Cardiac Development - Naranjan S. Dhalla - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

In 1982, as chance would have it again, an opportunity appeared to Jom the Department of Physiology at Kuwait University. P. Braveny spend four years there, teaching, doing some research, recovering former international contacts. Coming back home, he faced the same gloomy, motionless disfavor as before. November 1989 turned P. Bravenfs career upside down. Immediately after the fall ofthe communist regime, he was elected vice-dean and later dean ofthe Faculty of Medicine, promoted full professor in physiology and appointed the head of the Department ofPhysiology. From 1992 to 1998 P. Braveny served as the vice-rector of Masaryk University. His professional career culminated in his presidency of the XIV World Congress of ISHR in Prague. Understandably, in the following years, he become interested (in his tutor's footsteps) in history of physiology and pub- lished two monoghaphs (E. Babak andV Kruta). This CV would be an incomplete one without mentioning his broad interests in natural sciences and in art, particu- larly music and painting. As a tutored amateur he has acquired certain success in the latter. When reviewing P. Bravenfs whole-life work, largely done under adverse cir- cumstances with minimum financial support, his almost two hundred papers, innu- merable essays and four monographs are a commensurate result. In appreciation, he was awarded honorary membership of the Czech Medical Society, Physiological Society and Cardiological Society, Gold Medal of Masaryk University, Ministry of Education Award etc. Bohuslav Ostadal Makoto Nagano Naranjan S.

School Consultation - William P. Erchul - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

School Consultation - William P. Erchul - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Consultation is an indirect model of delivering psychological services. Within this model, a consultant and caregiver (consultee) work together to optimize the functioning of a client in the caregiver''s setting and to increase the caregiver''s capacity to deal with similar situations in the future. In schools, for example, a psychologist may consult with a teacher about a student in the teacher''s classroom. The practice of school consultation has burgeoned since its formal introduction into public education during the 1960s. Today, graduate training programs in various specialties of psychology and education require coursework in consultation, and many professionals in these areas spend some portion of their day engaged in consultation. Consultation can be a powerful tool in delivering psychological services in schools, but only when the consultant possesses a requisite level of skill and sophistication. In preparing this volume, we envi sioned its major purpose as reducing the level of naivete typically experienced by the beginning school consultant. Toward that end, we offer a systematic approach to school consultation that targets much of the information needed for one to consult in a competent manner. The reader should note that our use ofthe somewhat ambiguous term school consultant is intentional and recognizes that consultants working in schools today represent a variety of professional disciplines. The pri mary intended audience for this book, however, is clinical child psy chologists and school psychologists, although psychologists having other specialties are likely to find its content useful.

NanoCellBiology of Secretion - Bhanu P. Jena - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Transesophageal Echocardiography - Norbert P. De Bruijn - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Transesophageal Echocardiography - Norbert P. De Bruijn - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Almost every effort in the care of patients with heart disease begins with some description of disordered physiologic performance or mor phologic anatomy. Since the early work of Edler and Hertz in 1954, echocardiographic methods have grown in importance and reliability for the diagnosis of many cardiac disorders. The placement of a maneuverable transducer on the tip of a modified endoscope is the result of relatively recent technologic advances. The transesophageal approach is now a reality for obtaining new information from ultra-sonic images of a beating human heart. Since images obtained by transesophageal echo cardiography are uniformly of excellent quality, it extends the diagnostic potential of echocardiography to the patient who is difficult to image from the conventional chest wall approach. More importantly, transesophageal echocardiography provides a means to acquire useful information in new situations, such as the operating room. When this imaging modality is brought to patients undergoing surgical procedures, surgeons and anesthesiologists have a ready means for assessing cardiac performance during anesthesia, directing various surgical approaches and immediately evaluating the results of surgical repair. Transesophageal echocardiographic techniques represent a major vi vii advance in the care of patients with cardiovascular disease. Never before has there been a means to acquire such important information about the heart during an operative intervention. New questions are being asked and new answers are at hand.

Feedback Control Theory for Engineers - P. Atkinson - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Feedback Control Theory for Engineers - P. Atkinson - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Textbooks in the field of control engineering have, in the main, been written for electrical engineers and the standard of the mathematics used has been relatively high. The purpose of this work is to provide a course of study in elementary control theory which is self-contained and suitable for students of all branches of engineering and of applied physics. The book assumes that the student has a knowledge of mathematics of A-level or 0-2 level standard only. All other necessary pure and applied mathematics is covered for reference purposes in chapters 2-6. As a students'' textbook it contains many fully worked numerical examples and sets of examples are provided at the end of all chapters except the first. The answers to these examples are given at the end of the book. The book covers the majority of the control theory likely to be encountered on H. N. C. , H. N. D. and degree courses in electrical, mechanical, chemical and production engineering and in applied physics. It will also provide a primer in specialist courses in instru mentation and control engineering at undergraduate and post graduate level. Furthermore, it covers much of the control theory encountered in the graduateship examinations of the professional institutions, for example I. E. E. Part III (Advanced Electrical Engineer ing and Instrumentation and Control), I. E. R. E. Part 5 (Control Engineering) and the new c. E. I. Part 2 (Mechanics of Machines and Systems and Control Engineering).

Business Analysis Using Regression - Richard P. Waterman - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Business Analysis Using Regression - Richard P. Waterman - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Preface Statistics is seldom the most eagerly anticipated course of a business student. It typically has the reputation ofbeing aboring, complicated, and confusing mix of mathematical formulas and computers. Our goal in writing this casebook and the companion volume (Basic Business Statistics) was to change that impression by showing how statistics gives insights and answers interesting business questions. Rather than dwell on underlying formulas, we show how to use statistics to answer questions. Each case study begins with a business question and concludes with an answer. Formulas appear only as needed to address the questions, and we focus on the insights into the problem provided by the mathematics. The mathematics serves a purpose. The material is organized into 12 "classes" of related case studies that develop a single, key idea of statistics. The analysis of data using statistics is seldom very straightforward, and each analysis has many nuances. Part ofthe appeal ofstatistics is this richness, this blending of substantive theories and mathematics. For a newcomer, however, this blend is too rich and they are easily overwhelmed and unable to sort out the important ideas from nuances. Although later cases in these notes suggest this complexity, we do not begin that way. Each class has one main idea, something big like standard error. We begin a class by discussing an application chosen to motivate this key concept, and introduce the necessary terminology.

Mammal Phylogeny - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

The roots of this book and its sister volume, Mammal Phylogeny: Placentals, go back to discussions and plans, shelved for a while, between F. S. Szalay and W. P. Luckett during the international and multidisciplinary symposium on rodent evolution sponsored by NATO, July 2-6, 1984, in Paris. That conference, orga nized by W. P. Luckett and J. -L. Hartenberger, the proceedings of which were published in 1985, proved an inspiring experience to all of the participants, as this was repeatedly expressed both during and after the meetings. In addition to issues relating to rodents, general theoretical topics pertaining to the evolutionary biol ogy and systematics of other groups of mammals regularly surfaced during the presentations and discussions. M. J. Novacek, who was also a participant in the rodent symposium, shared with Luckett and Szalay the enthusiasm acquired there, and he also expressed strong interest for a meeting on mammal evolution with a general focus similar to that of the rodent gathering. In 1988, Szalay and Luckett, after having planned in detail a program, direc tion, and core list of participants, were awarded a $30,000 grant by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation through the Research Foundation of the City University of New York. The grant was contingent upon obtaining additional funds sufficient to assure that the symposium would be held. Raising the remaining funds proved to be a problem.

Atlas of Electroencephalography in Sleep Medicine - Hrayr P. Attarian - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Atlas of Electroencephalography in Sleep Medicine - Hrayr P. Attarian - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Sleep Medicine is a field that attracts physicians from a variety of clinical backgrounds. As a result, the majority of sleep specialists who interpret sleep studies (PSG) do not have specialized training in neurophysiology and electroencephalography (EEG) interpretation. Given this and the fact that PSGs usually are run at a third of the speed of EEGs and that they usually have a limited array of electrodes, waveforms frequently appear different on the PSGs compared to the EEGs. This can lead to challenges interpreting certain unusual looking activity that may or may not be pathological. This Atlas of Electroencephalograpy in Sleep Medicine is extensively illustrated and provides an array of examples of normal waveforms commonly seen on PSG, in addition to normal variants, epileptiform and non-epileptiform abnormalities and common artifacts. This resource is divided into five main sections with a range of topics and chapters per section. The sections cover Normal Sleep Stages; Normal Variants; Epileptiform Abnormalities; Non-epileptiform Abnormalities; and Artifacts. Each example includes a brief description of each EEG together with its clinical significance, if any. Setting the book apart from others in the field is the following feature: Each EEG discussed consists of three views of the same page -- one at a full EEG montage with 30mm/sec paper speed, the same montage at 10mm/sec (PSG speed) and a third showing the same thing at 10 mm/sec, but with the abbreviated PSG montage. Unique and the first resource of its kind in sleep medicine, the Atlas of Electroencephalograpy in Sleep Medicine will greatly assist those physicians and sleep specialists who read PSGs to identify common and unusual waveforms on EEG as they may appear during a sleep study and serve as a reference for them in that capacity.
