Death Rights - Deanna P. Koretsky - Bog - State University of New York Press - Plusbog.dk

Death Rights - Deanna P. Koretsky - Bog - State University of New York Press - Plusbog.dk

Analyzes how literary representations of suicide have reinforced antiblackness in the modern world. Death Rights presents an antiracist critique of British romanticism by deconstructing one of its organizing tropes-the suicidal creative "genius." Putting texts by Olaudah Equiano, Mary Shelley, John Keats, and others into critical conversation with African American literature, black studies, and feminist theory, Deanna P. Koretsky argues that romanticism is part and parcel of the legal and philosophical discourses underwriting liberal modernity''s antiblack foundations. Read in this context, the trope of romantic suicide serves a distinct political function, indexing the limits of liberal subjectivity and (re)inscribing the rights and freedoms promised by liberalism as the exclusive province of white men. The first book-length study of suicide in British romanticism, Death Rights also points to the enduring legacy of romantic ideals in the academy and contemporary culture more broadly. Koretsky challenges scholars working in historically Eurocentric fields to rethink their identification with epistemes rooted in antiblackness. And, through discussions of recent cultural touchstones such as Kurt Cobain''s resurgence in hip-hop and Victor LaValle''s comic book sequel to Frankenstein , Koretsky provides all readers with a trenchant analysis of how eighteenth-century ideas about suicide continue to routinize antiblackness in the modern world. Housing and Community Development in New York City - - Bog - State University of New York Press - Plusbog.dk

Provides a comprehensive, up-to-date description and analysis of the housing and neighborhood problems facing residents of the nation''s largest city, and the policies that have been developed to solve these problems. Leading housing scholars and practitioners provide a comprehensive, up-to-date description and analysis of housing and community development policy as they examine one of America''s largest and most important cities. Throughout the nation''s history, New York City has been at the forefront of housing policy creativity and innovation. As the federal government''s role in social policy continues to shrink and authority devolves to local governments, the focus in urban policy turns to America''s cities. New York City''s experience provides useful lessons for other municipalities on both the opportunities and pitfalls for government intervention in the housing market. Housing and Community Development in New York City comprehensively explores a full range of policy issues including the analysis of current housing problems and demographics; examination of federally supported housing assistance programs such as public housing and Section 8; scrutiny of the City''s response to homelessness and the abandonment of private sector housing; and a look at New York''s innovative program to rebuild neighborhoods with public-private partnerships.
