Arbutus Andrachnoides Hybrid Strawberry Tree Evergreen Tree

Arbutus Andrachnoides Hybrid Strawberry Tree Evergreen Tree

Arbutus Andrachnoides (Hybrid Strawberry Tree) is an RHS AGM-winning evergreen strawberry tree with dark green foliage and cinnamon-red bark. It’s excellent in sheltered spots with neutral to acidic soil. Also known as Red Barked Strawberry Tree, this is a naturally occurring hybrid cross between the Grecian species Arbutus Andrachne and the native Irish Unedo, otherwise known as the Killarney Strawberry tree. This evergreen tree is smaller than Unedo with the same-sized pinky-red strawberry-like fruits. The Hybrid Strawberry Tree produces autumn to wintertime masses of small pink-white blossoms, which ripen into fruit the following autumn. This strawberry tree cross has stringy cinnamon-red bark and a rounded crown of handsome dark green foliage all year.If you’re looking for an unusual, small evergreen tree to create vertical interest, graceful Arbutus Andrachnoides is an attention-grabbing choice.Height and Spread of Arbutus AndrachnoidesFast-growing Hybrid Strawberry Tree matures faster than both its parent plants. It reaches five metres in 5-10 years. How Hardy is Arbutus AndrachnoidesThis is a hardy evergreen in freezing temperatures, but it struggles to cope with a very exposed spot where harsh, drying winds damage its foliage. In exposed areas, unedo is a better choice. How To Use for Arbutus AndrachnoidesRed Barked Strawberry Tree is a great choice for compact gardens because it only reaches five metres tall. It’s grand enough to grab attention, but slim enough that it doesn’t take over the space. Its year-round dark green foliage and wintertime white flowers bring colour to drab winter gardens.Sunny, urban courtyards through to country cottage gardens benefit from its vertical height and colour, plus birds and insects find shelter in its evergreen foliage. Late-waking bees drink its wintertime nectar and birds enjoy the fruits.Despite its name, the strawberry-like fruits are not as tasty as strawberries. How to Care for Arbutus AndrachnoidesRed Barked Strawberry Tree enjoys full sun to partial shade. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained neutral-to-acidic soil and it should thrive with little attention. Young trees benefit from a south wall that creates shelter and traps warmth.Prune it in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Remove dead, damaged, or crossed branches and tidy up the shape by cutting branches just above a healthy bud. Do not heavily prune it, because that reduces flowering.Water thoroughly until established and during drought spells. A thick layer of well-rotted organic matter around the roots retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and provides nutrients for a dazzling display of white blossom.

Rhododendron Anna Rose Whitney for Sale Online UK

Rhododendron Anna Rose Whitney for Sale Online UK

Rhododendron Anna Rose Whitney is a large, evergreen hybrid rhododendron with glorious rose-pink flowers. It’s perfect for a large mixed border or a well-watered container.  Rhododendron Anna Rose Whitney was bred in Whitney, Washington USA in 1954. It’s proved a firm favourite in UK gardens for its vigorous evergreen leaves and pretty blooms. The fleshy textured evergreen foliage grows up to 11 centimetres long on strong woody stems that tend to grow outwards as well as up. In late spring and early summer large pink buds appear in clusters that bloom into funnel-shaped deep pink flowers with brown dappling beneath the petals. The blooms are large measuring up to ten centimetres in diameter. The flowers grow in ball-shaped trusses 10 to 20 flowers each. Flowers fade and fall before autumn, but its textured foliage remains all year. Height And Spread Of Rhododendron Anna Rose WhitneyThis hybrid is a tall variety that eventually reaches a bushy height of 4 metres eventually. This is a vigorous fast-growing shrub. It needs room to grow so choose its final spot carefully. How Hardy Is Rhododendron Anna Rose WhitneyRhododendrons are hardy shrubs and Anna Rose Whitney is no exception. It can survey harsh sub-zero winters if its roots are well-drained. It is fairly pest resistant and will survive droughts when established but may not flower without sufficient water. How To Use Rhododendron Anna Rose WhitneyThis rhododendron is a perfect evergreen specimen with real character. Its large showy blooms can’t be missed. It works well as part of a woodland garden or mixed border with its sister Rhododendron Van and will grow in a large well-watered container in a sheltered spot.  As it has no scent it’s a good choice for hayfever sufferers and its evergreen foliage brings shape and colour to a bare winter garden. How To Care For Rhododendron Anna Rose WhitneyRhododendron Anna Rose Whitney is a woodland plant that prefers partial shade and damp soil that’s humus-rich. It grows best in acidic soils and does not perform well in chalk. If you love this shrub but have chalky soils consider container gardening with ericaceous compost and frequent waterings. There is no need to prune Rhododendron Anna Rose Whitney other than removing any broken stems and dead flowers. If you wish to restrict its height, prune out crowded shoots in spring. Treated to a yearly application of rich leaf mould mulch on acid soil this rhododendron is a strikingly dramatic and fuss-free shrub.

Crataegus Monogyna Stricta Hawthorn Stricta for Sale Online

Crataegus Monogyna Stricta Hawthorn Stricta for Sale Online

Crataegus Monogyna Stricta or Hawthorn StrictaSynonymous with Crataegus Monogyna Fastigiata, Crataegus Monogyna Stricta is an upright form of hawthorn with erect branches and columnar habit. Tough and adaptable, this attractive, ornamental small tree is an excellent candidate for growing in exposed places, as a hedge or a screen. The hybrid cultivar Stricta is a variety of the native common hawthorn Crataegus Monogyna. Apart from its distinct fastigiated form, Hawthorn Stricta does not differ much from its parent. The foliage is deeply lobed, dark green until autumn when it matures to lovely yellow and orange tones. In May, a profusion of small, white, fragranced blossoms appears. Borne in umbels, they attract pollinators and are followed by small fruit, better known as haws. The fruit ripens to deep red in the autumn and is a favourite with birds. Even though the fruit is not edible while raw, it is often used in preparation of jams and jellies.Robust and sturdy, this cultivar fares well in a variety of conditions. As long as the soil is well-drained, in full sun to dapple shade, it will thrive. Exposed locations, harsh winds, and salt sprays will not bother this tree, which is why it is considered to be a good choice for coastal gardens.Originating from a European native, the Crataegus Monogyna Stricta variety is well accustomed to our climate. Fully hardy in the United Kingdom, this columnar tree will fare well even during harsher winters and strong frosts. With an average growth rate, Hawthorn Stricta can grow to be up to 10 metres high and approximately 3 metres wide. Compared to the majority of fastigiated trees, this variety can be considered small, and it is an excellent ornamental tree for small gardens.Easy to grow and to care for, this elegant tree needs little care to be in its best form. Prune the tree during its dormant phase, over the winter months, removing any dead, damaged, or congested shoots. As the cultivar matures, its branches tend to start drooping slightly, but routine trimming should keep the habit tight and erect as usual. Fairly compact, with dense, fastigiated form, Crataegus Monogyna Fastigiata is ideally suited for a tall, stately hedge in small gardens. Offering multiple seasons of interest and adding structure and texture to the landscape, this ornamental tree is best when planted en masse.

Picea Pungens Blue Diamond. Blue Spruce Blue Diamond Tree

Picea Pungens Blue Diamond. Blue Spruce Blue Diamond Tree

Picea pungens Blue Diamond or Blue Spruce Blue DiamondThe Picea pungens Blue Diamond, also commonly referred to as the Blue Spruce Blue Diamond, is a relatively new variety of the classically popular Colorado Blue Spruce tree. It was first developed in Deurne, Netherlands in 1990. It is a hybrid that was created by crossing the female, Picea pungens ‘Glauca' with an unknown male Picea pungens variety. Once the cross was made, the plant Blue Spruce Diamond was grown via the use of asexual cuttings. The tree was patented in both the United States and Europe. It is now widely available for sale to gardners around the world.Since 1991, the Blue Spruce Blue Diamond has successfully retained its distinctive characteristics, making it a popular landscape tree choice for any size garden. It grows in an eye-pleasing, strong, upright fashion and creates an outstanding pyramid shape that makes it a true focal point in any landscape. It produces one main, large stem and has vigorous lateral branches. Unlike other common Blue Spruce varieties which produce a drab blue shade, the colouration of the Blue Spruce Blue Diamond is an intense and vibrant blue with strong silver overlays that lasts all year long. The Blue Diamond exhibits a moderate growth rate. It usually attains a height of 66 cm in six years and then goes on to grow to 125 cm within 12 years. Average growth rate is generally about 15 cm per year. When fully grown, the Blue Diamond is expected to reach a height of at least 3 m.  Its width growth averages 56 cm in six years and 56 cm in 12 years.  The conifer grows well in temperatures that range from 8 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius. It can withstand temperatures down to minus 25 degrees Celsius with ease. Ideally, the Blue Spruce Blue Diamond should be planted in full sun for best growth. It grows well in all soil types, as long as the soil is well-draining. Best growth is normally attained in soil that is neutral to slightly acidic.  It does not tolerate excessively wet roots for an extended time period. The Blue Spruce Blue Diamond is virtually carefree once planted and established. Even periods of drought do to not adversely affect the tree’s growth. It requires no pruning to maintain its optimum pyramidal shape. However, it will tolerate a bit of trimming in the spring. It does not need fertilizer and will easily subsist on whatever nutrients the soil naturally provides. A Blue Spruce Blue Diamond will surely become the focal point of any garden. The medium size tree’s non-stop evergreen characteristics make it an ideal tree for any season. It has also become a popular Christmas tree choice around the world. It works particularly well as a Living Christmas Tree. More Conifers....
