Rosa Santana Climbing Rose Hybrid Tea Rose Santana

Rosa Santana Climbing Rose Hybrid Tea Rose Santana

Rosa Santana or Santana Climbing Rose also Hybrid Tea Rose SantanaRosa Santana is a large-flowered deciduous climber that produces semi-double, deep red flowers. The blossoms are highly-decorative and produce a soft fragrance. The profusion of the scarlet red roses is borne in small clusters, perfectly contrasted by the dark green, glossy foliage. When open, the flowers measure between 8 and 10 centimetres each. Not unlike most hybrid tea roses, Santana Climbing Rose is a continuously blooming cultivar, which means you will get to enjoy its gorgeous flowers for the better part of the year. This is usually from early spring to late in the autumn. This variety is particularly resistant to downy mildew. It has average resistance when it comes to black spot. For the latter, preventative treatment is recommended for best results.Height and Spread of Rosa SantanaA vigorous variety, Santana Climbing Rose will achieve a height of 2.5m and a spread of 2.5m after 2 to 5 years. This particular variety is well-suited to be grown in pots as it is fairly compact when mature. How Hardy is Rosa SantanaFirst selected in Germany, this hybrid tea rose variety is hardy in the United Kingdom. However, winter protection is still recommended- be sure to take necessary steps to prevent frost from damaging this attractive climber. How To Use Rosa SantanaSantana Climbing Rose has attractive foliage, vigorous growth habit, and most importantly, it will continuously produce clusters of gorgeous ruby red roses throughout the season. Needless to say, it will add value and interest to any garden! Fantastic for pillars or covering up drab sun-facing walls on your property, Hybrid Tea Rose Santana will also look stunning when left to grow against trellis, arches or pergolas. Any structure that will allow the plant to spread and proudly display its abundant flowers. Grow in a container with a suitable screen for climbing to add interest to entryways or patios. How To Care For Rosa SantanaThis climbing rose is not too demanding. It will perform best when grown in a sheltered sunny position. Santana Climbing Rose is not particularly picky when it comes to the type of soil, but be sure not to plant it in a spot where you have previously grown roses as the soil will be depleted from nutrients.

Catalpa Erubescens Purpurea Purple Indian Bean Tree Hybrid

Catalpa Erubescens Purpurea or Purple Indian Bean Tree is a beautiful, late flowering deciduous tree with large attractive purple foliage and white bell-shaped flowers. It holds the RHS AGM and its medium size suits compact gardens.Catalpa is a genus of late flowering trees native to tropical and temperate regions of East Asia, the Caribbean, and the eastern and south-eastern United States. The sub-species Catalpa Bignonioides is native to the United States where it’s called Indian Bean Tree and is often grown as a street tree. Catalpa erubescens Purpurea is a hybrid of the Indian Bean Tree. It retains its parent plant’s attractive nature and bean-like pods, but adds rich purple shades to its foliage. Young shoots and early leaves emerge blackish-purple and mature to dark green in late summer. As they mature, 3 cm white bell-shaped flowers with orange and purple markings bloom in large panicles. If pollinated, these flowers develop into long, slim bean-like seed capsules.Purple Hybrid Catalpa takes a few years to mature and develop its flowers but it’s worth the wait.Height And Spread of Catalpa Erubescens PurpureaPurple Indian Bean Tree reaches 12 metres and spreads over 8 metres in 20-50 years. How Hardy Is Catalpa Erubescens PurpureaIts foliage looks delicate, but this is a hardy tree in the UK if its roots are well drained and it’s positioned in a sheltered spot. How To Use Catalpa Erubescens PurpureaThis is an excellent specimen tree for a sheltered lawn where it grabs all the attention in summer. It also suits the back of a mixed border with other varieties of Indian Bean Trees such as Catalpa Bignonioides Nana and  Catalpa Bignonioides Aurea. How To Care For Catalpa Erubescens PurpureaPurple Hybrid Catalpa needs a moist but well-drained spot in a sunny position that’s sheltered from harsh winds that tear its large foliage. It will grow in all types of soil including clay and chalk if it has wind protection and plenty of sun.  Young trees benefit from frost protection. Cover their branches in horticultural fleece when frost is forecast. Pruning isn’t necessary and will ruin the shape of the branches.Give Purple Indian Bean Tree lots of water until you see new growth and add a thick layer of organic mulch to its roots in spring to help boost that rich foliage and stunning flowers later in summer.

Rhododendron Princess Anne Dwarf Hybrid for Sale Online UK

Rhododendron Princess Anne Dwarf Hybrid for Sale Online UK

Rhododendron Princess AnneRhododendron Princess Anne is an AGM winning evergreen dwarf hybrid rhododendron with pale yellow flowers.Rhododendrons are native to the Far East and generally grow in woodland. However the Dwarf hybrids originated as alpine plants rather than the woodland rhododendrons and so are best grown free-standing or away from the shade of trees. Princess Anne's foliage is light matt green and often bronze when it first emerges. In spring green buds open to pale yellow flowers in trusses of 10 blooms. The bee-attracting blooms are funnel-shaped and measure around 3 cm in width. The pale yellow shade is complemented by a light green throat and long stamens with orange tips. During winter leaves remain on the plant often turning a subtle bronzed hue. This is a low growing rhododendron with a compact, neat growth habit. It looks good all year round.Height And Spread of Rhododendron Princess AnneRhododendron Princess Anne is a compact low-growing shrub that will reach a height and spread of 1.2 metres. It is one of the smaller rhododendrons on the market. How Hardy is Rhododendron Princess AnneRhododendron Princess Anne is UK winter hardy down to sub-zero temperatures if its roots are well-drained. How To Use Rhododendron Princess AnnePrincess Anne is a pretty, low maintenance rhododendron that suits a mixed border or an island bed. Its soft flowers boost a cottage garden border and its structure brings form to an urban Japanese style courtyard or rock garden. It will grow well in drained conditions, so suits a bank or a large container on the patio too.How To Care For Rhododendron Princess AnneRhododendrons need acidic soil. If grown in alkaline conditions they become chlorotic and lose their leaves. Put plenty of ericaceous compost in the planting hole and top-dress each year to ensure sufficient iron supplies. If you have chalky soil it’s best to plant rhododendrons in a large well-watered container of ericaceous compost. Ensure the stem is not buried in the planting hole and water well until established. This rhododendron hybrid prefers well-drained rich soil away from the shade of trees in plenty of sunshine. Some shelter from harsh drying wind is recommended to encourage good blooming. You won’t need to prune Princess Anne, but top up the soil with an acid-based mulch each year for healthy growth.

Vitex Agnus-Castus Magical Chicagoland Blues Hybrid Variety

Vitex Agnus-Castus Magical Chicagoland Blues Hybrid Variety

Vitex Agnus-Castus Magical Chicagoland Blues, also known as Chaste Tree Magical Chicagoland Blues or Hemp Tree, is a standout new variety of an old garden favourite. This compact, improved hybrid is bred for smaller garden spaces, boasting enhanced hardiness, drought resistance, and exceptionally long flowering panicles. With fragrant lavender-blue blooms set against dark, aromatic foliage and distinctive black stems, it brings striking colour and texture just as many other plants are fading. A magnet for pollinators and a true multi-season performer, this variety brings modern versatility to a traditionally warm-climate shrub.Vitex Agnus-Castus Magical Chicagoland Blues is a deciduous shrub with a refined, rounded habit and a bushy, upright form. The foliage is highly decorative – composed of 5 to 7 narrow, lance-shaped leaflets radiating in a hand-like shape, giving the plant a distinctive, airy elegance. The leaves are a rich green shade and release a subtle, pleasant fragrance when brushed against – a trait often likened to lavender or sage. From late summer into early autumn, the plant produces upright panicles of small, tubular lavender-blue flowers. These are borne on dramatic dark stems, offering a strong contrast and long-lasting visual appeal. The flowers are not only attractive to the eye but are also sterile – meaning no unwanted self-seeding – while still being highly attractive to bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens.Unlike the species form - Vitex Agnus-Castus - which can become large and unruly, this newer variety stays compact and manageable, yet delivers a profusion of colour and scent. Its improved hardiness extends the reach of Vitex into cooler climates, allowing gardeners in temperate regions to enjoy the charms of this sun-loving shrub.Height and Width of Vitex Magical Chicagoland BluesThis variety grows to a modest height and spread of around 1.5 to 2.5 metres, making it ideal for smaller borders, courtyards, or patio containers. Its well-balanced rounded habit means it looks neat without heavy pruning, and it's significantly more compact than the typical Vitex agnus-castus, which can reach over 3 metres. How Hardy is Chaste Tree Magical Chicagoland Blues?Vitex Agnus-Castus Magical Chicagoland Blues is notably hardier than the species, bred specifically to withstand colder winters and a wider range of growing conditions. It is suitable for gardens across much of the UK, particularly in well-drained, sheltered sites. Once established, it exhibits exceptional drought tolerance, making it a resilient choice for low-maintenance or Mediterranean-style planting schemes.Uses in Garden and LandscapeThanks to its compact form and late-season flowering, this improved chaste tree is incredibly versatile. Use it as a specimen shrub, in mixed borders, gravel gardens, or even large containers where its aromatic foliage and vibrant blooms can be appreciated up close. It makes an excellent choice for wildlife gardens due to its high nectar yield and non-invasive nature. Pair it with ornamental grasses, salvias, or drought-tolerant perennials for a naturalistic and water-wise display.Care TipsPlant Vitex Magical Chicagoland Blues in full sun for best flowering and foliage performance. It prefers well-drained soil and does best in a sheltered spot protected from cold winds. Water regularly during establishment, but once settled in, it is highly drought tolerant. Prune in early spring to shape and encourage new flowering growth – flowering occurs on new wood. It is generally pest- and disease-free and requires little maintenance beyond an annual tidy-up.Origins and Distinctive FeaturesVitex Agnus-Castus Magical Chicagoland Blues was developed by the Chicago Botanic Garden and selected for its suitability to North American climates from California to the deep south – and now proving equally useful in UK gardens. Compared to standard Vitex agnus-castus, this variety is more compact, better behaved, and longer flowering. Its sterile flowers, enhanced cold tolerance, and compact size make Vitex Magical Chicagoland Blues a welcome innovation in the world of ornamental shrubs – perfect for today’s smaller, sustainable gardens.

You can keep it smaller with a yearly prune. How Hardy Is Rose Blaze SuperiorClimbing Rose Blaze Superior is hardy in minus temperatures throughout the UK if the roots are well-drained.How To Use Rose Blaze SuperiorClimbing Rose Blaze Superior is a good choice for bare walls and fence lines in a sunny spot. Its lush foliage and repeat crimson blooms provide plenty of cover in the summer months. This climbing rose will grow up an obelisk, arch, or pergola covering the surface with large sweetly scented flowers from either the soil or a large well-watered and fed container. Bee-friendly Rose Blaze Superior is a good low maintenance choice for wildlife garden as the repeat blooms are a magnet for our essential pollinators.  How To Care For Rose Blaze SuperiorChoose a sunny, warm spot in a sheltered position for climbing roses. Rose Blaze Superior loves manure rich soils so when planting or potting up incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure into the planting hole. This will encourage more flowers and healthier foliage. If you’ve planted against a wall give it plenty of water in dry spells as walls and fence lines can prevent rainfall from reaching the roots. Regularly deadheading the spent flowers will encourage new buds to form.  Cut back a third in late winter or early spring and remove all dead or crossed branches as this stimulates new fresh growth. A thick layer of well-rotted mulch in spring traps moisture and proves nutrients for the growing year.

Magnolia Sentinel Pink Flowering Magolia Hybrid for Sale

Magnolia Sentinel Pink Flowering Magolia Hybrid for Sale

Magnolia Sentinel is a deciduous spring-blooming magnolia with long-lasting pale pink flowers. It’s an upright variety and a perfect specimen tree for borders or compact gardens.Magnolia are ancient plants found in fossil records across the world, but now they are only native to South America and the Far East. They were named after French botanist Pierre Magnol in the early 1700s when they found their way to Europe with the plant hunters.Magnolia Sentinel was bred to have a longer flowering season than other magnolias and for its upright columnar habit. Its goblet-shaped long-lasting blooms appear on bare branches in early spring. The buds are an attractive deep pink, before opening to pretty pale pink and there’s often a second flowering in summer. Attractive dark green glossy foliage emerges after the blooms and falls when the frosts arrive.Magnolia Sentinel is an excellent choice if your outdoor space is compact and you need an upright shrub or tree with long-lasting spring flowers.Height And Spread of Magnolia SentinelMagnolia Sentinel reaches a maximum height of 10 metres over 10 years. How Hardy Is Magnolia SentinelThis is a winter hardy magnolia that can withstand minus temperatures in well-drained soil, but it needs shelter from harsh, cold winds and shouldn’t be planted in a frost pocket. How To Use Magnolia SentinelBecause Magnolia Sentinel has a longer flowering period than many other varieties of magnolia it’s a top choice of specimen tree in a sheltered, sunny spot.Magnolia suit both country cottage style gardens with their pretty flowers but also urban courtyards with their structural shapes and goblet style flowers.Sentinel is perfect for woodland borders, sheltered front gardens, and Japanese style spaces. How To Care For Magnolia SentinelMagnolia Sentinel prefers a sunny, sheltered spot that’s protected from harsh wind and lingering frost that damages the buds and prevents the anticipated flower show.It does best in neutral to slightly acidic soil but will manage in alkaline conditions too. If your garden is very chalky, fill the planting hole with ericaceous compost and top it up with a yearly acidic mulch of pine or bracken-based compost.Pruning isn’t needed because magnolia tends to grow in a naturally open goblet shape, but if necessary you can prune back any dead or crossed branches in midsummer after the flowering has finished.

Fargesia Obelisk Umbrella Bamboo Fargesia Nitida Obelisk

Fargesia Obelisk Umbrella Bamboo Fargesia Nitida Obelisk

Fargesia Obelisk (Fargesia murieliae x Fargesia nitida)The hybrid bamboo Fargesia Obelisk (common name Umbrella Bamboo Obelisk) combines the superior qualities of both its parent plants - Fargesia Murieliae and Fargesia Nitida. It is sometimes also referred to as Fargesia Nitida Obelisk. This bamboo is a new is a new Fargesia hybrid first introduced in 2015. It tolerates cold well and can withstand a temperature drop to -25 Celsius without perishing or suffering damage. Even in the inclement weather of winter, it retains its vibrant green appearance. Fargesia Obelisk grows to a height of 4 to 5 meters with a spread of 2 meters. Its size can be maintained with regular shearing. Unlike some other bamboo plants, the Umbrella Bamboo Obelisk is non-invasive and easy to contain in the garden. It produces vigorous upright growth in the pillar shape of a classic obelisk. This bamboo makes an excellent garden accent or privacy evergreen screen. It also grows well beside ponds or creeks where its roots may experience excessive water saturation. Umbrella Bamboo Obelisk can also successfully grow in a large pot as long as it has adequate root room.  The leaves of the Fargesia Obelisk are lance-shaped with an exceptionally bright mint green colouration. This bamboo creates shoots that grow ample leaves the first year of growth. The culms first appear green in colour and then take on a slightly burnished hue towards the top as the culm matures. Fargesia Obelisk grows well in full sun or partial shade. The exceptionally hardy grass also withstands full shade, although its growth might be stunted in such a planting location. The tough Umbrella Bamboo Obelisk tolerates a wide array of soils types. It will grow in loam, sandy loam and clay with ease.  It prefers evenly moist soil and doesn’t tolerate drought well. However, during a severe drought the bamboo’s growth rate might be stunted or stopped. If a drought is forecast, the grass will benefit from supplemental watering. Ideally, Obelisk prefers to grow in a slightly humid area where it truly thrives. In such a location, the bamboo grows rapidly. A five year old clump of Fargesia Obelisk stands approximately 2.5 meters high and 1 meter wide. At ten years old, the culms of the bamboo generally stand 4 to 5 meters with a width of 2.5 meters. The Fargesia Obelisk is an ideal bamboo choice if you want an eye-catching bamboo that is cold hardy and non-invasive. Once established, this bamboo variety requires very little care to truly thrive and flourish.

Corylus Rode Zellernoot Red Leaved Hazel Tree for Sale Online

Corylus Rode Zellernoot Red Leaved Hazel Tree for Sale Online

Corylus Rode Zellernoot or Red Leaved HazelIf you are looking for a productive and beautiful native hedge or shrub then it’s worth considering Corylus Rode Zellernoot - the Red Leaved Hazel. This stunning hazel hybrid produces edible nuts and glorious foliage. The full botanical name is Corylus Avellana Rode Zellernoot. It is a hybrid of Corylus Maxima and the common hazel Corylus Avellana. Rode Zellernoot means ‘red nut’ which refers to its leaf colour. Red Leaved Hazel is a decorative deciduous shrub that produces new red leaves in spring each evenly spaced along its fine, whippy branches. These serrated red leaves grow larger than the common hazel and mature into a bronze-green during the summer months before falling in the autumn. In summer, after the foliage is established, Red Leaved Hazel produces catkins. The male catkins are yellow-green and the female are a much smaller red catkin. Edible oval-shaped hazelnuts begin to appear in late summer to early autumn. The nuts are hidden inside red-toned husks with only the top peeping out. The nuts are particularly tasty and attractive to wildlife. How Hardy Is Corylus Rode ZellernootThe Red Leaved Hazel is extremely hardy, its parents being native to the UK. It will survive our winters and wet conditions, although young plants may need protection from harsh, drying winds for the first few years. How To Use Corylus Rode ZellernootAll hazels provide shelter and food for wildlife, particularly when grown as part of a hedgerow. This makes it an attractive hedging option for a wildlife garden. Hazel manages well in coastal and urban areas too. Corylus Rode Zellernoot will produce lots of new growth each year, reaching a maximum height of 3-4 metres, but it can be cut back in winter to maintain its size and shape.Corylus Rode Zellernoot varies from other varieties of hazel in that its foliage is a brighter red than its cousins, and its stems run straight to form a tight hedgerow, unlike Corylus Avellana Red Majestic which is an attractive red shade but has corkscrew branches.  How to Care For Corylus Rode ZellernootHazelnuts are among the easiest nuts to grow and they take up much less space than you would think. The Hazelnut family includes Corylus Avellana which is the common hazel and closely related filberts and cobnuts. All members of the Hazel family produce showy catkins in spring (these are male) which pollinate the very small flowers (female).  If you want to create a hedge in larger spaces, place your hazels four metres apart and reduce their height to encourage bushiness. Hazelnuts are very hardy being tolerant of cold and wet conditions. It will prefer a rich, loamy soil but will grow well in chalky and clay conditions provided it’s not water-logged. To ensure a maximum supply of nuts, it is best to plant at least 2 hazel trees (of any variety) as they are wind pollinated.Corylus Rode Zellernoot is as highly valued for its decorative display of changing leaves and showy catkins as it is for the tasty hazelnuts. If you want to grow a crop of nuts for autumn, help wildlife and create a beautiful display the Red Leaved Hazel is for you.
