Constructing Co-Cultural Theory - Mark P. Orbe - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Constructing Co-Cultural Theory - Mark P. Orbe - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

How do people traditionally situated on the margins of societyùpeople of color, women, gays/lesbians/bisexuals, and those from a lower socio-economic statusùcommunicate within the dominant societal structures? Constructing Co-Cultural Theory presents a phenomenological framework for understanding the intricate relationship between culture, power, and communication. Grounded in muted group and standpoint theory, this volume presents a theoretical framework that fosters a critically insightful vantage point into the complexities of culture, power, and communication. The volume comprises six chapters; key coverage includes: a review of critique of the literature on co-cultural communication; description of how the perspective of co-cultural group members were involved in each stage of theory development; an explication of 25 co-cultural communication strategies, and a model of six factors that influence strategy selection. The final chapter examines how co-cultural theory correlates with other work in communication generally and in intercultural communication specifically. Author Mark P. Orbe considers inherent limitations of his framework and the implication for future research in this area. Scholars and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students will find that this volume covers an important topic which will be of interest to those in the fields of communication, cultural studies, and race and ethnic studies.

Standards and Mastery Learning - James P. Lalley - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Standards and Mastery Learning - James P. Lalley - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

"I am quite enthusiastic about this book. As far as I know, no one has brought the perspective of mastery learning to the considerable dialogue about standards even though the connection is an obvious one. These authors clearly know mastery learning and will add greatly to the standards movement." Robert Marzano, Adjunct Associate Professor Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee, WI "The book makes a distinct contribution to the field. The integration of standards and mastery learning is important if standards, once established, are to be achieved by large numbers of students. I think it is timely, well organized, contains real-life examples, and is well written." Lorin Anderson, Carolina Distinguished Professor of Education University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC "This is one of the best books I have read on this topic. I can′t wait for it to be published so that I can give copies to each of the teachers at my school." RoseAnne Vojtek, Principal Ivy Drive Elementary School, Bristol, CT How to really mean it when we say, "all children can learn!" The adage that practice, or rather the right kind of practice, makes perfect is quite apparent in this new definitive book by J. Ronald Gentile and James P. Lalley, describing the concept of mastery learning in the classroom. Educators can instruct all students, regardless of their individual scholastic aptitudes, using the principles and philosophies of mastery learning. The key to this process is reinforcing and expanding initial learning through additional practice and higher-level exercises, enabling all students to reach high standards. Other key elements of this practical resource include: - - Usable ideas for educators and administrators on how to implement mastery learning in math, science, social studies, language arts, and other subject areas - - How to achieve mastery learning from a theoretical perspective - - How to assess effectiveness in achieving high standards - - Research evidence, details, features, and examples of good programs and lessons The cure for a student′s helplessness is competence, which increases both the feeling of self-efficacy, and the ability to achieve new learnings. Standards and Mastery Learning is the ideal book to enable educators to help students attain these goals. It examines national and state standards and shows how to attain them through mastery learning.

Attention Deficits and Hyperactivity in Children - Stephen P. Hinshaw - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Attention Deficits and Hyperactivity in Children - Stephen P. Hinshaw - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Another winner in Sage′s Developmental Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry Series, this time by a University of California, Berkeley psychologist. . . . Stephen P. Hinshaw′s chief goals are to provide adequate background information and to evaluate certain key debates and core questions that remain unacceptably answered at the present time. . . . He has managed to convey in accurate and readable fashion a remarkable amount of information in a relatively short space. Advances, challenges, and unresolved problems in diverse but relevant areas are meticulously analyzed and placed in context. As the comprehensive and well-chosen reference list bears testimony, the book is enriched by the fact that the author′s own work plays an important role in elaborating many of the key features of this still little understood but very prevalent disorder. This book will be of value to students, trainees, and professionals in both academic disciplines and more clinical areas. --Child & Family Behavior Therapy Children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often have major difficulties with achievement in school, and they often exhibit defiance, aggression, and other antisocial behaviors. Although there is abundant literature on ADHD, misinformation abounds. Serving to synthesize findings from the vast and often confusing array of information on this subject, Attention Deficits and Hyperactivity in Children provides concrete information regarding basic clinical, conceptual, diagnostic, etiologic, and treatment-related issues on ADHD. This volume illustrates and evaluates several key debates that have confronted the field for many years: Is there a valid syndrome characterized by attention deficits and/or hyperactivity? What tools can assessors use to gain optimal information about the disorder? Has the field achieved consensus with respect to the nature or underlying mechanisms of the behavioral difficulties these children display? Which factors predict subsequent functioning in adolescence and adulthood? Due to the great diversity of characteristics and causal influences related to ADHD, the author considers many perspectives including clinical, developmental, psychodiagnostic, psychobiologic, environmental/familial, and social cognitive viewpoints.

Consensus Organizing - Michael P. Eichler - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Consensus Organizing - Michael P. Eichler - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Empowering a community takes more than organizing and mobilizing its people; it takes a simple, yet radical, notion that consensus can be reached by creating mutual self interest between key individuals in the community and players of interest. In Consensus Organizing: Building Communities of Mutual Self Interest , author Mike Eichler shows how even poor and disempowered communities can achieve lasting results by implementing some key consensus organizing strategies. Through personal, lively, and relevant examples, Eichler takes the reader on a road trip through various communities and shows how collectively they were able to reach lasting results by finding key areas where consensus could be reached. Key features: - - The author shares his twenty-five years of experience as a community organizer, including the development of a national effort to train young people as consensus organizers in diverse locations such as Las Vegas, New Orleans, and New York City. - - Demonstrates how consensus organizing can be applied to a variety of settings, including public education, housing, economic development, health and crime. - - Gives readers the opportunity to learn more about themselves: It helps students to see the other side of any situation and understand how common ground can be achieved. - - It is written in a student-friendly, conversational manner, which will make students feel as if they have taken a journey with the author, struggled with the various communities, won the victories with the disempowered, and had a few laughs along the way. - Intended audience: This book can be used as a core textbook for courses in community organizing and as a supplemental volume in various macro social work courses on community practice. It can also be used in departments of social work, urban planning, public administration, and public health.

Liberal Democracy 3.0 - Stephen P. Turner - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

`This is a very fine text, a powerful piece of work that deserves to be read widely. The analysis is truly panoramic. It ranges across central concerns in the fields of social theory, political theory, and science studies and engages with and/or draws upon the ideas of key classical and contemporary thinkers, including Tocqueville, Weber, Schumpeter, Polyani, Habermas, Foucault, Schmitt and Beck'' - Barry Smart, Professor of Sociology, University of Portsmouth What are the political implications of ''expert'' knowledge and especially scientific knowledge for liberal democracy? If knowledge is not evenly distributed upon what basis can the philosophy of equal rights be sustained? This important book points to the crisis in knowledge in liberal democracies. This crisis, simply put, is that most citizens cannot understand, much less judge, the claims scientists make. One response is the appointment of public commissions to provide conclusions for policy-makers to act upon. There are also `commissions from below'', such as grass roots associations that quiz the limits of expert knowledge and power and make rival knowledge claims. Do these commissions represent a new stage in the development of liberal democracy? Or is it merely a pragmatic device of no political consequence. The central argument of the book is that in a `knowledge society'' in which specialized knowledge is increasingly important to politics, more has to be delegated because democratic discussion can''t handle it. This limitation in the scope of liberal democracy threatens its fundamental character. The book will be required reading in the fields of social theory, political theory and science studies.
