Magnolia Betty, Kosar-DeVos large flowering Magnolia hybrid

Magnolia Betty, Kosar-DeVos large flowering Magnolia hybrid

Magnolia Betty is a beautiful deciduous spring-flowering ornamental tree with large purple, red and white toned flowers that arrive early in the season, but late enough to avoid frost damage.Magnolia Betty is one of the ‘Little Girl Hybrids’ that were crossed between Magnolia Lilliflora Nigra and Magnolia Stellata Rosea in the USA during the 1950s. The series is more formally known as Kosar-DeVos Hybrids and includes the popular cultivars Magnolia Susan and Magnolia Ricki.Betty is a vigorous magnolia with tree-like form and huge 20 cm diameter flowers that are deep red-purple outside but creamy white on the inside. Betty was bred to flower early enough to beat most other plants in the garden, but late enough to avoid frosts that can destroy spring flowers. Its foliage is typically magnolia oval in shape and mid-green, but it turns a pretty shade of copper in the autumn. If you love magnolias this is a reliable choice that avoids blooming during the frosty season and creates a stunning profuse show of huge blooms each year.Height And Spread of Magnolia BettyMagnolia Betty grows in tree form rather than a shrub and reaches 2.5 to 4 metres in height and spread over 10-20 years. How Hardy Is Magnolia BettyThis is a hardy magnolia that copes with below-zero winters if it’s grown in well-drained soil. It needs shelter from cold winds and copes with some drought once established. How To Use Magnolia BettyMagnolia Betty is a stunning specimen tree that blooms early and brings plenty of colour to a bare garden. It suits flower borders and standalone spots, and can be grown in a large well-watered and fed container to brighten up a deck or balcony.Magnolias suit country cottage style gardens, but also modern urban spaces with their large structural blooms and because Betty is virtually no maintenance, it suits wildlife-friendly spaces and gardeners with little time on their hands. How To Care For Magnolia BettyMagnolia Betty needs little care if it’s planted in an advantageous spot. Choose moist but well-drained neutral to acidic soil in full sun for the best flowers. Near a sheltering fence or wall is a good spot because harsh, cold winds can damage flowers and foliage.Pruning isn’t necessary and can ruin the shape, so it’s best to hold off with the secateurs only removing dead or crossed branches in mid-summer after the flowers have fallen.Water Magnolia Betty well until established and apply a thick layer of acidic mulch such as bracken or pine mulch in very early spring to provide nutrients and trap moisture for the growing season.Lots more Magnolia varieties on the website.

Buy Rhododendron Germania Bright Pink Flowering Buy Online UK

Rhododendron Germania is considered a semi-dwarf variety of Rhododendron hybrid. It is relatively low-growing and compact plant compared to other Rhododendrons and is a mid-to late spring flowerer. However, it is the huge beautiful deep pink blooms that are a genuine stand-out feature of this hybrid variety. The enormous pink blooms appear in May. The flowers are paler at the centre and a deeper pink closer to the edges. They appear in clusters at the end of a single stalk. There can be as many as 15 flowers in one truss. The evergreen foliage is a glossy dark green and the leaves are medium-sized. Germania has a tendency to grow wider than it is tall, which is another feature that adds to its popularity - in 10 years, it will reach a maximum height of only 1.5 metres. Rhododendron Germania was hybridised and registered in 1956 by Dietrich Hobbie of the famous Hobbie Rhododendron Park in Northern Germany, run by the Hobbie family for over 90 years. Its seed parent is R. Antoon van Welie and its pollen parent is R. Williamsianum.Rhododendron Germania is one of the hardiest Rhododendrons (hardy to H5 which is in excess of minus 20 C. and has a tendency to grow wider than it is tall and suits most habitats. Eriobotrya Coppertone Loquat. Eriobotrya Japonica Coppertone

Eriobotrya Coppertone Loquat. Eriobotrya Japonica Coppertone

Eriobotrya Coppertone Japanese LoquatEriobotrya Coppertone, also called Coppertone Loquat or Eriobotrya Japonica Coppertone is an attractive small evergreen fruit tree ideal for a sheltered spot! Coppertone is a hybrid of Eriobotrya or Japanese Loquat, a genus of evergreen trees & shrubs of Asian origin that are related to Photinia. It produces blossom in milder parts of the UK in early spring sometimes followed by edible loquat fruits but is mainly grown for its large exotic-looking foliage. The origins of Eriobotrya Japonica Coppertone are a little unclear, but this relatively new cultivar may be a hybrid of bronze loquat and Indian hawthorn. It has a dense, rounded crown. The exotic evergreen leaves, long and narrow, are a glossy green on top and a felted paler green below. This cultivar is distinguished by the bronze-coloured new leaves that emerge in spring, adding a pop of colour. At the same time, the small, extremely fragrant pale pink flowers bloom, perfuming the air around them. In very hot and sunny locations the flowers may be followed by edible orange-yellow fruits. It is most likely to fruit in Southern UK locations and has been known to do well in the milder London micro-climate. Height and Spread of Eriobotrya CoppertoneEriobotrya Coppertone can grow to 3 metres tall in 10 years, eventually reaching a mature height of 5-6 metres and spread of 3 metres. How Hardy Is Eriobotrya CoppertoneEriobotrya Coppertone is hardy in coastal and relatively mild parts of the UK except in severe winters and is at risk from early frosts, generally down to -5. It may be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or a good microclimate. How to Use Eriobotrya CoppertoneEriobotrya Japonica Coppertone is a perfect small exotic fruit tree for a sheltered, sunny spot in a courtyard garden or on a patio, where it will happily grow in a large container or against a brick or stone wall for maximum protection, and can be pruned to maintain a smaller size. Full standard Eriobotrya Coppertone with a 2 metre clear stem can also be trained to make an attractive living screen above the fence-line with its dense evergreen foliage! Japanese Loquat Coppertone is an excellent addition to the hardy exotic garden. How to Care for Eriobotrya CoppertonePlant Eriobotrya Coppertone in full sun in a sheltered position in any well-drained soil. It is very drought-resistant once established. This small tree is very tolerant of aerosol salt, so can be planted in coastal regions, especially in the South-West. As it also tolerant of pollution, it is a good choice for city gardens, especially in cities like London where the urban microclimate is milder. Eriobotrya Japonica Coppertone is deer resistant, so is suitable for use in country gardens without protection from animals. Prune to maintain an attractive shape of the crown in late summer or early autumn.Eriobotrya Coppertone is an excellent small ornamental evergreen fruit tree for a sheltered spot, with its attractive foliage, fragrant flowers and the tantalising prospect of loquat fruits when grown in milder areas of the UK.

Pinus Nigra Bambino Gaëlle Brégeon Austrian Pine Bambino. One of the smallest dwarf conifers.

Pinus Nigra Bambino Gaëlle Brégeon Austrian Pine Bambino. One of the smallest dwarf conifers.

Pinus Nigra Bambino also known as Pinus Bambino Gaëlle Brégeon or Austrian Pine Bambino. Pinus Nigra Bambino is a relatively rare and very small dwarf conifer from the Swiss plantsman Henri Brégeon. It is the least well known of a trio of his black pine (pinus negra) crossed with Pinus Densiflora (Jaapanese Red Pine) hybrids, all of which are patented. The other two are Pinus Nigra Pierrick Bregeon (Brepo) and Pinus Negra Marie Brégeon. The Gaëlle Brégeon variety or Bambino, as it is often called, was selected in 1992. It boasts an even growth habit and a lovely naturally rounded spherical shape. This dwarf conifer has vibrant and striking foliage: the long soft narrow needles add colour to the landscape, and the dark red-brown winter buds beautifully contrast the greenery of the needles when the temperatures drop. The smallest of the three Brégeon’s Austrian pine hybrids, Bambino is exceptionally tough, low-maintenance and highly ornamental.Height and Spread of Pinus Nigra Bambino: This dwarf conifer is also very slow growing. In a period of 10 years, it will grow to just 45 cm in height and around 60 cm in width. How Hardy is Pinus Nigra Bambino? Pinus Bambino Gaëlle Brégeon is also quite resilient and tough. This robust little shrub is fully hardy in the United Kingdom and will withstand sub-zero temperatures. How To Use Pinus Nigra Bambino: Thanks to its petite size and highly decorative appearance, Austrian Pine Bambino can be a great addition to any garden. Whether grown in a rock garden, a small city garden, as a lawn specimen, or in pots and containers to be used to pretty up balconies, terraces, and patios, this versatile and low-maintenance dwarf conifer will add year-round interest. How To Care For Pinus Nigra Bambino: Austrian Pine Bambino will happily grow virtually anywhere but it does love full sun. The only thing these conifers will not tolerate is waterlogged soil. For best results, plant in a sunny spot in well-drained soils. No pruning necessary, as this dwarf hybrid naturally grows in a mounded, rounded shape.

Photinia Red Robin Compacta Photinia Red Robin Compact

Photinia Red Robin Compacta Photinia Red Robin Compact

A new selection of Photinia, Photinia Red Robin Compacta is a dwarf variety with stunning foliage and petite size. Retaining all the well-loved features of its close relatives, Photinia x Fraseri Red Robin Compacta (to give it its full botanical name), is ideally suited for mid-sized hedges or growing in large containers.Photinia x Fraseri Red Robin Compacta is more compact than the traditional Photinia x Fraseri Red Robin which can grow to be a very large hedge and the smaller Photinia x Fraseri Little Red Robin a smaller little brother. Photinia Red Robin Compacta has smaller leaves and most importantly it has a much more compact growth habit than Little Red Robin, which if left uncut tends to get a bit leggy once it reaches 1 metre height. Photinia Red Robin Compacta otherwise has all the hallmark Photinia well-loved features - new leaves emerge bright red in spring, maturing to a glossy green shade in summer.  Scarce white blossoms are produced during spring as well, but the scarlet foliage steals the spotlight. Compacta is prefect for dense mid-sized hedges of up to 2 metres.Photinia Red Robin Compact is not fussy when it comes to ideal growing conditions. It prefers fertile, humus-rich soil that is moist but well drained. It will grow well both in full sun and partial shade, but a sunnier spot in the garden will encourage the lovely, crimson shade of the foliage. Rarely affected by any pest and diseases, tolerates drought once established.Photinia Red Robin Compact, as the name suggests, keeps its small size as it develops. The maximum height and spread this evergreen shrub will achieve is around 2 meters, which is half the size of regular Photinia x Fraseri Red Robin.A robust hybrid, Photinia Red Robin Compacta is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. This evergreen shrub is not bothered by frost or harsh winds, and it can survive even if the winter temperatures drop to 15 degrees below zero.Low-maintenance and with dense, lovely foliage, Photinia Red Robin Compact is a perfect candidate for hedging. It offers year-round interest and its spring scarlet foliage will add particular decorative value to your garden. See also our complete collection of hedging plants.

Deutzia Mont Rose. Pink Flowering Deutzia Shrub for Sale UK

Deutzia Mont Rose. Pink Flowering Deutzia Shrub for Sale UK

Deutzia Mont Rose is an attractive Deutzia hybrid. Mont Rose is a deciduous, medium-sized shrub with recognizable rose pink blooms. A prolific summer bloomer, this flowering shrub makes a great specimen plant, especially for smaller gardens. The branches of this multi-stemmed, upright-rounded bush are enveloped in dense, green foliage early spring through to late autumn. The leaves are ovate and toothed, serving as a subtle background for the profuse display of flowers. In early summer, Deutzia Mont Rose is overflowing with clusters of star-shaped, pale pink blossoms. The blush flowers are borne in conical panicles and have a pleasant, light scent.Easily grown, Deutzia Mont Rose isn’t fussy when it comes to location. It will flourish in most types of soils, including soils with poor drainage, but prefers moist but well-drained soil, rich in humus. Tolerant of partial shade, this deciduous flowering bush will bloom more abundantly if planted in full sun.  Fast-growing, with a bushy, erect habit, it can grow to be 50 centimetres to 1 metre tall, and 1 to 1.5 metres wide. Bred in France, this specific variety of Deutzia is fully hardy in all of the UK. With the ability to withstand temperatures as low as -15 degrees, Mont Rose won’t need sheltering from frost. Generally healthy and tough, this shrub is highly resistant to pests and diseases. Deutzia Mont Rose is also the recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. Same as other Deutzia varieties, this cultivar requires very little pruning. Routine pruning should be done immediately after the flowering season, cutting one-third of the old stems to the ground to promote new growth. Dead and damaged branches should be removed regularly, as well as weak shoots, to encourage flower-bearing growth. Deutzia varieties are generally known for their informal shape, so it’s best to trim them yearly.Fast-growing yet relatively compact, Deutzia Mont Rose is a great plant for gardens with limited space. This profuse flowering shrub works great as a part of a mixed or a shrub border, especially if combined with low-growing shrubs with spring interest. With an elegant, upright shape and numerous clusters of dainty pink flowers, this shrub is a great choice as a focus plant as well.

Deutzia Hybrida Strawberry Fields Stunning Pink Flowering

Deutzia Hybrida Strawberry Fields Stunning Pink Flowering

Deutzia Hybrida Strawberry Fields is a lovely, summer-flowering shrub which has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its many attractive qualities. It’s a great choice for UK gardeners everywhere! With its origins in the Himalayas, Deutzia Strawberry Fields is a newer hybrid with a more compact growth habit, making it a more versatile landscaping plant. The leaves that emerge in the early spring on the arching stems are medium green and ovate. In late spring and early summer the bushes are covered in masses of fragrant flowers 2.5 cm across, deep pink to red on the outside with a contrasting white centre. They will attract bees and butterflies to your garden. Hardy throughout most of the UK, Deutzia Strawberry Fields will grow quickly to reach its full height and spread of 1.5-2.5 metres in 5 to 10 years, but it is best to keep it pruned every year to about 1 metre to maintain healthy growth. As well as cutting back the overall size after flowering, cut out any dead or damaged stems, and a third of the healthy stems back to the base. If planting more than one, space the plants 1.5 metres apart.  Deutzia Hybrida Strawberry Fields will grow best in full sun or partial shade, in an exposed or sheltered location, in any fertile, moist, well-drained soil. They are resistant to pests and diseases. Tolerant to salt, they will grow well in coastal areas. Suited to container planting, Deutzia Strawberry Fields is a good choice for a rooftop terrace or courtyard planter, where its long season of spectacular flowers will give good value, and the green leaves and arching stems will provide a pleasant backdrop through the rest of the growing season. Deutzia Hybrida Strawberry Fields will also work well at the back of a mixed border, planted with late tulips to complement the pink blooms. A summer-blooming clematis can be trained up through the stems to provide late-season interest. On a country property, the low-maintenance and deer-resistant shrub will work well on a difficult exposed slope or a bank next to a stream or pond, or in an informal or mixed hedge, where a mass planting of the extravagantly blooming Deutzia Strawberry Fields will put on a stunning display. Deutzia Hybrida Strawberry Fields in full bloom is a delight to behold, and its long flowering period makes it a worthwhile addition to any garden, large or small!

Polystichum Setiferum Herrenhausen Soft Shield Fern for Sale Online UK

Polystichum Setiferum Herrenhausen Soft Shield Fern for Sale Online UK

Polystichum Setiferum Herrenhausen is more commonly known as the Soft Shield Fern. Polystichum Setiferum ferns are native to Britain. The hybrid Herrenhausen fern of the family is named after a royal garden in Germany. The Soft Shield Fern is a semi-evergreen, meaning it has foliage all summer and for much of the rest of the year as new fronds begin to grow as the old ones die back. Polystichum Setiferum Herrenhausen foliage develops like pointed filigree lace lengthening into single fronds that can reach up to a metre in length. Its feather-like fronds develop from tiny curled ovals that gradually unfurl. The foliage is long-lasting, bright green and soft. More established specimens grow as mounds whilst the younger ones appear more like upright shuttlecocks. Soft Shield ferns are non-flowering but spread via rhizones beneath the earth. Polystichum Setiferum Herrenhausen is very hardy and tolerant of all weather conditions throughout Europe as would be expected of a plant native to Britain. It will tolerate most soils and some dryness but will burn and blister in direct sunlight. How To Use Polystichum Setiferum HerrenhausenSoft Shield Ferns are plants for shady areas. They cannot tolerate hot sun. This means they are perfect for shaded spaces such as under a tall fence, beneath a tree, or as part of a shady, damp mixed border. Shaded banks are ideal as soft shield ferns can grip onto almost vertical surfaces. They look stunning in shaded rock gardens and also thrive in posts if they are watered sufficiently. When grown in containers soft shields ferns can be transported around the garden to cover dead or unsightly areas for the majority of months. Wildlife gardens, woodland gardens and mixed borders benefit from soft shield ferns. When placed with other moisture loving shrubs their pointed, textured foliage contrasts nicely with bright blooms and rounded leaves. Try planting soft shield ferns with camellias, holly and other species of shiny ferns such as the evergreen Asplenium Scolopendrium Angustatum or Hart’s Tongue fern. To get the best from your soft shield fern you will need to select a shady and damp area. They need little care when planted in the correct conditions but will benefit from thick mulch in the spring. If needed you can cut back dead foliage to maintain a tidy appearance, or simply leave them as new foliage will appear soon after. Dead or damaged fronds can be removed at any point. Beautiful, native Soft Shield Ferns are a good choice for a shady garden or shady areas in any garden. They are low maintenance, structural and textural plants that provide a green splash of colour for the majority of the year.

Prunus Laurocerasus Genolia Laurel Instant Hedging Screens

Prunus Laurocerasus Genolia Laurel Instant Hedging Screens

Prunus Laurocerasus Genolia Laurel Instant Hedging ScreensThis new evergreen cherry laurel hybrid is a product of the Genolier Arboretum in Switzerland and is known to be particularly hardy. Prunus Laurocerasus Genolia (also known as Cherry Laurel Genolia or simply Genolia Laurel) has a narrow upright or fastigiate growth habit which is ideal where a tall dense hedging screen is required. These particular Prunus Laurocerasus Genolia plants have been nurtured and grown in rows of 5 or 6 plants and have been trained on a bamboo frame to maximise the screening effect. We refer to them as Instant Hedging Screens as they provide immediate privacy. These instant hedging screens are perfect when you want an instant hedging screen in a hurry. They are also very useful for narrow spaces as the row of plants is not overly wide. The Genolia Laurel is a fast-growing. When mature, these hedging screen generally stands 5 to 10 meters with a spread of only about 80 centimetres wide. The wonderfully slim, upright growth patterns of the Genolia Laurel are very strict from youth to maturity, which means that the hedge rarely requires clipping to maintain its appearance. That said, Prunus Laurocerasus Genolia will tolerate pruning well. Even when coppiced to almost ground level, it will still regrow with a strong upright habit. The stems and branches of the shrub are tough and do not readily break which makes it a good choice to stand up to wind. The evergreen foliage of the Genolia Laurel is eye-catching. The dark green leaves are elongated, somewhat narrow and glossy. When a leaf is crushed it releases the aroma of almonds. Flower buds appear on the shrub in the autumn months and winter, however, they do not open until late spring or early summer. The shrub produces fragrant white flowers that form large clusters. The flowers are a favourite of bees and butterflies. Following flowering, a limited number of red cherry-like fruits form that are generally rapidly consumed by songbirds and other woodland creatures. However, if the berries persist into autumn they turn a dark, blackish shade. These exceptionally tough Prunus Laurocerasus Genolia Hedging Screens grow in virtually any well-draining soil. They tolerates full sun or partial shade. This hardy hedging screen has the ability to cope with temperature extremes such as hot summers and snowy winters. During its first year of growth, it should be kept evenly moist to encourage root formation. However, once established, your hedging screen should withstand short periods of drought. The Genolia Laurel is an excellent, virtually carefree shrub to produce instant privacy screens quickly and effectively. Once established, it will quickly form a medium to tall hedge that provides year-round privacy.
