Tellurite Glasses Handbook - Raouf A.h. El Mallawany - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Tellurite Glasses Handbook: Physical Properties and Data, Second Edition covers the current dominant physical properties of this prototype glass system. Focusing on thermal, elastic, acoustic, electrical, and optical properties, this second edition incorporates the latest scientific data and up-to-date applications of tellurite glass. New Topics in the Second Edition - - Nanocomposites - Three-dimensional structural models - Novel glass-forming systems - Innovative ways to combine all physical properties simultaneously, creating new points for research - Addressing the knowledge gap among physicists, chemists, and material scientists in their understanding of tellurite glasses’ properties, this edition gathers essential thermal, mechanical, electrical, and optical data in one source. It emphasizes the physics and technology of twenty-first century processing, fabrication, and behavior of tellurite glass and glass-ceramic materials. It is the first and only comprehensive source of physical constants and properties of these unique noncrystalline solids. After an introductory chapter on the composition of tellurite glasses, the book explores elastic, acoustic, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. Each chapter includes basic theories on a particular physical property, related experimental techniques, and representative data. The book uniquely presents a compilation of scientific data from the last 60 years as well as practical and strategic applications based on the properties of tellurite glasses.

The Legacy of Harvey Cushing - - Bog - Thieme Medical Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

A lavishly illustrated book on Cushing's pioneering career Derived from Harvey Cushing's remarkable personal collection in the Brain Tumor Registry, The Legacy of Harvey Cushing: Profiles of Patient Care presents a stunning historical account of Cushing's surgical cases and research from 1905 to 1930. This beautifully illustrated book features 800 of Cushing's surgical drawings and photographs of patients and tumor specimens. Preserved untouched for sixty years in the Yale University Library, the images provide the earliest catalog of neurological and neuropathological disease and reveal the techniques employed by the founder of modern neurosurgery. The editors have carefully integrated these high-quality photographs and illustrations into a compelling narrative constructed from patients' hospital records and Cushing's meticulous notes at preoperative and postoperative stages of management. Discharge notes, letters from the family of patients, photographs of patients (years after surgery), and death reports further humanize each clinical case and speak to Cushing's lasting dedication to his patients. The book provides a glimpse of the extraordinary contribution that both Cushing and his patients made to the progress of neurological surgery in the twentieth century. This unique book will be prized by today's generation of neurological surgeons and neuropathologists. A co-publication of Thieme and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons

Creating Groups - Harvey J. Bertcher - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Creating Groups - Harvey J. Bertcher - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Offering innovative, useful guidelines for effectively composing new groups and modifying old ones, the long-awaited second edition of Harvey J. Bertcher′s Creating Groups has been updated, revised, and expanded. This redesigned new edition is unique in that it specifically deals with issues that arise in getting started and is extremely usable due it its liberal use of examples and programmed format. Easy-to-use and concise, this volume goes beyond the principles of group composition to describe the acts necessary to start a group, such as recruiting members, choosing among recruits, interviewing prospective members, arranging for the agency to be receptive to the group, and planning and conducting the first meetings. In addition, it has also been expanded to address factors of race and gender in groups, and the empowerment of potential members in the group composition process. "Harvey J. Bertcher and Frank F. Maple′s book with its innovative programmed instruction format, provides practitioners with the knowledge and skills required to create effective groups. It deals with the full range of issues involved in each step of the planning and decision-making process, from an initial recognition of the need for a group to the first meeting. Understanding the well-developed concepts and principles of practice is greatly enhanced by the creative use of examples of practice, presentation, and discussion of study questions and exercises that help the reader to apply the content to varied situation. This book is highly readable, well organized, and theoretically sound. It is a splendid contribution to the literature on social work with groups." --Helen Northern, University of Southern California

Physical Relativity - Harvey R. Brown - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Physical Relativity - Harvey R. Brown - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Physical Relativity explores the nature of the distinction at the heart of Einstein''s 1905 formulation of his special theory of relativity: that between kinematics and dynamics. Einstein himself became increasingly uncomfortable with this distinction, and with the limitations of what he called the ''principle theory'' approach inspired by the logic of thermodynamics. A handful of physicists and philosophers have over the last century likewise expressed doubts about Einstein''s treatment of the relativistic behaviour of rigid bodies and clocks in motion in the kinematical part of his great paper, and suggested that the dynamical understanding of length contraction and time dilation intimated by the immediate precursors of Einstein is more fundamental. Harvey Brown both examines and extends these arguments (which support a more ''constructive'' approach to relativistic effects in Einstein''s terminology), after giving a careful analysis of key features of the pre-history of relativity theory. He argues furthermore that the geometrization of the theory by Minkowski in 1908 brought illumination, but not a causal explanation of relativistic effects. Finally, Brown tries to show that the dynamical interpretation of special relativity defended in the book is consistent with the role this theory must play as a limiting case of Einstein''s 1915 theory of gravity: the general theory of relativity.Appearing in the centennial year of Einstein''s celebrated paper on special relativity, Physical Relativity is an unusual, critical examination of the way Einstein formulated his theory. It also examines in detail certain specific historical and conceptual issues that have long given rise to debate in both special and general relativity theory, such as the conventionality of simultaneity, the principle of general covariance, and the consistency or otherwise of the special theory with quantum mechanics. Harvey Brown'' s new interpretation of relativity theory will interest anyone working on these central topics in modern physics.
