Against Sacrifice - Henry P Wynn - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

This book is directed at the sort of raw utilitarian approach to making hard choices in public life which uses in one form or another the idea of the cash value of a human life. This arises with the use of so-called QALYs in Health Economics and spending caps in Health and Safety at work. These are often forced choices, forced by ethical decisions taken at the centre but then outsourced to the harsh frontiers of ethics. They go hand-in-hand with pernicious attitudes which blame the victims or thinks of them simply as collateral damage. The ethics of war should not be used in peacetime, with loaded words like “proportionality”. The response should be to value life itself and the human qualities of empathy and imagination, requiring us to listen to the narratives of victims. The best option is to remove the hard choices wherever they occur but if that is impossible give generous and swift compensation. The central message is that it cannot be part of the “public good” to sacrifice someone for the public good. That happens with vaccination, but in the long run is not acceptable. We need safer vaccines, better intensive care and so on. These ideas can be captured in the terms “duty of care” and “deliberative democracy”. Every regulator and agency which has power over human life should have duty of care written into its constitution and we need new forms of democracy to debate the issues, particularly within communities. The essay draws on the community-based and experimental ideas of the great American Pragmatist, John Dewey.

The Fire Still Burns - Stuart P Scott - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Fire Still Burns - Stuart P Scott - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Fire Still Burns explores a variety of themes relating to ministry particularly in the United Reformed Church but with broader application across the Reformed tradition. Rooted in personal experience, it offers seven separate but related personal, historical and theological reflections, with description, analysis and discussion, seeking to offer an honest and realistic appraisal of the current situation but also encouragement and hope on the basis of faith and experience. Each reflection concludes with questions for individual further reflection or discussion in groups and there are occasional interludes of poetry and two brief discussions of pieces of art. There are concluding thoughts before the pandemic and a postscript looking beyond it. There is also an extensive bibliography and list of online resources. The reflections began on sabbatical leave in Westminster College, Cambridge, a Resource Centre for Learning of the United Reformed Church, in the Michaelmas term October - December 2019. They have been edited, developed and extended to include detailed discussion on ministry through the Covid-19 pandemic. They are now offered exploring where the call of God is now on the continuing journey of the Christian Church through times of challenge and opportunity. The objectives are: • Reflection on more than 35 years of personal experience of ministry in the United Reformed Church • Exploration more broadly of the Ministry of the Word and Sacraments in the United Reformed Church, with reference to theologians, Reports to General Assembly, and recent conversations • Discussion of response to current issues including diminishing resources and numerical decline, new opportunities and insights including pioneer ministry, and the Covid-19 pandemic

Paul Kossoff: All Right Now - J. P. James - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Paul Kossoff: All Right Now - J. P. James - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Affectionately known as ‘Koss’, Paul Kossoff’s playing touched people. It still does today, more than forty years after his sad and untimely death at the age of twenty-five. This authorised biography pays fitting tribute to a much-loved and widely admired musician whose influence and inspiration is still very evident. It’s all here: Kossoff’s musical childhood, his formative years with Black Cat Bones, forming Free at seventeen, that group’s dizzying success, breakup, reforming and dissolution, the solo years, Back Street Crawler – the sessions, the tours and big concerts, the triumphs, the tragedies and the heartbreak – J.P. James takes the reader right there. Over four distinct sections, Kossoff’s many guitars and the equipment he used to make them sing are fully documented; a brand-new detailed analysis of Kossoff’s distinctive playing style and technique is presented for the first time; a broad overview of Kossoff’s creative life draws on the voices of family, friends and fellow musicians; and finally, Kossoff’s musical influences, approach to playing and his wider musical interests, hopes and dreams are explored – all drawn from his own words. Cramming so much into his short years, Paul Kossoff left a rich musical legacy, and he is indeed All Right Now. Thoroughly researched and sensitively written, given often in Kossoff’s own words and packed with anecdotes from those who were there, musicians and fans alike will enjoy this authoritative and comprehensive biography.

Under the Enemy Sky - Peter D. Webb - Bog - Troubador Publishing - Plusbog.dk

My granddaughter was studying recent history at school, a year or two back and the course of her studies were embracing the events of the Second World War; Classroom activities included an exhibition of War time photos and relics, that might be gathered together and I was incumbent on relatives etc, familiar with the era, to see what they might have in the loft! I was able to contribute a Tin hat (steel helmet in modern day parlance) and a gas mask, both inherited from my Father who was a stalwart member of the A. R. P at that time. More about the A. R. P later. I was also asked to provide a brief account of my re-collections of the period, which, no doubt, would be included in any essays on the subject to complete her studies. I later realised that I was 5 years of age in 1939 and 11 years when the conflict finally ended in 1945, there was also the ''benefit'' of living in Croydon, for most of the duration, I might have a great deal more to recall than this brief summary for the classroom, on two sheets of paper.I began to realise that memories, long forgotten, buried in time, were coming to the fore and if she was writing an essay. I might be able to write a book. In those early days my home town was near enough centre stage to much of the aerial action during the Battle of Britain and the ongoing conflict, above our heads, over the years. The area endured endless overflying of enemy raiders, attacking targets near and far, night and day, and was at the receiving end of attacks from V 1 and V 2 capons during the later stages of the War; it was also an area to witness the responding hordes of Allied bombers as they over flew us, from bases far inland, reaching out to targets in the Nazi heartland. I set about writing this account in earnest.
