Lessons from Ground Zero - Jay Perkins - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

It ranked among journalism''s finest hours. That is what was heard in the weeks following September 11, 2001. They made mistakes, of course, but in covering one of the biggest disasters ever to hit the United States, journalists used their training, their experience, their understanding, and their sensitivity to provide coverage that helped bring understanding and a sense of calm to the chaos. Their performance did not end with reporting the immediate impact of the catastrophe. They continued to analyze what happened, the impact to property and human lives, the impact on government and foreign relations. Lessons from Ground Zero ''s examines journalism''s efforts to cover a crisis, while analyzing journalism itself. Many lessons were evident to journalists as they sought to cope with the challenges of covering 9/11. The long-term question, however, is whether the answers they found served as catalysts for better journalism in the future, or whether they have been forgotten, put into the closet of old memories with no noticeable long-term impact. This book analyzes journalists'' response to 9/11 through scholarly research and interviews with many of the journalists who covered 9/11. Sometimes they do not agree, but all are thoughtful and each adds to understanding. Public opinion polls show clearly that citizens appreciated and responded to media coverage. Given that this occurred in a time frame in which public approval of American journalism had declined, it is reasonable to ask what the media did that was different from their normal practices. This book provides some of the answers.

Lean Sustainability - Dennis Averill - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Lean Sustainability - Dennis Averill - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance defines safety as the maintenance of peace of mind. Without peace of mind, or the serenity brought about by a safe working environment, employees will be unwilling and even unable to focus their energies on production improvement. Thus, it can be said that all improvement begins with safety. Winner of a 2013 Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award! A how-to manual on the proper integration of safety and environmental sustainability with Lean implementations, Lean Sustainability: Creating Safe, Enduring, and Profitable Operations provides a proven recipe for achieving safety and sustainability excellence. This book is the result of the author’s two decades of experience implementing Lean; Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE); and sustainability processes in the chemical, food, and consumer products industries. It unveils valuable lessons learned and little-known tips for eliminating waste and increasing process efficiency—while reducing safety incidents and the overall impact on the environment. The text illustrates how to use the SHE Pillar as a gateway to continuous improvement, regardless of the improvement methodology you use. Bolstered with proven methodologies and real-world advice, it introduces novel approaches for achieving safety and sustainability excellence, including: - Autonomous Safety— supplying employees with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to work safely - Triple Zero— the achievement of zero accidents, zero environmental incidents, and zero losses - Green Value Stream Mapping— the application of Value Stream Mapping to environmental and sustainability issues Although there are many books on Lean, sustainability, and SHE, few explain how to integrate these dynamic tools. Walking you through this process, this book supplies the tools to create a synergy that will boost efficiencies across all segments of your business. Follow its advice and you’ll be on your way to making your organization and employees Lean, green, and serene.

Things that are good for the planet are also good for business. Numerous studies from the likes of the Economist Intelligence Unit, Harvard, MIT Sloan, and others indicate that organizations that commit to goals of zero waste, zero harmful emissions, and zero use of nonrenewable resources clearly outperform their competition. Like lean thinking, greening your business is not just a ‘nice to have’; at least not anymore. It is now a key economic driver for many forward looking firms. This book is packed with case studies and examples that illustrate how leading firms use lean and green as simultaneous sources of inspiration in various sectors of industry - from automotive and retail to textile and brewing. Take Toyota as an example, the holy grail of economic efficiency for decades. Introducing Game Theory and its Applications - Elliott Mendelson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Introducing Game Theory and its Applications - Elliott Mendelson - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The mathematical study of games is an intriguing endeavor with implications and applications that reach far beyond tic-tac-toe, chess, and poker to economics, business, and even biology and politics. Most texts on the subject, however, are written at the graduate level for those with strong mathematics, economics, or business backgrounds. In a clear and refreshing departure from this trend, Introducing Game Theory and its Applications presents an easy-to-read introduction to the basic ideas and techniques of game theory. After a brief introduction, the author begins with a chapter devoted to combinatorial games--a topic neglected or treated minimally in most other texts. The focus then shifts to two-person zero-sum games and their solution. Here the author presents the simplex method, based on linear programming, for solving these games and develops within his presentation the required background in linear programming. The final chapter presents some of the fundamental ideas and tools of non-zero-sum games and games with more than two players, including an introduction to cooperative game theory. This book will not only satisfy the curiosity of those whose interest in the subject was piqued by the 1994 Nobel Prize awarded to Harsanyi, Nash, and Selten. It also prepares its readers for more advanced study of game theory''s applications in economics, business, and the physical, biological, and social sciences.

P-M Analysis - Shirose Kunio - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

P-M Analysis - Shirose Kunio - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

In this large-format implementation manual, TPM experts explain P-M Analysis. (A methodology that makes zero losses a reality in your TPM program.) P-M Analysis is designed to help your TPM teams analyze and eliminate chronic problems that have been neglected or unresolved in the past. Chronic quality defects and other chronic losses are hard to eradicate, because they typically have multiple, interrelated causes that vary with every occurrence. Common improvement strategies, like cause-and-effect analysis, are usually ineffective in dealing with such complex problems. P-M Analysis was specially developed to overcome the weaknesses of traditional methods. It offers a rigorous 8-step method for ensuring that all possible factors are identified and investigated. Through P-M Analysis, teams really get in touch with their equipment. Its unique skill-building process improves technological know-how while delivering solutions to persistent problems. The first four steps of this rigorous 8-step program help teams isolate and understand the root causes of defects and failures within main equipment mechanisms and peripheral systems. The final four steps provide a systematic approach for effectively controlling those causes. A critical concept in P-M Analysis is physical analysis -- a way of thinking about how defects and failures are generated that forces us to look at the physical principles involved and to quantify the changes in the relationship between the equipment mechanisms and product parts involved. When a proper physical analysis is carried out, teams are far less likely to overlook important factors or to waste time pursuing unrelated ones. Although not a cure-all, P-M Analysis has reduced chronic losses to zero and raised technological expertise in many manufacturing environments. This illustrated implementation manual provides a thorough step-by-step procedure for implementing P-M Analysis, along with practice exercises and graded examples. It is an unparalleled resource for anyone with a basic knowledge of TPM who is ready to fine-tune their loss-reduction activities. Here, finally, is a root-cause analysis method that will help teams achieve the ultimate goal of zero losses.

Leading High-Reliability Organizations in Healthcare - Richard Morrow - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Institute of Medicine, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, The Joint Commission, and other regulatory and accrediting bodies all agree that hospitals must be transformed into places where each patient receives quality care, every single time. In other words, zero defects. Helping to ensure quality at every level, high-reliability methods offer healthcare leaders the tools they need to achieve this noble goal. Leading High-Reliability Organizations in Healthcare details the attributes and practices that help high-reliability organizations (HROs) excel in the service they provide to their customers. Explaining what it takes to achieve high reliability in healthcare settings, it defines reliability as much more than just being safe, it describes how to measure reliability and paves the way to higher reliability. The book presents proven tools, concepts, and skills that leading healthcare organizations are using to improve safety and quality, including mistake proofing, Lean Six Sigma, and reliability engineering. It details the roles and responsibilities of the two key organizational components involved in achieving high reliability: leadership and the reliability "engineers" who apply reliability methods both technically and socially throughout the healthcare value stream. Rick Morrow, executive in HROs and now System Director of Quality, Safety, and Process Improvement at CHRISTUS Health, one of the largest non-profit healthcare systems, identifies the necessary infrastructure, methods, and analytics required to achieve and sustain higher reliability. He also suggests applications of high reliability concepts that have proven to work well in healthcare settings. The book includes numerous case studies that illustrate success stories of healthcare organizations achieving higher reliability, some achieving zero defects for years. It also contains case studies that examine examples of failures, so you can avoid making the same mistakes.

School Violence - Dewey G. Cornell - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

School Violence - Dewey G. Cornell - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Illustrated with numerous case studies–many drawn from the author’s work as a forensic psychologist–this book identifies 19 myths and misconceptions about youth violence, from ordinary bullying to rampage shootings. It covers controversial topics such as gun control and the effects of entertainment violence on children. The author demonstrates how fear of school violence has resulted in misguided, counterproductive educational policies and practices ranging from boot camps to zero tolerance. He reviews evidence from hundreds of controlled studies showing that school-based school violence prevention programs and mental health services, which are largely effective, are often overlooked in favor of politically popular yet ineffective programs such as school uniforms, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, and Scared Straight. He concludes by reviewing some of his own research on student threat assessment as a more flexible and less punitive alternative to zero tolerance, and presents a wide ranging series of recommendations for improving and expanding the use of school-based violence prevention programs and mental health services for troubled students. Key features include the following: Contrarian Approach– This book identifies and refutes 19 basic misconceptions about trends in youth violence and school safety, and shows how the fear of school violence has been exaggerated through inaccurate statistics, erroneous conclusions about youth violence, and over-emphasis on atypical, sensational cases. Readability– The book translates scientific, evidence-based research into language that educators, parents, law enforcement officers, and policymakers can readily understand and shows what can be done to improve things. Expertise –Dewey Cornell is a forensic psychologist and Professor of Education at the University of Virginia, where he holds an endowed chair in Education. He is Director of the UVA Youth Violence Project and is a faculty associate of the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy. The author of more than 100 publications in psychology and education, he frequently testifies in criminal proceedings and at legislative hearings involving violence prevention efforts. This book is appropriate for courses or seminars dealing wholly or partly with school violence and school safety. It is also an indispensable volume for school administrators and safety officers; local, state, and national policymakers; involved parents; and academic libraries serving these groups.
