Physiological Ecology of North American Plant Communities - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Nutrition, Food Markets and Agriculture - Christian J. Jaggi - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Nutrition, Food Markets and Agriculture - Christian J. Jaggi - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Today, nutrition is mainly discussed under nutritional, medical-health or ideological aspects (e.g. vegetarianism, veganism, etc.). Although the food industry represents one of the most important markets, questions of food production, agriculture, food trade and biodiversity are mostly discussed under national auspices. Not only on the producer side, but also from the consumer perspective, food markets - although still nationally structured - have become more and more global markets, which can be seen, for example, in the development of food commodity prices. In addition, large food corporations are pursuing the strategy of standardizing the entire value chains in the agricultural and food sectors - under their control, mind you. The book addresses economic issues related to food production, agriculture, food trade and biodiversity. Alternatives to traditional agriculture, factory farming, and biodiversity loss are discussed - and reflected upon from an economic perspective. Particular attention is paid to aspects of globalization. This book is a translation of the original German 1 st edition Ernährung, Nahrungsmittelmärkte und Landwirtschaft by Christian J. Jäggi, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2018. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Problems in Gastroenterology - K.g. Williams - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Part one of the book presents the gastrointestinal problems that commonly face the general practitioner. Emphasis is placed on analysis of clinical data and how this may provoke the most profitable lines of investigation. Many of the investigation and treatment protocols are within the scope of general practice, but hospital management is also included. It was possible to deal with common oesophageal diseases under the heading of oeso phageal problems in Part 1. In contrast, it proved impossible to discuss adequately all of the common diseases affecting other organs of the digestive system under the problem headings. For this reason, a fuller ac count of many common alimentary diseases is provided in Part two. M. L.-5. K. G. D. W. 9 Series Foreword This series of books is designed to help general practitioners. So are other books. What is unusual in this instance is their collec tive authorship; they are written by specialists working at district general hospitals. The writers derive their own experi ence from a range of cases less highly selected than those on which textbooks are traditionally based. They are also in a good position to pick out topics which they see creating difficulties for the practitioners of their district, whose personal capacities are familiar to them; and to concentrate on contexts where mistakes are most likely to occur. They are all well-accustomed to working in consultation.

Ecological Effects of In Situ Sediment Contaminants - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Ecological Effects of In Situ Sediment Contaminants - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The International Joint Commission (IJC) was established between Canada and the United States under the Boundary Water Agreement in 1909. The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between the two countries (signed in 1972, revised and renewed in 1978) expresses the determination of each country to restore and en hance the water quality of the largest freshwater system in the world. The Agreement provides for two inter national boards to assist the IJC: the Great Lakes Water Quality Board and the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board. In 1982, the Dredging Subcommittee of the Great Lakes Water Quality Board was asked to investigate and provide an assessment of the environmental impacts of sediment-bound contaminants and to recom mend alternate strategies for solving ecological problems associated with the presence and removal of pollu tants. This issue however, was beyond the scope of the Dredging Subcommittee. It was then referred to the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board with a specific request that the Board focus on whether contaminated sediments located in areas with water quality problems and impaired uses should be removed and if so, under what conditions. The Science Advisory Board established a Task Force to address these issues with specific reference to: - provide the IJC with an assessment of the effects of sediment-bound contaminants on biota and water quality; - recommend appropriate remedies for possible application by the parties for remedial activities in the Great Lakes; and - identify gaps in knowledge and suggest appropriate investigations to provide this knowledge.

Alkane C-H Activation by Single-Site Metal Catalysis - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Alkane C-H Activation by Single-Site Metal Catalysis - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Over the past decade, much research effort has been devoted to the design and synthesis of new reagents and catalysts that can influence carbon-hydrogen bond activation, mainly because of the prospect that C−H activation could enable the conversion of cheap and abundant alkanes into valuable functionalized organic compounds. Alkane C-H Activation by Single-Site Metal Catal ysis presents the current state-of-the-art development in the catalytic systems for the catalytic trans-formations of alkanes under homogeneous conditions. Chapter 1 offers a comprehensive summary of the main discoveries realized so far. Chapter 2 reviews the so-called electrophilic activation, initiated by Shulpín in the late 60s, and the base for the Catalytica system. Chapter 3 examines the catalytic borylation of alkanes, discovered by Hartwig, whereas chapter 4 provides an updated vision of the alkane dehydrogenation reaction. Chapter 5 covers the oxygenation of C-H bonds, a field of enormous interest with bioinorganic im-plications, and finally chapter 6 presents the functionalization of alkane C-H bonds by carbene or nitrene insertion. The history of C-H bond activation, and the current research described in this book, highlight the current research and present the reader with an outlook of this field which continues to be explored by an increasingly visionary and enthusiastic group of organic, organometallic, biological and physical chemists.

Developmental Disabilities - Lawrence T. Taft - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The chapters in this volume are drawn from the presentations delivered at a symposium on Developmental Disabilities in the Preschool Child. This sym posium was held under the auspices of The Institute for Pediatric Service of Johnson and Johnson Baby Products. It was co-sponsored by The College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Rutgers Medical School, and The In stitute for the Study of Exceptional Children, Educational Testing Service. The symposium was held in the Fall of 1979 in Chicago, Illinois and the participants, including Ph. D . ''s, Ed. D . ''s, and M. D . ''s, represented the interdisciplinary approach which characterized the meetings. The interdisciplinary set of speakers was matched by an equally diverse audience who represented almost every profes sional group concerned with the needs of disabled children and their families. Because of the successful information exchange that took place, a published volume of the proceedings was determined to be useful for others who were not able to attend. To all those who toil to help developmentally disabled children and their families we dedicate this volume. Michael Lewis Lawrence T. Gaming is unlikely - Hans Jurgen Arlt - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Gaming is unlikely - Hans Jurgen Arlt - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

A concept of game is justified and unfolded that revolves around the lure and threat of the unexpected. The author duo places their theory of ludic action in classical concepts of the game as well as in the current discourse of game studies. The phenomenal multiplicity of games is outlined in historical perspective and structured in a systematic manner. The authors explain the media-technical and communicative preconditions of the computer game boom and reflect on the discussion about escalations of ludic violence. The instrumentalization of games, which is becoming increasingly popular under the heading of gamification, is critically examined. The conspicuous inflation of the game metaphor is brought into connection with ludic connotations in the social structures of modern and digital society. Fabian Arlt, M. A. , studied media management and is doing his doctorate in social and business communication at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin. Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Arlt is a social scientist and publicist, he teaches at the Institute for Theory and Practice of Communication at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

China: Quo Vadis? - Helmut Wagner - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Since 1980, China has undergone an extraordinary economic transformation, rising from a relatively minor geopolitical player to a global economic superpower. However, in recent years, this meteoric growth has slowed, and the nation now faces a range of complex and pressing challenges. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of China’s remarkable ascent, exploring the pivotal reforms that fueled its rise and their far-reaching implications for both China and the West. While reflecting on this transformative journey, the primary focus is on the critical issues China faces today, including its slowing economic growth and escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly with the United States. Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China is responding to these challenges through a series of ambitious economic and political strategies. The book examines these approaches, offering insights into their potential effectiveness and limitations. Looking ahead, it explores possible political and economic scenarios for China in the coming years, shedding light on their implications for Western businesses and China’s own trajectory. This insightful and accessible work is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand China’s economic policies, challenges, and its role in shaping the global economy. Key Topics Covered:China’s journey to becoming a global economic powerhouseXi Jinping’s economic policy strategiesThe critical economic and geopolitical challenges facing ChinaPossible future scenarios and their implications for China and the world

Inborn Errors of Skin, Hair and Connective Tissue - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Inborn Errors of Skin, Hair and Connective Tissue - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Following the pattern of previous years the 11th symposium of the S.S.I.E.M. held in the beautiful sylvan surroundings of Sussex Univ ersity, concentrated on a relatively small section of the field of inborn errors. The subject chosen-Inborn Errors of Skin, Hair and Con nective Tissue, was a highly topical one. Intensive research during the last few years particularly on the structure and disorders of connective tissue has considerably advanced our knowledge on this subject. We believe that the range of diseases covered, and the depth in which they were discussed, made this meeting unique. The proceedings contain much original material and reference information which should make them an invaluable addition to the literature on metabolic disorders. The work involved is multi-disciplinary involving among others physicists, organic chemists, biochemists, clinical chemists, paedia tricians, physicians, geneticists and neurologists. The bringing together of workers of many disciplines to contribute to the particular subject under discussion at our Symposia has always been an important objective of the Society. In this case we were very fortunate in gathering together experts from all the fields mentioned above. In particular we were honoured that Professor A. Dorfman of Chicago could accept our invitation to give the second Milner Lecture. We were also privileged to have some excellent contributions from the research scientists on whom we must rely for our ultimate understanding of the diseases, and rational approach to treatment.
