Efter mange besværligheder med vinterstorme og enorme mængder sne lykkes det at få isblokken med mammutten gravet fri af den frosne jord og fløjet til en underjordisk isgrotte. Her begynder optøningen af dyret, og da den er godt i gang, drømmer den ene af forskerne en nat, at mammutterne genopstår. I drømmen møder vi flokken, som også består af en vældig forstandig anfører med sin knap så forstandige unge, der skal til at lære alt om det barske liv i det sneklædte Sibirien. Vi følger flokken på vandring mod nord - og senere sydpå mod de varmere lande. Rejsen sydpå er forbundet med mange uventede farer i mødet med både rovdyr og stenaldermennesket.
