Nico Muhly: Doublespeak - Chamber Ensemble

The sheet music for Nico Muhly 's Doublespeak , arranged for Chamber Ensemble, and composed for the orchestral sextet 'eighth blackbird'. The piece is arranged for Flute (Soprano Recorder), Clarinet in B flat, Percussion (Castanets, Tenor Drum, Pedal Bass Drum), Glockenspiel, Piano, Violin and Cello. It works for 2-6 players and this item includes the full score as well as the parts. Doublespeak  had its debut at the Edlis Neeson Theatre in Chicago, performed by the new musical six-piece 'eighth blackbird'. The piece is a slow and repetitive one, punctuated by moments of stark beauty. It is, according to Muhly , something of a tribute to the great Philip Glass, the forefather of minimalist classical music. It takes implicit inspiration from his entire oeuvre but also explicitly incorporates portions of his most famous and valued works, interweaving them inside a new composition that captures what 'eighth blackbird' do best.  The Doublespeak  sheet music would be ideal for Chamber Ensembles looking to perform or practise minimalist music drawn from the 1960s and 1970s. If you love Philip Glass or Nico Muhly , or both, this composition is a real treat.

A new Christmas carol composed by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman with text by children's author Michael Morpurgo, We Were There is arranged for SSA Chorus and Piano. The work was commissioned by Liverpool Philharmonic for their 175th anniversary, and first performed by the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth on the 18th of December 2014. Portman' s work gained a rapturous reception, with critics and audiences praising its pretty melodies and the text by the master of fiction Michael Morpurgo. This Christmas carol makes a fantastically fresh antidote to the tired old favourites, and it will definitely be a hit with audiences, who will love the new sound and the divine melodies. It'll certainly be a hit at any Christmas concert. In the September 2015 issue of Organists' Review, David Lindley wrote that We Were There  "would make an agreeable piece for a school carol service, and should be well within the abilities of a reasonably competent group." An equally good review from the September 2015 issue of Sunday by Sunday from the Royal School of Church Music states that "choirs will enjoy this attractive and effective piece."

For a piece with such a strong electronic component, 'It Goes Without Saying' is surprisingly organic. While the electronics include chillier, metallic noises—samples ranging from a kitchen whisk to a unique set of tiny bells—most prominent are the warm, woody sounds of a harmonium and of clicking clarinet-keys, sounds that share a certain sonic DNA with the live components of the performance.The piece also develops according to organic principles. Over the initial drone of the harmonium, the rhythm track and the clarinets build the material of the piece up from small, replicating cells into a lively and elaborate texture. The minutely wrought surface is stretched over the simplest possible formal contour, the drone undergirding the piece progressing from C to F and back again. When the slowly building dissonance of the underlying harmonium chord finally reaches its tipping point, the resolution corresponds to a dramatic timbral shock: a shocking burst of industrial noise, dominating rather than complementing its acoustic surroundings. Finally, the machine noises die away and the harmonies return home, the texture warms once again—now leavened by the gentle sound of the celesta. – Program Notes © 2007 Daniel Johnson Performance Notes: The clarinet should be placed in the center of the stage. If amplification is used (which is not necessary but can help solve certain balance issues), it is recommended that there be one microphone traditionally placed, and another close to the side of the instrument, gently amplifying the natural sound of the keys clicking.

Nico Muhly: Duet No.1 - Chorale Pointing Downwards

Duet No.1: Chorale Pointing Downwards is a work by contemporary composer Nico Muhly for Viola and Cello. The piece received its premiere at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York in February 2004. Muhly  himself writes of the work that it's the first in a series of short string pieces that serve simultaneous purposes as harmonic and technical studies for both composer and performers. Duet No.1  is constructed around a cycle of fourteen chords repeated almost without cessation. This drone-like cycle is subject to a few rhythmic alterations, as well as two interruptions, keeping things dynamic and exciting. The middle of the piece becomes, in Muhly 's words, "a sort of fervent perpetual-motion perseverance", in an attempt to combine harmonic beauty with what sounds like a musical exercise.
