Cultural Politics in Harry Potter - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Cultural Politics in Harry Potter: Life, Death and the Politics of Fear is the first book-length analysis of topics, such as death, fear and biopolitics in J.K. Rowling’s work from controversial and interdisciplinary perspectives. This collection brings together recent theoretical and applied cultural studies and focuses on three key areas of inquiry: (1) wizarding biopolitics and intersected discourses; (2) anxiety, death, resilience and trauma; and (3) the politics of fear and postmodern transformations. As such, this book: - provides a comprehensive overview of national and gender discourses, as well as the transiting bodies in-between, in relation to the Harry Potter books series and related multimedia franchise; - situates the transformative power of death within the fandom, transmedia and film depictions of the Potterverse and critically deconstructs the processes of subjectivation and legitimation of death and fear; - examines the strategies and mechanisms through which cultural and political processes are managed, as well as reminding us how fiction and reality intersect at junctions, such as terrorism, homonationalism, materialism, capitalism, posthumanism and technology. Exploring precisely what is cultural about wizarding politics, and what is political about culture, this book is key reading for students of contemporary literature, media and culture, as well as anyone with an interest in the fictional universe and wizarding world of Harry Potter.

Can Efficiency and Community Service Be Symbiotic? - Sharyn Potter - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Can Efficiency and Community Service Be Symbiotic? - Sharyn Potter - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

In recent years researchers have asserted that the once-salient distinctions between not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals are quickly eroding. These converging outcomes represent a striking departure from past differences. Historically, not-for-profit hospitals were larger and treated a higher proportion of seriously ill patients than for-profit hospitals. Not-for-profit hospitals also had larger medical staffs and offered greater opportunities for medical training. Researchers have vigorously debated the implications of the fading distinction between for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals. As these researchers note, numerous communities support not-for-profit hospitals with tax-payer dollars, income and property-tax exclusions and tax-free financing and contributions. Many are concerend that not-for-profit hospitals will jettison community service in an attempt to reduce operating costs. Despite such important implications this literature is full of philosophical discussions, typically employing limited empirical data, limited time frames and limited consideration of the hospital environment. This limited consideration of environmental factors (i.e. policy, supply and demand) leaves an important question unanswered: How do environmental factors combine to produce the narrowing distinction between not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals? Potter''s book examines the claims of a narrowing distinction between not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals by analyzing short-term general hospital outcomes in the 48 contiguous states over a fifteen-year period in conjunction with various environmental factors. In particular, this book analyzes the claims of a declining distinction between hospital types by focusing on both hospital efficiency and community service outcomes. It examines whether the efficiency and community service outcomes of not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals have converged, finding that hospital type was most significant in explaining the variance in hospital outcomes in the early 1980s than in the mid-1980s and early 1990s. The story is quite different when we examine community-service outcomes. In particular, Potter does not find evidence that hospitals are reducing their provision of community care in an effort to reduce expenses.

This title was first published in 2003. Few historians would deny that Louis XIV''s France dominated the political, cultural and military landscape of late seventeenth century Europe. Yet, the financial foundations on which French hegemony were based remain open to question. Traditionally the regime has been viewed as the archetypal centralizing monarchy in which warfare was the main motor driving reform. Yet recent research has pointed to a more subtle interpretation in which power was negotiated and interests balanced between the crown and members of the elite. Corps and Clienteles offers a unique approach to this debate by focusing on the intersection between institutions and personal relationships in the financial strategies surrounding Louis XIV''s final two wars. It argues that, in appealing to the elite for financial support to wage war, Louis in return stabilised many of the structures on which the elite stood, entrenched elements of privilege throughout the political landscape, and devolved power to provincial institutions. Especially with the participation of privileged corps as financial intermediaries, the politics of war finance in the last twenty five years of Louis'' reign profoundly influenced the direction in which absolutism developed through the remainder of the Old Regime. The book situates the period 1688 to 1715 as a crucial stage in the development of absolutism; tying the choices available to Louis XIV with the structures and institutions that he inherited from his predecessors, while setting his approach apart. By also measuring the impact of financial negotiations between crown and corps on the later state, it is argued that absolutism under Louis was neither ossified nor in crisis, as the latter half of his reign is often described, but rather dynamic and flexible as it sought to meet the financial costs of warfare.
