Although, as W.D. Billings notes in his chapter in this book. the development of physiological ecology can be traced back to the very beginnings of the study of ecology it is clear that the modern development of this field in North America is due in the large part to the efforts of Billings alone. The foundation that Billings laid in the late 1950s came from his own studies on deserts and subsequently arctic and alpine plants, and also from his enormous success in instilling enthusiasm for the field in the numerous students attracted to the plant ecology program at Duke University. Billings'' own studies provided the model for subsequent work in this field. Physiological techniques. normally confined to the laboratory. were brought into the field to examine processes under natural environmental conditions. These field studies were accompanied by experiments under controlled conditions where the relative impact of various factors could be assessed and further where genetic as opposed to environmental influences could be separated. This blending of field and laboratory approaches promoted the design of experiments which were of direct relevance to understanding the distribution and abundance of plants in nature. Physiological mechanisms were studied and assessed in the context of the functioning of plants under natural conditions rather than as an end in itself.

The International Joint Commission (IJC) was established between Canada and the United States under the Boundary Water Agreement in 1909. The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between the two countries (signed in 1972, revised and renewed in 1978) expresses the determination of each country to restore and en­ hance the water quality of the largest freshwater system in the world. The Agreement provides for two inter­ national boards to assist the IJC: the Great Lakes Water Quality Board and the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board. In 1982, the Dredging Subcommittee of the Great Lakes Water Quality Board was asked to investigate and provide an assessment of the environmental impacts of sediment-bound contaminants and to recom­ mend alternate strategies for solving ecological problems associated with the presence and removal of pollu­ tants. This issue however, was beyond the scope of the Dredging Subcommittee. It was then referred to the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board with a specific request that the Board focus on whether contaminated sediments located in areas with water quality problems and impaired uses should be removed and if so, under what conditions. The Science Advisory Board established a Task Force to address these issues with specific reference to: - provide the IJC with an assessment of the effects of sediment-bound contaminants on biota and water quality; - recommend appropriate remedies for possible application by the parties for remedial activities in the Great Lakes; and - identify gaps in knowledge and suggest appropriate investigations to provide this knowledge.

Following on from this, the reconstructive study asks what latent structures of meaning underlie the subjective crisis scenarios about the schooling of children and the ideal concepts of parents in the sense-giving justification of the family deschooling practice. In the course of this, three types of the justification for the familial practice of deschooling, namely defending, charismatizing, and escaping, are empirically established. In this way, the study not only makes an empirically based contribution to a more reflective discourse on alternative educational practices, but also pushes itself into a taboo zone of school pedagogy and educational research in Germany. In the face of great challenges, utopian thinking is currently in vogue. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book ''Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde'' (The Open Society and its Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism. In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf''s concept of life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf''s understanding of ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are capable of enabling life chances, the latter tend to limit them. Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side) consequences of various closed societies and how ill-suited they are for dealing with current challenges.

In fact, portal hypertension is only the result of an obstacle to the portal flow, the clinical manifestations of which often occur at a late stage of the disease: bleeding esophageal varices, splenomegaly, ascites. In addition, it is well known that there is not always a precise relationship between the degree of the obstruction, i.e. the decrease of the portal inflow and the level of the portal hypertension. A severe obstruction to the portal flow may therefore sometimes remain clinically inconspicuous for a long time. For this reason improvement of our knowledge of portal hypertension mainly relies on angiographic investigations. Thus, splenoportography permits the discovery of prehepatic obstructions whereas hepa­ tic venography permitted the recognition of two different types of intrahepatic obstruction according to the pre-sinusoidal or post -sinusoidal site of the obstacle. More recently, arterial hepatic changes could be evidenced through arteriography. However, these angiographic investigations have not yet allowed for all the problems about portal hypertension to be clearly identified.

This book contains a consensus on menopause research, a consensus reached during the First International Congress on the Menopause in June, 1976. The Congress brought together about 165 people, most of whom are engaged in research in this field, in the resort town of La Grande Motte, near Montpellier, France. It was planned so that the main emphasis would be on the exchange of information in small Workshop sessions. Workshop Chairmen were asked to present summaries of their deliberations at the closing session. It is these summaries that form the essence of this text. The Congress also included six Free Communications sessions. They are represented in this book by a small number of papers printed in full (selected from some 40 contributions in all) that in the opinion of the editors, contain data that particularly complement the Workshop summaries. All other papers are mentioned in these Pro­ ceedings by titles and by the name, affiliation and address of the first author. Organizing this Congress was a stimulating and heart-warming experience. It was done by the staff of the International Health Foundation in Brussels and Geneva, under the considerate auspices of the American Geriatric Society and the Medical Faculty of the University of Montpellier. We are deeply grateful to these two bodies.

Intensive research during the last few years particularly on the structure and disorders of connective tissue has considerably advanced our knowledge on this subject. We believe that the range of diseases covered, and the depth in which they were discussed, made this meeting unique. The proceedings contain much original material and reference information which should make them an invaluable addition to the literature on metabolic disorders. The work involved is multi-disciplinary involving among others physicists, organic chemists, biochemists, clinical chemists, paedia­ tricians, physicians, geneticists and neurologists. The bringing together of workers of many disciplines to contribute to the particular subject under discussion at our Symposia has always been an important objective of the Society. In this case we were very fortunate in gathering together experts from all the fields mentioned above. In particular we were honoured that Professor A. Dorfman of Chicago could accept our invitation to give the second Milner Lecture. We were also privileged to have some excellent contributions from the research scientists on whom we must rely for our ultimate understanding of the diseases, and rational approach to treatment.

After the allies landed on the Normandy beaches in 1944, the imme­ diate sense of celebration was followed by an acrimonious dispute as to the overall strategy. Eisenhower favoured the advance of all the armies on a broad front. Montgomery wanted to concentrate the bulk of the allied front on a narrow front, a rapier thrust to the heart of Germany. The broad front was bound to be slow. The rapier thrust was likely to be risky, because of the attentuation of supply lines and the danger of an exposed flank. These strategic issues were, as ever, complicated by personal ones. Montgomery''s sense of his own destiny made the idea of a rapier thrust led by him particularly attractive: the idea of Patton''s army advancing on a narrow front would almost certainly have seemed to him less appealing. Eisenhower, in his role as supreme allied comman­ der, undoubtedly wanted to be seen to be fair to each of the ambitious generals under his command. If so, advance on a broad front was inevitable. The parallels with scientific advance are striking. Inside each re­ searcher battling to push back the frontiers in this own particular small patch is a Montgomery.
