The empirical progress promises further and even more radical developments in the future, and it is at least often claimed that this kind of research will have tremendeous etfects on and for all of humanity, for example in the areas of food production, transplantation medicine (including stem cell research and xenotransplantation), (therapeutic) genetic manipulation and (cell-line) cloning (of cell lines or tissues), and of biodiversity conservation-strategies. At least in Western, industrialized countries the development of modern sciences led to a steady increase of human health, well-being and quality of life. However, with the move to make the human body itself an object of scientific research­ interests, the respective scientific descriptions resulted in changes in the image that human beings have of themselves. Scientific progress has led to a startling loss of traditional human self-understanding. This development is in contrast to an under­ standing according to which the question what it means to be "human" is treated in the realm of philosophy. And indeed, a closer look reveals that - without denying the value of scientitic progress - science cannot replace the philosophical approach to anthropological questions.

The introduction of consumer-level head-mounted devices (HMDs) has led to a major drop in the application costs of virtual reality (VR), making the technology available for a wide range of users. To understand if VR HMDs can be used for planning and training in the context of manual order picking, this thesis provides the results of a large-scale randomized controlled study in which order picking has been compared between a virtual and a real environment. The results imply that VR HMDs can indeed be used by manufacturers and warehouse operators in a rack planning process if the reduction of searching times or the perceived workload is in focus. Additionally, the findings enable the use of VR HMDs for scientific research on human-centred rack design. Finally, the thesis highlights the usability of VR HMDs for training manual order picking activities.

The broad distribution and extensive utilization enjoyed by the Gmelin Handbook in Eng­ lish-speaking countries has led to a decision to publish the Gmelin Index in the English lan­ guage. This decision was partly based on the fact that since the English language today oc­ cupies a preeminent position in the field of chemistry, a German-speaking user could utilize an English text much more readily than would be the case for an English-speaking user and a German text.

This fourth volume on organoantimony compounds describes pentavalent antimony com­ pounds of the type R and R . The R denotes an organic group bonded by carbon 3SbX2 3Sb=X to the antimony atom. X represents a group, inorganic or organic, which is bonded to the antimony by an atom other than carbon. The X atoms in R may be part of a 3SbX2 ring system. In the case of bidentate X ligands like 02- , S2-, SO~-, CO~-, and others, the compounds are placed with the mononuclear RßbX compounds. 2 I once again thank Dr. Margot Becke and Dr. Ekkehard Fluck for the stimulus that led to this book. The LNCS journal Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems focuses on data management, knowledge discovery, and knowledge processing, which are core and hot topics in computer science. Since the 1990s, the Internet has become the main driving force behind application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability. Current decentralized systems still focus on data and knowledge as their main resource. Feasibility of these systems relies basically on P2P (peer-to-peer) techniques and the support of agent systems with scaling and decentralized control. Synergy between grids, P2P systems, and agent technologies is the key to data- and knowledge-centered systems in large-scale environments. This, the 22nd issue of Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems, contains six revised selected regular papers.
