There is no good human life outside of a state, and the good state enables us to live well together – so says Constitutivism, the theory developed in this book. Reinvigorating Aristotelian ideas, the author asks in what sense citizens of modern, populous and pluralistic societies share a common good. While we can easily find examples of cooperation that benefit each member, such as insurances, the idea that persons could share a common good became puzzling with modernity – a puzzlement epitomised in Margaret Thatcher’s ‘What is society? There is no such thing!’ This puzzlement, the author argues, results from our profoundly modern understanding of rational actions, which we see as means toward outcomes. If we allow that not only outcomes but also histories and identities can be good reasons for actions, then it makes sense to see a person’s good and the common good of their political community as constitutive of one another, as Aristotle thought. Building on this idea, the author argues that in designing our institutions, we also give ourselves an identity – in other words, we constitute ourselves as persons.

Three forces are at work in reconstituting the citizen in this society: courts, politics, and markets. How has Canadian society actually been transformed? Is the state truly in retreat? Do individuals, in fact, have a fundamentally altered sense of their relationship to government and to each other? Have courts and markets supplanted representative politics regarding the expression of basic values? Must judicialized protection of human rights and minority interests necessarily mean a diminished concern for the common good on the part of representative politics? To what extent should markets and representative politics maintain a role in the protection of human rights and minority interests? Will representative politics ever hold the public trust again? Good Government? Good Citizens? responds to these questions. It does so by examining the altered roles of courts, politics, and markets over the last two decades. It then examines a number of areas to gauge the extent of the evidence regarding transformations that have occurred because of these changing roles. There are chapters on the First Peoples, cyberspace, education, and on an ageing Canada. The book concludes with reflections on the “good citizen” at the dawning of the new century. Essential good, or that which is good by nature, does not always align with our perceptions of the common good or with our immediate interests. Scott John Hammond sorts out the difference between essential Good and what we take to be good under the influence of the will as it pursues various interests and preferences. The Centrality of the Good: Reflections on Politics and Being follows Plato's understanding of the Good as the "object and cause of all knowledge" and the essence of all political activity. Much of the book is devoted to an examination of the relationship between the good and the right. In response to Rawls, it advances an understanding of the priority of the Good, and thus a notion that the existence of objective right is an extension of the essential good. It also reconsiders the relationship between politics and power, in the end rejecting power as the defining element of political activity. What makes political activity real is not the ability to command or apply force, but rather to discern the essential good and to work as a community of free citizens toward making Good in itself compatible, as a practical concern, with general perceptions of a common good. The Centrality of the Good thus suggests a different language of politics that considers the Good as the primus mobiles of all political and social life. Ultimately, a politics of care and commitment to the good of others is the essence of real political association; the closer politics comes to cultivating disinterest in the pursuit of narrow self-interest while encouraging commitment in the interests of others, the more it embraces what is truly essential to politics.

Most philosophers working in moral psychology and practical reason think that either the notion of "good" or the notion of "desire" have central roles to play in our understanding of intentional explanations and practical reasoning. However, philosophers disagree sharply over how we are supposed to understand the notions of "desire" and "good", how these notions relate, and whether both play a significant and independent role in practical reason. In particular, the "Guise of the Good" thesis - the view that desire (or perhaps intention, or intentional action) always aims at the good - has received renewed attention in the last twenty years. Can one have desire for things that the desirer does not perceive to be good in any, or form intentions to act in way that one does not deem to be good? Does the notion of good play any essential role in an account of deliberation or practical reason? Moreover, philosophers also disagree about the relevant notion of good. Is it a purely formal notion, or does it involve a substantive conception of the good? Is the primary notion, the notion of the good for a particular agent, or the notion of good simpliciter? Does the relevant notion of good make essential appeal to human nature, or would it in principle extend to all rational beings? While these questions are central in contemporary work in ethics, practical reason, and philosophy of action, they are not new; similar issues were discussed in the ancient period. This volume of essays aims to bring together "systematic" and more historically-oriented work on these issues.

This cheating has begun to severely undermine modernity''s economic and social institutions. Riker proposes that Heinz Kohut''s psychoanalytic understanding of the self can provide modernity with a naturalistic ground for saying why it is good to be good. Kohut sees the self as a dynamic, unconscious structure which, when coherent and actively engaged with the world, provides the basis for a heightened sense of lively flourishing. The key to the self''s development and sustained coherence is the presence of empathically responsive others—persons Kohut terms selfobjects. Riker argues that the best way to sustain vitalized selfobject relations in adulthood is by becoming an ethical human being.
