Ben Webster: Dig Ben

More than 35 years after his death Ben Webster's music remains fresh, contemporary and original; his distinctive sound still enchants and engages at each listening. The American tenor saxophonist came to Europe in 1964, at the relatively late age of 55, and never returned to the States. Webster had previously put off coming to Europe because of his intense fear of flying but when he finally arrived he was soon crowned King of Tenors by the thousands of fans who gave him their love and respect. Although he longed for his musical roots in the US he never went back; not only because of his fear of flying - he liked being in Europe. This 8CD box set has more than 10 hours of Ben Webster's music including previously unreleased tracks. The sessions were recorded mainly between 1964 and 1973 in Europe, mostly in Scandinavia, and include live recordings from festivals, clubs and radio and television broadcasts. They feature Webster at Copenhagen's famous Montmartre club and other Danish locations as well as sessions from his renowned month-long residency at London's Ronnie Scott's (his first job in Europe). Completing the set are recordings from Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Germany and several tracks recorded before he left New York. Webster is heard in various settings - from trios to big bands - in the company of contemporaries including Teddy Wilson, Clark Terry, Buck Clayton and Dexter Gordon. The booklet is illustrated with some great photos of Webster and gives a very personal insight from his closest friends and associates into his life and loves, his music and the colourful anecdotes that arose everywhere this remarkable musician went.

Hank Jones In Copenhagen: Live At Jazzhus Slukefter 1983

Hank Jones In Copenhagen: Live At Jazzhus Slukefter 1983

The American pianist Hank Jones could, spanning his 65 year career, always be counted on for a joyful presence on the jazz scene, playing sparkling piano solos that uplifted every group that was wise enough to hire him. This set of previously unreleased music from June 6, 1983 puts the spotlight of one of the most consistent geniuses in jazz history. In the 1970s and 1980s, Jazzhus Slukefter in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, was the site for a large number of live recordings release by Storyville. Hank Jones brought Danish bassist Mads Vinding with him, a bassist with a large sound, the ability to take very original solos, and a love for straight ahead jazz. The third name on the stage was drummer Shelly Mane, whose career was as prolific as Jones’, and who added color and life to every group. This 1983 concert consists of nine jazz standards. Jones takes the lion’s share of the solo spots, changing his style between that of a classical bebop pianist and other times swinging elegantly like Teddy Wilson. The masterful trio comes up with creative variations and give all the songs on the release rewardingly fresh treatments. Hank Jones (1918-2010) was born in Mississippi and was an early inspiration for his two younger brothers, both of whom would become all-time greats: cornetist Thad Jones and drummer Elvin Jones. He immediately became part of the jazz major leagues once he relocated to New York where he embraced the bebop of Bud Powell without abandoning his roots in swing. Tasteful and lightly swinging, Hank Jones would always be thought of as a class act. His non-stop activity with countless bands, orchestras and musicians only ended when ageless Hank Jones passed away in 2010. Musically, he never declined. The result of the 1983 Slukefter session is an enjoyable hour of music that, after sitting unheard for over 30 years, sounds as fresh as if it were recorded yesterday.

Clara Vuust: Before You Walk Away

Clara Vuust: Before You Walk Away

The Danish jazz singer Clara Vuust is releasing her third studio album "Before You Walk Away" - a jazz album that combines a Nordic, lyrical vocal tradition with the Mediterranean warmth in the musical arrangements by composer and arranger Francesco Calì. The album reflects Vuust's love for the beautiful melodies in  "The great American Songbook", but at the same time it carries a European tone that with the distinctive sound of the accordion brings to mind Italian summer nights and French chanson.  The European tone is set by British trumpet player Gerard Presencer and Italian pianist and accordionist Francesco Calì,  and through the almost chamber music like arrangements runs a somewhat melancholic vein that together with Clara Vuust's warm and alluring voice create a romantic and thoughtful atmosphere. The songs on "Before You Walk Away" are inspired by Vuust’s fondness for the American Jazz standard repertoire, but also by her  love for Italian evergreens and French Jazz by the composer Michel Legrand among others. Her voice and interpretations draw on inspiration from great singers such as Irene Kral, the Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund and Barbra Streisand. The title of the album  "Before You Walk Away" is a line from the song "I Wish You Love". About the choice of title Clara says: “All the songs on this album are in some way or another based on the theme of saying goodbye and parting with the ones you love. The title "Before you walk away" is a reflection upon that moment where we go our separate ways – the bittersweet sorrow, but also the love, that lies in the departure..." Clara Vuust was born in the outskirts of Aarhus – the second biggest town in Denmark. Her childhood was all about children's choir and classical piano until, at the age of 11, she discovered jazz music. For her eleventh birthday she got a Real Book filled with jazz standards and a new world opened: Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley and Ella Fitzgerald were put on repeat on the stereo. Clara Vuust grew up in a family where music was part of everyday life. Her brother is the recognized jazz-saxophone player Christian Vuust and her cousin is double-bass player and music/brain researcher Peter Vuust. Clara Vuust has her musical education as a singer from RMC – the Rhythmic Music Conservatory – in Copenhagen.

Thomas Fonnesbæk Trio: Sharing

Thomas Fonnesbæk Trio: Sharing

Release November 09, 2018.   Thomas Fonnesbæk and Justin Kauflin are ready to follow up on the critically acclaimed album Synethesia from 2017. This time they are joined by Billy Williams on drums, making this a trio record.   The album, entitled Sharing, was recorded during November 2017 in Gothenburg, Sweden. It consists of 10 tracks, with the main part composed by Fonnesbæk, alongside one improvisation and a rendition of the classic track Inception, written by McCoy Tyner. On Sharing the trio exemplifies the fact that jazz has never been a more international art form than it is today, and that new generations continue to set their own fascinating imprint on the music.   Opening track Point Of No Return starts with a ride-cymbal that sets a kind of upbeat but still very spacious sound, and within the first minute the piano and bass kicks in giving the intro a form that slowly transcends into the theme of the song. First Dance is as the title suggest, a percussion-heavy song that invites the listener to dance to the rhythms. Title-track Sharing is a beautiful ballad that really displays the immense talents of the trio, with the piano in a leading role and almost playful in the way it explores the melody and chords within the song. Tokyo Tower is one of the more upbeat songs, shapeshifting between a kind of metric funk and more traditional jazz within the blink of an eye. The album closes on a high beat, with the trio’s rendition of Inception. Presented here in a very high tempo, the trio once again displays what they are capable of, this time playing fast and precise, without ever sounding forced.   Danish bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk is a fascinating musician who exudes technical brilliance and a superior sense of rhythm, as well as a melodic and harmonic sensitivity reminiscent of Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen that never overshadows his own unique style.   Justin Kauflin is one of the great piano talents of recent times. Renowned trumpetist Clark Terry and Quincy Jones has both taken the young prodigy under their wings, playing a crucial part in his success. The maturity he displays and focus with which he plays is exceptional.   Billy Williams is the childhood friend of Kauflin and has worked professionally with a long list of great jazz musicians such as Christian McBride, Larry Willis, Steve Wilson, Benny Golson and Ellis Marsalis Kauflin and Fonnesbæk met for the first time when they were put together for a show at Montmartre in Copenhagen.   Kauflin was so impressed with Fonnesbæk, that he invited him to go on tour with him in Europe and Asia. Both Justin Kauflin and Thomas Fonnesbæk perceive music as colour, a form of synesthesia where one sense stimulates another. It is an aptitude that permeates this record and boosts the level of interplay to new heights. As a result, almost everything is possible and the music becomes boundless when Kauflin, Fonnesbæk and Billy Williams let themselves go. In all of this, Williams plays a major role. His style, at once powerful and sensitive, binds the music together while giving it the groove to constantly propel the group forward.   Great art gets us to forget daily life for a moment. It makes us aware of our fe
