The Cord Keepers - Frank L. Salomon - Bog - Duke University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Cord Keepers - Frank L. Salomon - Bog - Duke University Press - Plusbog.dk

None of the world’s “lost writings” have proven more perplexing than the mysterious script in which the Inka Empire kept its records. Ancient Andean peoples encoded knowledge in knotted cords of cotton or wool called khipus . In The Cord Keepers , the distinguished anthropologist Frank Salomon breaks new ground with a close ethnography of one Andean village where villagers, surprisingly, have conserved a set of these enigmatic cords to the present day. The “quipocamayos,” as the villagers call them, form a sacred patrimony. Keying his reading to the internal life of the ancient kin groups that own the khipus, Salomon suggests that the multicolored cords, with their knots and lavishly woven ornaments, did not mimic speech as most systems of writing do, but instead were anchored in nonverbal codes. The Cord Keepers makes a compelling argument for a close intrinsic link between rituals and visual-sign systems. It indicates that, while Andean graphic representation may differ radically from familiar ideas of writing, it may not lie beyond the reach of scholarly interpretation. In 1994, Salomon witnessed the use of khipus as civic regalia on the heights of Tupicocha, in Peru’s central Huarochirí region. By observing the rich ritual surrounding them, studying the village’s written records from past centuries, and analyzing the khipus themselves, Salomon opens a fresh chapter in the quest for khipu decipherment. He draws on a decade’s field research, early colonial records, and radiocarbon and fiber analysis. Challenging the prevailing idea that the use of khipus ended under early Spanish colonial rule, Salomon reveals that these beautiful objects served, apparently as late as the early twentieth century, to document households’ contribution to their kin groups and these kin groups’ contribution to their village. The Cord Keepers is a major contribution to Andean history and, more broadly, to understandings of writing and literacy.

What a Life - Salomon Rettig - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

What a Life - Salomon Rettig - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

What a Life is a unique book that is part memoir, part historical chronicle, part a social psychological dissertation of the impact of a set of diverse social systems upon a single soul. It is the result of a lifetime of evidence-gathering, thought, and introspection. Salomon Rettig, professor emeritus at the Department of Psychology, Hunter College CUNY, was born into and subsequently experienced three radically different social, political, and economic systems of the twentieth century: Nazism, Neo-Marxism (the Israeli kibbutz), and the academic system of the United States of America. Now in his nineties, he attempts to compare this diverse set of experiences, their historical and political context, and their effect on him, especially as he has related to other people. The results are not very pretty. He watched Hitler come to power in his native Berlin and experienced the depersonalization of the Jewish population on the part of the Nazis, prior to escaping at the age of thirteen to an orphanage for Jewish Holocaust refugees in British Mandate Palestine. He subsequently worked on a kibbutz for ten years, subjugating his personal will to the will and interest of the collective. Finally, he arrived in the United States, completed his education, and embarked on a career as a professor of social psychology just as the United States entered a historic, post-war period of rapid, unprecedented economic growth. Was it the estrangement from his nuclear family at a very young age, assimilation into the commune of the kibbutz, or something else that led to his inability to relate to the other people in his life, even those as close to him as his first wife?

The Misery of International Law - Margot E. Salomon - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Misery of International Law - Margot E. Salomon - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Poverty, inequality, and dispossession accompany economic globalization. Bringing together three international law scholars, this book addresses how international law and its regimes of trade, investment, finance, as well as human rights, are implicated in the construction of misery, and how international law is producing, reproducing, and embedding injustice and narrowing the alternatives that might really serve humanity.Adopting a pluralist approach, the authors confront the unconscionable dimensions of the global economic order, the false premises upon which they are built, and the role of international law in constituting and sustaining them. Combining insights from radical critiques, political philosophy, history, and critical development studies, the book explores the pathologies at work in international economic law today. International law must abide by the requirements of justice if it is to make a call for compliance with it, but this work claims it drastically fails do so. In a legal order structured around neoliberal ideologies rather than principles of justice, every state can and does grab what it can in the economic sphere on the basis of power and interest, legally so and under colour of law. This book examines how international law on trade and foreign investment and the law and norms on global finance has been shaped to benefit the rich and powerful at the expense of others. It studies how a set of principles, in the form of a New International Economic Order (NIEO), that could have laid the groundwork for a more inclusive international law without even disrupting its market-orientation, were nonetheless undermined. As for international human rights law, it is under the terms of global capitalism that human rights operate. Before we can understand how human rights can create more just societies, we must first expose the ways in which they reflect capitalist society and how they assist in reproducing the underlying terms of immiseration that will continue to create the need for human rights protection. This book challenges conventional justifications of economic globalization and eschews false choices. It is not about whether one is "for" or "against" international trade, foreign investment, or global finance. The issue is to resolve how, if we are to engage in trade, investment, and finance, we do so in a manner that is accountable to persons whose lives are affected by international law. The deployment of human rights for their part must be considered against the ubiquity of neoliberal globalization under law, and not merely as a discrete, benevolent response to it.

Portfolio Indexing - Harold Hutchinson - Bog - John Wiley & Sons Inc - Plusbog.dk

The dominant paradigm in modern-day fund management remains the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). Originally developed in the 1960s as an explanatory and predictive model of capital market behaviour, it has subsequently acquired enormous significance in many fund-management institutions. "Harold Hutchinson''s Portfolio Indexing is a long-overdue theoretical and practical perspective on the ''managers versus trackers'' debate. He concludes that the indexing solution to risk management is flawed and that individual judgment will always have a proper role to play in investment. This much-needed book will hopefully help to stop the current steam-rolling move of the fund management industry towards indexing in its tracks, and encourage a more balanced view of the benefits of the active manager, especially in volatile or falling markets." Phillip Keane, Director, Industrial Bank of Japan Asset Management International Ltd "Portfolio Indexing challenges the growing consensus in favour of portfolio indexing as the optimal investment strategy. His devastating criticisms of the theoretical foundations underlying indexing, and his plea for a more modest inductive approach to portfolio management, have huge and as yet untapped implications for the asset management industry." Dr Andrew Allan, Vice President, Salomon Smith Barney Professionals, students and amateur investors alike will profit from this enjoyable tract on how to maintain and navigate vehicles of investment.

Maimon's Essay on a New Logic or Theory of Thinking - Timothy Franz - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Maimon's Essay on a New Logic or Theory of Thinking - Timothy Franz - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

This is the first English translation of Salomon Maimon''s Essay on a New Logic or Theory of Thinking, originally published in Berlin in 1794. Maimon came from an impoverished yet culturally rich Lithuanian Jewish background to write brilliantly speculative philosophy in Germany in the immediate wake of Immanuel Kant''s revolutionary Critique of Pure Reason. His passionate search for the truth quickly led him to try to complete Kant''s conceptual system in ways that inspired Fichte''s philosophy of the transcendental self and anticipated Schelling''s and Hegel''s philosophies of the world-soul. However, Maimon grew beyond these initial ideas to develop a sophisticated philosophy of reflection. He argued that philosophical knowledge must arise from reflection on the principles of valid cognition. In the New Logic, he conducts this reflection and develops from it systematic accounts of logic, cognition, scientific methodology, and metaphysics. He presents it as a unified improvement of Kant''s Critique. Maimon also based his mature philosophies of ethics, natural rights, aesthetics, and religion on this work.Timothy Franz translates the New Logic along with the Letters of Philalethes to Aenesidemus, in which Maimon imagined conversations with his contemporaries, two hostile reviews which Maimon vigorously annotated, and relevant letters to Kant, Reinhold, and Fichte. Franz prefaces the text with a new history of Maimon''s intellectual development, an introduction that relates the New Logic to contemporary Kant scholarship, and a detailed philosophical commentary that attempts to reconcile Maimon''s idiosyncratically disjointed writing style with his underlying systematic vision, making the New Logic available for further study.

For the Love of Metaphysics - Karin Nisenbaum - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

For the Love of Metaphysics - Karin Nisenbaum - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

In his Critique of Pure Reason, Kant argued that human reason is inherently conflicted, because it demands a form of unconditioned knowledge which is unattainable; his solution to this conflict of reason relies on the idea that reason''s quest for the unconditioned can only be realized practically. Karin Nisenbaum recommends viewing this conflict of reason, and Kant''s solution to this conflict, as the central problem shaping the contours of post-Kantian German Idealism. She contends that the rise and fall of German Idealism is to be told as a story about the different interpretations, appropriations, and radicalization of Kant''s prioritizing of the practical. The first part of the book explains why Kant''s critics and followers came to understand the aim of Kant''s critical philosophy in light of the conflict of reason. According to Nisenbaum, F. H. Jacobi and Salomon Maimon set the stage for the reception of Kant''s critical philosophy by conceiving its aim in terms of meeting reason''s demand for unconditioned knowledge, and by understanding the conflict of reason as a conflict between thinking and acting, or knowing and willing. The manner in which the post-Kantian German Idealists radicalized Kant''s prioritizing of the practical is the central topic of the second part of the book, which focuses on works by J.G. Fichte and F.W.J. Schelling. The third part clarifies why, in order to solve the conflict of reason, Schelling and Rosenzweig developed the view that human experience is grounded in three irreducible elements--God, the natural world, and human beings--which relate in three temporal dimensions: Creation, Revelation, and Redemption.
