Tales of Hoffmann - E. T. A. Hoffmann - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

E.T.A. Hoffman''s wildly original fictions are some of the most unusual examples of German Romanticism''s dark passions, and the stories in Tales of Hoffman are selected and translated from the German with an introduction by R.J. Hollingdale in Penguin Classics. This selection of Hoffmann''s finest short stories vividly demonstrates his intense imagination and preoccupation with the supernatural, placing him at the forefront of both surrealism and the modern horror genre. Suspense dominates tales such as Mademoiselle de Scudery , in which an apprentice goldsmith and a female novelist find themselves caught up in a series of jewel thefts and murders. In the sinister The Sandman , famously used by Sigmund Freud to illustrate both his concept of the unheimlich , or ''uncanny'', and of Oedipal guilt, a young man''s sanity is tormented by fears about a mysterious chemist; while in The Choosing of a Bride a greedy father preys on the weaknesses of his daughter''s suitors. Master of the bizarre, Hoffman creates a sinister and unsettling world combining love and madness, black humour and bewildering illusion. This edition contains authoritative translations of Hoffman''s best stories. In his introduction, R.J. Hollingdale explores the background of these works and examines the duality of Hoffman''s life - a lawyer by day and creator of a world of fantasy by night.E.T.A Hoffmann (1776-1822) studied law and entered the Prussian civil service, but his over-riding ambition was to become a graphic artist and painter. He turned to fiction only in his thirties, living a Jekyll-and-Hyde existence as lawyer by day, author by night - and became one of the most influential authors of his time.If you enjoyed Tales of Hoffman , you might also like Jorge Luis Borges''s Fictions , available in Penguin Modern Classics.

The Golden Pot and Other Tales - E. T. A. Hoffmann - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Hoffmann is among the greatest and most popular of the German Romantics. This selection, while stressing the variety of his work, puts in the foreground those tales in which the real and the supernatural are brought into contact and conflict. The humour of these tales is a result of the incongruity of supernatural beings at large in an ostentatiously everyday world. They include The Golden Pot, recognized as Hoffmann''s masterpiece by himself and posterity; its spine-chilling companion tale, The Sandman, which Offenbach drew on for his opera Tales of Hoffmann, and which Freud examines in his essay `The Uncanny''; two longer and more elaborate fantasies, set respectively in Germany and Italy; and the late story, My Cousin''s Corner Window, which shows the powers of the imagination being applied to everyday urban life, and marks a transition in European literature generally from Romanticism to Realism.Ritchie Robertson''s detailed introduction places the stories in their intellectual and historical context and explores their compelling narrative complexities. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford''s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Other Hoffmann Sister - Ben Fergusson - Bog - Little, Brown Book Group - Plusbog.dk

Shortlisted for The Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year 2015 , Ben Fergusson''s critically acclaimed debut, The Spring of Kasper Meier , was the winner of the Betty Trask Prize 2015 and the HWA 2015 Debut Crown Award. The Other Hoffmann Sister is a gripping, evocative read about two sisters set in pre-WW1 Germany which will appeal to fans of The Essex Serpent b y Sarah Perry. For Ingrid Hoffmann the story of her sister''s disappearance began in their first weeks in Southwest Africa... Ingrid Hoffmann has always felt responsible for her sister Margarete and when their family moves to German Southwest Africa in 1902, her anxieties only increase. The casual racism that pervades the German community, the strange relationship between her parents and Baron von Ketz, from whom they bought their land, and the tension with the local tribes all culminate in tragedy when Baron von Ketz is savagely murdered. Baroness von Ketz and their son, Emil, flee with the Hoffmanns as the Baron''s attackers burn down the family''s farm. Both families return to Berlin and Ingrid''s concerns about Margarete are assuaged when she and Emil von Ketz become engaged on the eve of the First World War. But Margarete disappears on her wedding night at the von Ketz''s country house. The mystery of what happened to her sister haunts Ingrid, but as Europe descends into chaos, her hope of discovering the truth becomes ever more distant. After the war, in the midst of the revolution that brings down the Kaiser and wipes out the aristocracy that her family married into, Ingrid returns to the von Ketzes'' crumbling estate determined to find out what really happened to her sister.

Japanese Death Poems - Yoel Hoffmann - Bog - Tuttle Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Japanese Death Poems - Yoel Hoffmann - Bog - Tuttle Publishing - Plusbog.dk

"A wonderful introduction the Japanese tradition of jisei , this volume is crammed with exquisite, spontaneous verse and pity, often hilarious, descriptions of the eccentric and committed monastics who wrote the poems." — Tricycle: The Buddhist Review Although the consciousness of death is, in most cultures, very much a part of life, this is perhaps nowhere more true than in Japan, where the approach of death has given rise to a centuries-old tradition of writing jisei , or the "death poem." Such a poem is often written in the very last moments of the poet''s life. Hundreds of Japanese death poems, many with a commentary describing the circumstances of the poet''s death, have been translated into English here, the vast majority of them for the first time. Yoel Hoffmann explores the attitudes and customs surrounding death in historical and present-day Japan and gives examples of how these have been reflected in the nation''s literature in general. The development of writing jisei is then examined—from the longing poems of the early nobility and the more "masculine" verses of the samurai to the satirical death poems of later centuries. Zen Buddhist ideas about death are also described as a preface to the collection of Chinese death poems by Zen monks that are also included. Finally, the last section contains three hundred twenty haiku, some of which have never been assembled before, in English translation and romanized in Japanese.
