Knopf, this collection of letters was written by the daughter of a Javanese civil servant in the Dutch colonial government. She had been permitted the unusual privilege of attending a Dutch elementary school, but then returned home to seclusion during her adolescence, as was the Indonesian custom for women. The letters provide a fascinating picture of the life and spirit of the time during the period when Java was undergoing intimate contact with Western civilization. Through her writings she became a spokesman for the liberation and education of women, as well as an advocate for Indonesian nationalist aspirations. Co-published with the Asia Society.

The Labeling of Sex Offenders contributes to the research on the effects of sex offender registration and notification policies using the labeling perspective. The labeling perspective asserts that offenders who are labeled are more likely to re-offend; this is counter to sex offender registration policies, which assume that knowing the identity and whereabouts of sex offenders is imperative to the public''s ability to protect itself. This research used criminal data from the State of Arkansas within the framework of a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the recidivism of the first three waves of sex offenders registered (1997-1999) vs. a comparison group of sex offenders from a decade earlier (1978-1989). Key variables used to explain specific and general recidivism included the application of an active label, prior exposure to formal and informal labels, the intensity of the label, race, sex, and age. The findings presented by Madden indicate that there is no statistically significant difference between the two groups of sex offenders in terms of recidivism.

In contrast to common opinion, Roger David Aus explores the positive aspects of the Apostle Paul''s use of the image of ''triumphing'' in Second Corinthians 2:14. Through detailed analysis of both Greco-Roman and Judaic texts, this exciting new work completely revises recent interpretations of this decisive passage. Aus illuminates it with expert precision and identifies the roots of imagery such as the ''triumphal procession in Christ,'' ''fragrance of the knowledge of him,'' and the ''aroma of Christ.'' The origin of these and other images in verses 14-17 is found in both the Roman custom of a victorious general''s leading a triumphal procession through the city of Rome, and in Judaic interpretation of the famous rebellion of Numbers 17:6-15 (English 16:41-50). With great skill, Aus demonstrates here how the Hellenistic Jewish Christian Paul masterfully combines imagery from both Greco-Roman and Judaic sources.

Going Native or Going Naïve? is a critical analysis of an esoteric-Indian movement, called white shamanism. This movement, originating from the 1980''s New Age boom, redefines the phenomenon of playing Indian. For white shamans and their followers, Indianness turns into a signifier for cultural cloning. By generating a neo-primitivistic bias, white shamanism utilizes esoteric reconceptualizations of ethnicity and identity. In Going Native or Going Naïve?, a retrospective view on psychohistorical and sociopolitical implications of Indianness and (ig)noble savage metaphors should clarify the prefix neo within postmodern adaptations of primitivism. The appropriation of an Indian simulacrum by white shamans as well as white shamanic disciplines connotes a subtle, yet hazardous form of ethnocentrism. Transcending mere market trends and profit margins, white shamanism epitomizes synthetic/cybernetic acculturations. Through investigating the white shamanic matrix, Going Native or Going Naïve? is intended to make these synthesizing processes more transparent.

The new millennium juxtaposes different generations who were witnesses to the genesis of turmoil in Guyana. Since the year 1992, in which democracy returned to Guyana, opposition elements continue to be unreceptive to electoral defeats. The disinclination to concede electoral loss since 1992 has become a normative historical behavior in the Guyanese context. International observers have validated the four national elections in 1992, 1997, 2001, and 2006 as being free, fair, and transparent. Today, electoral defeat has a relationship with the infamous political/mass media/racial complex that constantly pursues the destabilization of the state and undermines nation-building. Essentially, this complex is a community of irrationality, engaging in a persistent dissemination of despair. This book focuses on politics, media, and race. The two main objectives of the work are: demonstrating the modus operandi and the dysfunctional consequences of this community of irrationality through the political/mass media/racial complex, and showing the rational behaviors that have held the society together since 1992. In the interest of building a strong nation, it may be useful to work toward a transformation of this community of irrationality to a community of rationality.

Poetic Acts & New Media advances the fields of literary and new media studies by clarifying boundaries between competing genres and media through the creation of a new artistic genre, "media poetry." This aesthetic mode of expression/becoming seeks to transform mass culture (our codes of communication) by self-consciously acknowledging how textual, audio, and/or visual signs are constructed according to their simulation and not their representation. This study draws heavily upon literary media theories that intersect with Gilles Deleuze''s philosophy of ''Sense'' as a simulated power of sensory transformations. Media poetry becomes a complex power of ''Sense'' by blending conventional mass-media codes with poetic simulations that provide alternative forms of creating meaning. Poetic Acts & New Media specifically examines the works of several poets that exemplify this multi-sensory approach to printed-text poetry, especially: ·Langston Hughes ·Tony Medina ·David Wojahn ·John Kinsella ·David Trinidad. It also analyzes several contemporary films that embody the multi-modal logic of media poetry: ·David Lynch''s Mullholland Drive ·Cameron Crowe''s Vanilla Sky ·Spike Jonze''s Being John Malkovich. In addition, this study interprets two influential primetime TV shows as exemplars of media poetry: Twin Peaks and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. All media poetry, regardless of genre or medium, allows readers/viewers to envision "reality production" as a rewriteable and poetic enterprise that can productively remediate any transparent abstraction or common-sense realism.
