Surgical Management in Snoring and Sleep-disordered Breathing - Rodolfo Lugo Saldana - Bog - Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition where the walls of the throat relax and narrow during sleep, interrupting normal breathing (NHS Choices). Surgical Management in Snoring and Sleep-Disordered Breathing is an illustrated guide to the diagnosis and treatment of patients who require surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea. Divided into 15 chapters, the book begins with sleep tests and diagnosis, upper airway exploration and guidance on classification and surgical prognosis of a patient with sleep-disordered breathing. Common modalities for exploring the upper airway, as well as techniques currently under development, are discussed in detail. Further chapters cover a range of surgical procedures. The closing chapters cover anaesthesiology, complications of obstructive sleep apnoea surgery, and the future of sleep-disordered breathing and snoring surgery. Surgical Management in Snoring and Sleep-Disordered Breathing is enhanced by 139 full colour images and illustrations, making this up-to-date and forward looking book an ideal resource for postgraduates, otolaryngologists, anaesthesiologists and surgeons. Key Points - Illustrated guide to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea - Covers diagnosis, surgical prognosis, and surgical procedures - Also covers anaesthesiology, complications of surgery, and possible future developments - 139 full colour images and illustrations

The Politics of Purim - Dr Jo Carruthers - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

The Politics of Purim - Dr Jo Carruthers - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

This book approaches the holiday of Purim as profane, freed to human use and ends, in order to consider the political legacy of the biblical story of Esther in festival and art works. Jo Carruthers explores carnival and synagogue practices, the purimshpil (Purim’s own dramatic genre) , illuminated Esther scrolls, as well as artworks by Botticelli, Millais and Jan Steen. The complex and astute interrogation of political life in such festival and artworks is analysed through theories of sovereignty, law, precarity and hospitality by key political thinkers such as Giorgio Agamben, Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, Judith Butler, Jacques Derrida, and Jacques Rancière. Carruthers considers different motifs of boundary conservation and dissolution, as a means of contemplating the political implications of Purim and the Esther story for diaspora politics. How is sovereignty aspired to and attained by marginalized and threatened communities? How can one respond to the ethical call of hospitality to relax sovereign boundaries whilst protecting and celebrating that which is exceptional? The practice of giving gifts, mishloach manos, offers a model of hospitality that together with Purim’s profane impulse is epitomized in the final chapter’s discussion of a 2018 Brooklyn purimshpil, that offers a riotous ridiculing of white supremacist rhetoric, norms of domination, capitalist inequalities, modern slavery and ablest identities and assumptions.

Transfer Learning through Embedding Spaces - Mohammad Rostami - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Transfer Learning through Embedding Spaces - Mohammad Rostami - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Recent progress in artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized our everyday life. Many AI algorithms have reached human-level performance and AI agents are replacing humans in most professions. It is predicted that this trend will continue and 30% of work activities in 60% of current occupations will be automated. This success, however, is conditioned on availability of huge annotated datasets to training AI models. Data annotation is a time-consuming and expensive task which still is being performed by human workers. Learning efficiently from less data is a next step for making AI more similar to natural intelligence. Transfer learning has been suggested a remedy to relax the need for data annotation. The core idea in transfer learning is to transfer knowledge across similar tasks and use similarities and previously learned knowledge to learn more efficiently. In this book, we provide a brief background on transfer learning and then focus on the idea of transferring knowledge through intermediate embedding spaces. The idea is to couple and relate different learning through embedding spaces that encode task-level relations and similarities. We cover various machine learning scenarios and demonstrate that this idea can be used to overcome challenges of zero-shot learning, few-shot learning, domain adaptation, continual learning, lifelong learning, and collaborative learning.

Eco-Stats: Data Analysis in Ecology - David I Warton - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Eco-Stats: Data Analysis in Ecology - David I Warton - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book introduces ecologists to the wonderful world of modern tools for data analysis, especially multivariate analysis. For biologists with relatively little prior knowledge of statistics, it introduces a modern, advanced approach to data analysis in an intuitive and accessible way. The book begins by reviewing some core principles in statistics, and relates common methods to the linear model, a general framework for modeling data where the response is continuous. This is then extended to discrete data using generalized linear models, to designs with multiple sampling levels via mixed models, and to situations where there are multiple response variables via model-based approaches to multivariate analysis. Along the way there is an introduction to: important principles in model selection; adaptations of the model to handle non-linearity and cyclical variables; dependence due to structured correlation in time, space or phylogeny; and design-based techniques for inference that can relax some of the modelling assumptions. It concludes with a range of advanced topics in model-based multivariate analysis relevant to the modern ecologist, including fourth corner, latent variable and copula models. Examples span a variety of applications including environmental monitoring, species distribution modeling, global-scale surveys of plant traits, and small field experiments on biological controls. Math Boxes throughout the book explain some of the core ideas mathematically for readers who want to delve deeper, and R code is used throughout. Accompanying code, data, and solutions to exercises can be found in the ecostats R package on CRAN.

Seeking Sanctuary - - Bog - Beta-Plus - Plusbog.dk

Seeking Sanctuary - - Bog - Beta-Plus - Plusbog.dk

According to New York based interior designer, life coach and meditation teacher Joshua Smith, “When your home is your sanctuary, there’s a big exhale when you walk through that front door. It nourishes your spirit, inspires your mind, and enhances your connection to yourself, your loved ones and the divine, however you might define that” (in Homes & Gardens, January 2023). For Shelby Deering, designer of the tranquil spaces of The Well (with locations in New York City, Washington, Miami, Costa Rica and Mexico), "Over the last few years, our homes have become more important than ever. Throughout the pandemic, we saw them function as offices, gyms, schools, restaurants — and, of course, our own little corners of the world where we were able to find relief from daily pressures and anxiety. Because of this shift, it’s no wonder that people have made efforts to refresh their living quarters to focus more on health, wellness and self-care. After all, when the environment around you feels like a calming refuge, those peaceful vibes can directly impact how you feel.” The 15 private residences presented in this beautiful book can all be called “sanctuaries” because they all seek to support and protect the well-being of their owners, families and guests. Everyone needs a happy place, a space to relax, unwind, and let the worries of everyday life melt away. Some may dream of white-sand beaches, while others may prefer cozy mountain chalets, or a meditative, decluttered wabi sabi interior in a cosmopolitan setting. Whether in Brazil, Sweden, Mexico, Crete, St. Barts, Spain or in Belgium - all over the world, people are searching for the ultimate comfort, safety and happiness in their own cocoon, their own protective environment.

Lanson Lectures in Bioethics (2016-2022) - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Lanson Lectures in Bioethics (2016-2022) - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Bioethical issues are practically urgent, politically divisive, and call for resolutions. They often involve questions that are perplexing, deep, and profound. To deal with them adequately requires philosophical tools and imagination. The Lanson Lectures in Bioethics were founded upon the belief that philosophical elucidation can clarify the nature of these difficult issues, and can lead to their resolution. The present volume collects the first five lectures delivered by five preeminent moral philosophers between 2016 and 2022. In the inaugural lecture, Jonathan Glover draws a distinction between two conceptions of dignity, and brings it to bear on the issues of assisted suicide, embryo research, and genetic choices. F. M. Kamm argues that doctors are morally permitted to intentionally cause death, or assist in its being intentionally caused, when either death is imminent anyway and intentionally causing it can alone stop the pain, or ifthe patient has already decided—not unreasonably—that death is his least bad option. Are smokers who contract lung cancer entitled to state-supported healthcare? T. M. Scanlon argues that the reasons that individuals have for wanting to have the opportunity to engage in activities involving risks need to be compared with the costs society has to bear to provide healthcare for those who suffer illness or injury as a result of these activities. Rejecting Strawson’s view that a psychiatrist can only “treat” an insane patient, Victor Tadros argues that it is often right to reason with (nonresponsible) mentally ill persons because a psychiatrist needs to see things from their perspectives, and that we should communicate to nonresponsible agents that their wrongdoing is a problem for them and for their victims. Peter Singer proposes solutions to the following questions: How to distribute scarce medical resources and vaccines ethically? Whether to relax the standard for volunteers willing to participate in vaccines research? How to compare the trade-off between saving lives and saving the economy regarding lockdowns? How to prevent pandemics in future? Each lecture is followed by a critical commentary by a moral philosophers or physician in Asia. Each commentary (except the inaugural lecture) is followed by a rejoinder.
