Driving With Care: Education and Treatment of the Underage Impaired Driving Offender - Harvey B. Milkman - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Driving with Care: Education and Treatment of the Underage Impaired Driving Offender is a supplementary guide for the Driving with Care Series. It deals specifically with Adolescent/young adult impaired driving, which presents a host of special challenges and special treatment issues. Underage impaired driving represents 15% of the DUI arrests nationwide, which translates into roughly 150,000 individuals a year. Underage drivers present a special challenge for education and treatment as their motivation to drink and drive is often quite different from the adult offender. Thus, the authors have compiled a rich set of educational protocols and treatment strategies that can supplement the various levels of treatment provided in all three Driving with Care workbooks. Section I provides a theoretical foundation for understanding underage impaired driving, including the scope, incidence, and prevalence of the problem and defines the causal and risk factors associated with underage drinking and driving. It also defines and covers legal and regulatory interventions that have been effective for treatment and provides guidelines that enhance the treatment and rehabilitation of this group. Section II provides specific guidelines and enhancements for the delivery of DWC for underage drivers, including activities, handouts, and various assessment tools. SAGE offers treatment and training programs for mental health providers that you can easily incorporate into your existing programs.

Being Responsive to Cultural Differences - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book offers educators a comprehensive look at the state of teaching in the changing cultural mix of American education. It draws skillful pictures of the challenges and opportunities facing teacher education faculty and students as well as preservice teachers. In 12 chapters, the contributors explore training and teaching from a variety of perspectives. For example, follow a minority preservice teacher as she relates her difficulties with the older, White supervisors who test her resolve to be a teacher. Hear from a white teacher in a minority classroom on the progress of cultural responsiveness in practice. Find out how educators are (or aren′t) incorporating multicultural perspectives into their curricula. This thoroughly researched volume considers the burgeoning issue of cultural responsiveness in teacher education. Contributing authors use rich descriptions and examples of how these new responses look and feel in practice. Real-life stories clarify perspectives and provide ideas on how to incorporate these lessons into teacher education courses. This volume looks at how the education of millions of students of color is affected by their nearly-always-white teachers. The chapter authors offer opinions and suggestions for teacher educators to encourage preservice teachers to construct and expand their own skills and techniques for teaching 21st century populations in ways that are culturally responsive.

The Handbook of Services Marketing and Management presents state-of-the-art perspectives in the foundations of services, while simultaneously challenging and expanding current services practices. Homelessness and the Politics of Social Exclusion - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

" Homelessness is not one problem, but many different kinds of problems involving many different kinds of people, each of them homeless for different reasons or who have become homeless in different ways… Among the homeless of today are men, women, children, and whole families; victims of domestic violence and male abandonment; young, middle-aged, and elderly; veterans; illegal immigrants; persons of every ethnic description; people who are homeless for strictly economic reasons; others who are homeless because they drink and drug too much; the lucid and the deranged; and on through a long list… ." James Wright University of Central Florida Bringing together international perspectives from sociology, political science, public policy, criminology, urban studies, adolescent research, and social work, this fascinating April 2005 issue of American Behavioral Scientist (ABS), entitled Homelessness and the Politics of Social Exclusion focuses on pioneering research about how the homeless are marginalized in societies around the world and the consequences of this social exclusion. Based on presentations at the American Sociological Association′s 2003 Annual Meeting, the authors of this unique volume discuss: - - Why the characteristics of both Los Angeles and Berlin homeless populations are similar despite different welfare systems and public policies ( von Mahs ) - - How staff create, sustain, and escalate conflict in a drop-in center for street kids ( Joniak ) - - Structural changes in Japanese society and the recent growth of homelessness ( Hasegawa ) - - The risks and conditions of semipermanent makeshift housing such as RVs ( Wakin ) - - Whether the presence of homeless persons near or in residential areas is a mark of encroaching urban disorder that undermines neighborhood quality and engenders fear among neighborhood residents ( Farrell ) - - Marginality and criminal victimization among homeless people ( Lee and Schreck ) - - The complex relationships between homeless women and their intimate partners ( Wesley and Wright ) - - How peer networks affect substance abuse among newly homeless adolescents ( Rice, Milburn, Rotherham-Borus, Mallett, and Rosenthal ) - - Negotiating rules, power and social control within an emergency youth shelter ( Armaline ) Whether the original cause of a person′s homelessness is economic, social, cultural or political, homelessness carries a stigma This absorbing issue of American Behavioral Scientist offers new ways of observing this global social problem and should be included in every sociology, social work, and political science library!

Identities, Groups and Social Issues - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

`When considering a volume that has essentially the form of a textbook, particular criteria apply. It is important that it is accurate, up-to-date and covers an appropriate range of material in an accessible and stimulating manner. It is important that it is a flexible vehicle for use with diverse courses, and does not overly impose a particular or narrow intellectual structure. In all these respects, this text is to be recommended.... Finally, it is important that all students of social psychology should try to see the historical and cultural linkages that extend across and through its subject area, and this is the other message that comes across from this exceptionally well thought-through book ′ - Journal of Community and Applied Social Psychology This accessible and authoritative textbook presents an engaging overview of social psychological research on groups, the development of social identity, intergroup relations and the process of making sense of social life. Unlike other textbooks in this area, this book has a broad focus. It covers a representative mix of European and North American research, but also draws on psychoanalysis, social theory, discourse analysis and feminist writing to develop accounts of topics such as racism, social influence, group dynamics, the workplace and masculine identities. Classic studies are set alongside the most recent research in social psychology. The result is a book which is rich in ideas, interdisciplinary in nature, combative and critical. This book has been developed as a Course Text for The Open University course Social Psychology: Personal Lives, Social Worlds (D317) .
