Tennessee's John Wilder - Edward P. French - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

The Honorable John S. Wilder has served the constituents of Tennessee for over forty-years, and this historical accomplishment serves as the foundation of this work. In his political life, Lieutenant Governor Wilder has directly or indirectly impacted some of the most important administrative and public policy decisions over this period of time. Through archival document analysis and personal interviews with the Lieutenant Governor and many of his closest aids, political colleagues, and staunch opponents, the authors of this text have traced the history of John S. Wilder''s accomplishments and defeats from the late 1950s to the present. This triangulation of data collection and analysis helped the authors uncover forgotten political stories, and assisted in substantiating facts about many of the Lieutenant Governor''s major political decisions. Highlighted in the text are Wilder''s political triumphs over two coup attempts within the Democratic Party to oust him as Speaker of the Senate in the late 1980s. These efforts failed when the longest serving State Legislator in American history reached across party lines to maintain control of the second most powerful position in Tennessee state government. Now in his late 80''s, Wilder is still determined as ever to continue leading the Tennessee Senate well into the twenty-first century. This book chronicles the political career of the man from Somerville.

The Homecoming Seasons - James P. Macguire - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

The Homecoming Seasons - James P. Macguire - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

The Homecoming Seasons: An Irish Catholic Returns to a Changing Long Island is a deeply moving memoir of a returning natives re-experience of his childhood community. After many years abroad as a graduate student at Cambridge, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand, and as a country program director of health care and agricultural programs in central Africa, James MacGuire returned to New York and spent most of the 1980s at Time Inc., Macmillan and the Manhattan Institute. In 1990 he married and several years later, with a second child on the way, he and his wife decamped from Manhattan for a small enclave called the Isle of Wight in the village of Lawrence on the south shore of Long Island, where MacGuire had grown up. This book tells the story of MacGuire’s return to this world—how it had evolved from ancient times; been inhabited by indigenous peoples; colonized by the Dutch and English; and then grew from a sparsely populated agricultural corner of western Long Island to an early summer resort, then an outer, and, finally, an inner suburb of New York City. Jamie MacGuire skillfully weaves memories of his childhood in this almost hidden world with sketches of his family and their friends before updating his account with a lovingly detailed, diary-like depiction of returning. His parents’ friends now much older, the community more diverse, as he, his wife and children make new friends as they proceed into this changed world. He captures in cinematic detail the wonder of the wetlands and surrounding natural world, the poignant life, death and rebirth of community, the joys and sorrows of marriage and parenthood, and the profound exultation of safely shepherding two beloved sons to triumphant adulthood. This is an uplifting literary memoir that will earn and deserve the widest possible audience.

America's Global Role - Francis P. Sempa - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

America's Global Role - Francis P. Sempa - Bog - University Press of America - Plusbog.dk

America''s Global Role, a collection of essays and reviews on national security, geopolitics and war, combines a broad historical and geopolitical overview of U.S. national security policy with commentary on historical events and biographical sketches of historical figures. This book offers insights into the evolution of U.S. national security policy from the founding to the present. Sempa shows how the United States began as a sliver of territory on the eastern seaboard of central North America; pursued a policy of westward expansion by diplomacy, war, and conquest, exploiting the European balance of power; formulated and implemented national security doctrines designed to protect its security and promote further expansion; and survived a terrible Civil War that threatened to halt that expansion. Afterwards, America began to play a larger role on the global stage. During the first half of the twentieth century, the U.S. acted as an "offshore balancer" to restore the balance of power on the Eurasian landmass. Later, the U.S. became the geopolitical successor to the British Empire. The end of the Cold War produced an initial period of uncertainty in U.S. national security policy that ended with the events of September 11, 2001, as U.S. national security policy focused on efforts to defeat global Islamic terrorists and rogue states seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction. Sempa points out the political, demographic, and geopolitical developments of the early twenty-first century that have shifted the focus of U.S. national security policy from Europe to Asia.
