovery that what one ate mattered was the start of a program of food-based solutions to chronic inflammatory illnesses, through which now, a decade later, she has helped thousands of people. The idea that large amounts glutamate in the diet jeopardizes health is supported by decades of research, despite efforts by the glutamate industry to discredit the scientific evidence that MSG poses a risk. Some would have you believe the science is settled. It is not. This book explains the science behind why we crave the MSG in processed food, why it is hidden, how it is making us sick, and what we can do about it.

China's Foreign Political and Economic Relations - Dirk H. Schmidt - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

China's Foreign Political and Economic Relations - Dirk H. Schmidt - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

This balanced and thoughtful book presents a thorough analysis of the dynamics of China’s foreign relations. Sebastian Heilmann and Dirk H. Schmidt provide a comprehensive and discriminating view of the complex, often competing factors (domestic influences, regional tensions, global uncertainties) that shape Chinese foreign policy. They portray the PRC as a land of multiple identities—a nation that is becoming more assertive in East Asia as it explores novel approaches to its foreign economic policies, while simultaneously displaying thin-skinned sensitivities when confronted with international criticism. The authors argue that unconventional approaches to foreign relations—in particular a unique combination of long-term strategies with multilevel policy experiments—are driving Chinese global expansion. The provocative and challenging final chapter, designed to spur discussion, considers China’s imperial identity warring against the decentralized activities conducted in the “shadow of the empire.” Illicit transnational “guerilla-like” networks have thus become powerful driving forces behind the continued development of China’s foreign policy as well as its foreign-trade relations. The authors contend that the activities of these “niche nomads,” with their largely invisible or chameleon-like presence, constitute the most alarming dimension of China’s foreign relations as they gain ground and resources in many parts of the world with the potential to shake the very foundations of other societies.

Operation Devil Horns - Ray Bolger - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Special Agent Michael Santini offers an inside account of the takedown of MS-13 in San Francisco—one of the largest federal takedowns of a criminal gang in U.S. history. In a bid to take down MS-13’s criminal network in the Mission District of San Francisco, Michael Santini, a special agent with Homeland Security Investigations, recruits a pair of hardened gang members and convinces them to risk their lives as criminal informants. Set in a city with one of the strictest sanctuary policies protecting illegal immigrants in America, Operation Devil Horns illustrates how politically correct ideology impacts life-or-death crime fighting on the streets. Through the informants’ eyes, Operation Devil Horns offers a rare glimpse into the pervasive criminal subculture of MS-13, a gang of Spanish-speaking immigrants that still terrorizes pockets of American society today – including their own compatriots. The case begins with a focus on the gang in San Francisco, eventually widening to include a network that reaches across borders. Santini tracks down the gang’s leadership from the Bay Area to the prison cells of corrupt Central American regimes. Eventually, it takes the cold-blooded murder of three family members in San Francisco to shake the American public out of complacency and focus sober attention on a growing and violent threat. This is the story of a dedicated team of special agents, federal prosecutors, and local police who overcome political and legal challenges to take down more than two dozen violent criminal targets.

Constipation Nation - Carmen Fong - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Constipation Nation - Carmen Fong - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

A definitive guide to the science and history of constipation across the nation. Most Americans have had constipation symptoms at some point in their lives. Statistics show up to 30% of Americans are affected with chronic constipation. This number reaches 60% as we age. At any given time up to 100 million people in the United States have constipation. During the pandemic, constipation and its related anorectal issues worsened because everyone was sitting at home. Constipation has affected humans throughout history. Some called it “civilization’s curse.” Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (yes, of Kellogg’s cereal fame) promoted cold cereal as a constipation cure. Today, we have more probiotics and diets than you can shake your tushy at, and social media has popularized the Blue Poop Challenge to diagnose gut health. But what does it all mean? After seeing thousands of patients in her practice as a colorectal surgeon, Dr. Fong realized that she was repeating the same information, sometimes twenty times a day. Yet, this information was not common knowledge. What was found on the Internet was confusing and conflicting, leaving people who Googled their symptoms with more questions than answers. As an academic clinician who has written peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Fong sought information beyond even what the medical textbooks taught her. Constipation Nation helps readers who would rather research information themselves before seeing a healthcare professional to troubleshoot their poop chute. Drawing from 200 evidence-based sources as well as historical texts, Constipation Nation addresses all aspects of constipation, combining medicine, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, nutrition, history, and social sciences to get to the bottom of it all to explain why we doo… and why we don’t.

The Amusement Park at Sloan's Lake - David Forsyth - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The Amusement Park at Sloan's Lake - David Forsyth - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Sloan’s Lake had a long history of entertaining Denver residents with boating, fishing, swimming, and a steamboat canal built in the 1870s. In 1890, Adam Graff and his partners opened a new park on the shore of Sloan’s Lake that would eventually become Manhattan Beach. Originally created as a summer pleasure resort with a highly respected summer theater, boating, fishing, and music, the park quickly expanded to include typical amusement attractions, including Denver’s first roller coaster and merry-go-round. When the concept of the amusement park was created in 1895 with the opening of Sea Lion Park on Coney Island in New York, Manhattan Beach was already a step ahead of rivals Elitch Gardens and Arlington Park. Operating from 1890 to 1914, Manhattan Beach Amusement Park was the first true amusement park in Denver and was enjoyed by residents and visitors for nearly twenty-five years as Denver tried to shake off its image as a dusty cow town from gold mining days and fought to be seen as a sophisticated and well-developed city. Manhattan Beach played an important role in amusement park history in the United States, but its full story has never before been told. Manhattan Beach’s story is an important addition to both Denver and Colorado’s history as it reflects the city’s growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The park has also inspired many legends, the most famous of which concerns Roger the Elephant, who arrived at Manhattan Beach in 1891, and his supposed death and burial in a swamp near the park. Much of what has been told about Manhattan Beach in the years since it closed is more myth than fact, as this book demonstrates. After the amusement park closed in 1914, the city of Denver purchased the land and turned it into Sloan’s Lake Park, which continues to be a gathering place for Denverites.

New England Desserts - Tammy Donroe Inman - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

New England Desserts - Tammy Donroe Inman - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Since the very first taste of maple syrup, New Englanders have pined for something sweet. The region’s native plants (corn, squash, pumpkins), orchard fruits, fresh dairy products, even the early ice industry, all converged during the past four centuries to create culinary inspiration that seeded our developing nation for generations. From the mountains of Maine to the farms of Vermont to the beachside villages of Cape Cod, New England has earned a reputation for fantastic desserts. What first started out as necessary, high-calorie sustenance has become an exercise in pleasure and a celebration of the seasons. Indeed, it’s not officially summer in New England until shortcake is soaked in sweet strawberries and cream. Soon blueberries, cherries, peaches, blackberries, and plums make an appearance, begging for crisp, nutty toppings, buttery crusts, and a melting pool of vanilla ice cream. Whether it’s the cold, snowy winters that beckon us into the warmth of the kitchen or the excitement each change of season brings, New Englanders know how to sweeten the pot by bringing out the best in local ingredients. The result of this vibrant seasonal calendar is a rich repertoire of flavors ripe for celebration and reinvention. New England Desserts offers enticing recipes for fresh homemade cakes, cookies, candies, pies, crisps, cobblers, crumbles, and ice cream—not just in the summertime, but all year round. Tuck into regional classics like Maine Whoopie Pies, Indian Pudding, Penuche, and Boston Cream Pie. But equally important is the opportunity to improvise and shake things up a bit with modern interpretations of traditional desserts, like Mixed Berry Tiramisu, Maple Walnut Cake with Whipped Mascarpone, and Baked Acadia (a low-key riff on Baked Alaska in which a scoop of homemade ice cream is encased in a prebaked crispy meringue shell). The recipes are organized by season to allow the cook to coordinate his or her baking projects with the time of year when local produce is at its peak. There’s also a bonus chapter for homemade ice cream, which remains an all-season favorite in New England (and beyond). Pair these scoops with fresh toppings and the bake shop desserts from the previous chapters to create exquisitely delicious and creative sundaes. Ample photographs of the region’s natural beauty, local ingredients, and casual, rustic recipes are key to appealing to the senses of an audience hungering for a collection of New England’s best dessert recipes all in one place.
