Thackeray's Novels - Jack P. Rawlins - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

Jack P. Rawlins's study explores one of the great problems of mid-Victorian literature: the explanation and justification of William Makepeace Thackeray’s narrative style and structure. Rawlins finds that Thackeray in his novels of English society uses an exaggeratedly conventional plot structure as a means to comment on the condition of the novel in England. The frustration and fury that have traditionally been the response of the feeling reader to the excesses of Thackeray’s narrator are the result of a basic aesthetic conflict of which Thackeray wants to make us inescapably aware—a conflict between the dramatic action, which demands a commitment from us, and a narrator who feels that the commitment has been thoughtlessly made and who seeks to turn our attention to the didactic uses of the novel, to the lie of the realistic, and to other aesthetic and moral issues. Treating The Newcomers, Vanity Fair, The Virginians, and Philip in detail and the other works in the canon more briefly, Rawlins locates Thackeray directly astride the most serious aesthetic problem of his age: the status of fiction and its proper employment. The Real Environmental Crisis - Jack Hollander - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

The Real Environmental Crisis - Jack Hollander - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

Drawing a completely new road map toward a sustainable future, Jack M. Hollander contends that our most critical environmental problem is global poverty. His balanced, authoritative, and lucid book challenges widely held beliefs that economic development and affluence pose a major threat to the world's environment and resources. Pointing to the great strides that have been made toward improving and protecting the environment in the affluent democracies, Hollander makes the case that the essential prerequisite for sustainability is a global transition from poverty to affluence, coupled with a transition to freedom and democracy. The Real Environmental Crisis takes a close look at the major environment and resource issues--population growth; climate change; agriculture and food supply; our fisheries, forests, and fossil fuels; water and air quality; and solar and nuclear power. In each case, Hollander finds compelling evidence that economic development and technological advances can relieve such problems as food shortages, deforestation, air pollution, and land degradation, and provide clean water, adequate energy supplies, and improved public health. The book also tackles issues such as global warming, genetically modified foods, automobile and transportation technologies, and the highly significant Endangered Species Act, which Hollander asserts never would have been legislated in a poor country whose citizens struggle just to survive. Hollander asks us to look beyond the media's doomsday rhetoric about the state of the environment, for much of it is simply not true, and to commit much more of our resources where they will do the most good--to lifting the world's population out of poverty.

Employment Grievances and Disputes Procedures in Britain - P.l. Davies - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

Employment Grievances and Disputes Procedures in Britain - P.l. Davies - Bog - University of California Press - Plusbog.dk

Employment Grievances and Disputes Procedures in Britain is part of a broader comparative labor law project initiated in 1965 by Professor Benjamin Aaron, focusing on disputes procedures across the United States and several European countries, including Britain. This study, spearheaded by Professor K. W. Wedderburn and P. L. Davies, investigates the dynamics of labor disputes in Britain, emphasizing the country's complex and varied mechanisms for resolving employment grievances. Unlike the U.S., where labor disputes are typically divided into grievances over violations of rights and interest disputes over new terms, Britain does not strictly maintain this distinction. The book challenges traditional American views, demonstrating how British practices often blend negotiation and adjudication, especially in cases involving both rights and interests. The authors argue that informal and flexible dispute resolution methods in Britain, such as those used by industrial relations specialist Jack Scamp, tend to be more effective than formal legalistic approaches. This volume, which stands as a comprehensive analysis of British industrial relations, is significant not only for understanding the British system but also for its broader implications. The study raises critical questions about the role of law in resolving employment disputes, with insights relevant to labor relations worldwide. In particular, it provides valuable comparisons to the U.S. system, highlighting the benefits of more flexible dispute resolution procedures over rigid, formal structures. Wedderburn and Davies offer a thorough examination of the workings of industrial tribunals, public conciliation, and arbitration, particularly in light of the Redundancy Payments Act of 1965, and advocate for a system that favors conciliation and mediation. The book's findings are important for those examining the future of labor relations in both the U.S. and the U.K., suggesting that British informal methods could serve as a model for improving dispute resolution practices globally. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
