Smart Sentencing - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

In search of remedies to the growing problem of correctional crowding, federal, state, and local policy makers have begun to experiment with a range of new "intermediate" sanctions. These sanctions have taken a variety of forms--intensive probation supervision, home confinement, boot camps, day fines, residential community corrections, day reporting centers, and community service programs. In Smart Sentencing a distinguished panel of experts offers an in-depth assessment of the design, development, and impact of each of these intermediate sanctions while also discussing the most controversial issues surrounding the use of alternative punishments (e.g., the purpose of sanctions, effectiveness issues, gender bias, overrepresentation of minorities). The contributors also look at the future of intermediate sanctions and consider the many questions posed by criminal justice professionals and students regarding their continued development. "New concepts in sentencing are explored, including home supervision, electronic monitoring, boot camps, day fines, community service programs, residential community corrections, and day reporting centers." --The Women′s Advocate "Smart Sentencing is a rich, critical collection evaluating various intermediate sanctions such as community service, drug treatment programs, and electronic monitoring. Twenty articles by leading U.S. researchers ably chronicle progress made--and not made--by the movement for intermediate sanctions." --Update "Smart Sentencing is a rich and stimulating collection of reports from the field. Contributors to this volume are astute observers of criminal justice operations, and they rarely hesitate to describe problems when they see them. . . . Smart Sentencing is highly recommended and well worth reading. . . . While this volume strongly supports the ′intermediate sanction movement,′ it goes well beyond rhetoric by providing professional assessments of what works and what doesn′t work. It also outlines a direction for future studies of intermediate sanctions." --Federal Probation "A major contribution to the study of this resurgent field. . . . Smart Sentencing includes previously unpublished works from some renowned authorities on intermediate sanctions. The book is aimed at academics and correctional administrators who desire a better understanding of intermediate sanctions. In concert with that aim, the contributors keep the use of complex inferential statistics to a minimum, instead relying on descriptive methods of measuring diversion and cost savings. . . . Just as important, almost all of the articles lay conceptual and theoretical foundations for a particular sanction, something frequently neglected by in-house correctional researchers and administrators." --The Criminologist "This book provides a fairly detailed account of the experience of intermediate sanctions in America. . . . Overall, this is a useful book and the general quality of the contributions is high." --The Magistrate

Building Smart Teams - Carol A. Beatty - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Building Smart Teams - Carol A. Beatty - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Building Smart Teams is an essential guide to creating a smart team fast. Based on research results from close to 2,000 individuals organized in more than 250 teams, Building Smart Teams identifies the three critical skill sets that teams need and shows how to transfer these skills to a group. The authors′ research and experience shows that, by concentrating on these three critical skills sets, a group is almost certain to become a high performing team quickly. High-functioning teams are increasingly important to organizational success, but just throwing a team together will not give the desired results. Building Smart Teams gives you the theory and rationale behind high performance teams, but, in addition, it is packed with exercises, diagnostic tools, tips, and techniques to use with groups. The exercises are time-tested with the more than 100 groups trained by the authors. The approach is not to dictate the one best way for teams to behave, but, rather, to help team members build skills and implement processes to increase success. Within this model, there is ample room for teams to discover their own unique culture, performance strategies, and paths to success. Key Features: Team Effectiveness Model was developed from research into the factors that lead to team success—over 250 teams were studied Provides both theory and tools to get smart, fast results Identifies the three critical success factors for high team performance and provides a diagnostic tool to assess levels of team functioning for eachMany targeted processes and exercises that team leaders can apply to enhance team functioning Provides both the road map for creating effective teams (the Team Effectiveness Model) as well as the vehicles for getting there (exercises and process tools)

Each volume in the new American Presidents Reference Series is organized around an individual presidency and gathers a host of biographical, analytical, and primary source historical material that will analyze the presidency and bring the president, his administration, and his times to life. The series focuses on key moments in U.S. political history as seen through the eyes of the most influential presidents to take the oath of office. Unique headnotes provide the context to data, tables and excerpted primary source documents. Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858. He was elected to the New York state legislature in 1881. Following the death of his first wife, Alice Roosevelt, in February 1884, Roosevelt left politics to manage a cattle ranch in the Dakota Territory. In 1886 he returned to New York City, ran unsuccessfully for mayor, and married Edith Kermit Carow. Between 1889 and 1895 Roosevelt headed the U.S. Civil Service Commission. From 1895 to 1897 he served as president of the Police Commission in New York City. In 1897 President William McKinley appointed him assistant secretary of the navy. He resigned to serve in the military during the war against Spain. As lieutenant colonel he organized and led the Rough Riders, a regiment of cavalry, in Cuba. In 1889 Roosevelt narrowly won election as the New York State governor. The following year he accepted the Republican Party nomination as vice president on the McKinley reelection ticket. The ticket was victorious. On September 14, 1901, President McKinley died after being shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. At age forty-two Roosevelt became the youngest person to serve as president. Key policies and events during the Roosevelt administration were his antitrust efforts (culminating in the landmark 1904 Supreme Court decision Northern Securities Co. v. United States), ending the 1902 coal miners strike, acquiring the land to build the Panama Canal, introducing numerous pieces of reform legislation, and mediating the end to the Russo-Japanese War (an effort that won him the Nobel Peace Prize). In 1908 Roosevelt endorsed the election of his friend and secretary of war, William Howard Taft, to succeed him, but by 1910 he distanced himself from Taft. In 1912 Roosevelt unsuccessfully sought the Republican Party nomination to oust Taft. The Bull Moose Party, a third party of Republican progressives, was created and nominated Roosevelt. While campaigning, Roosevelt was barely sidetracked when he was shot in the chest. Splitting the Republican Party vote, Roosevelt finished in second place to Woodrow Wilson (Taft finished in third). On January 6, 1919, Theodore Roosevelt died. This new volume on the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt will cover his - - hard-charging personality, - - reformist, progressive domestic policies, - - environmental policies, - - role in the Republican and Bull Moose Parties, - - relationship with Congress, the Supreme Court, and the media, - - allegedly imperialistic foreign policies. -
