This book examines Greek vase-paintings that depict humorous, burlesque, and irreverent images of Greek mythology and the gods. Many of the images present the gods and heroes as ridiculous and ugly. While the narrative content of some images may appear to be trivial, others address issues that are deeply serious. When placed against the background of the religious beliefs and social frameworks from which they spring, these images allow us to explore questions relating to their meaning in particular communities. Throughout, we see indications that Greek vase-painters developed their own comedic narratives and visual jokes. The images enhance our understanding of Greek society in just the same way as their more sober siblings in ''serious'' art.

This book opens up a neglected chapter in the reception of Athenian drama, especially comedy; and it gives stage-centre to a particularly attractive and entertaining series of vase-paintings, which have been generally regarded as marginal curiosities. These are the so-called `phlyax vases'', nearly all painted in the Greek cities of South Italy in the period 400 t0 360 BC. Up till now, they have been taken to reflect some kind of local folk-theatre, but Oliver Taplin, prompted especially by three that have only been published in the last twelve years, argues that most, if not all, reflect Athenian comedy of the sort represented by Aristophanes.This bold thesis opens up questions of the relation of tragedy as well as comedy to vase-painting, the cultural climate of the Greek cities in Italy, and the extent to which Athenians were aware of drama as a potential `export''. It also enriches appreciation of many key aspects of Aristophanic comedy: its metatheatre and self-reference, its use of stage-action and stage-props, its unabashed indecency, and its polarised relationship, even rivalry, with tragedy. The book has assembled thirty-six photographs of vase-paintings. Many are printed here for the first time outside specialist publications that are not readily accessible.

Spectators at the sides of narrative vase paintings have long been at the margins of scholarship, but a study of their appearance shows that they provide a model for the ancient viewing experience. They also reflect social and gender roles in archaic Athens. This study explores the phenomenon of spectators through a database built from a census of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, which reveals that the figures flourished in Athenian vase painting during the last two-thirds of the sixth century BCE. Using models developed from psychoanalysis and the theory of the gaze, ritual studies, and gender studies, Stansbury-O''Donnell shows how these ''spectators'' emerge as models for social and gender identification in the archaic city, encoding in their gestures and behavior archaic attitudes about gender and status.

The author used the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling to verify the research hypotheses. Readers will acquire knowledge about HRM practices in organizations in which the overwhelming ownership capital belongs to MNCs headquartered in Central Europe. The research findings presented confirm the positive impact that HRM activities have on the results of this type of enterprise in such areas as finance, quality, innovation and HRM itself. The research also sheds light on the new, interesting regularities identified in this regard, e.g. the perception of human factor as a competitive factor. What activities did the women of ancient Greece perform in the sphere of ritual, and what were the meanings of such activities for them and their culture? By offering answers to these questions, this study aims to recover and reconstruct an important dimension of the lived experience of ancient Greek women. A comprehensive and sophisticated investigation of the ritual roles of women in ancient Greece, it draws on a wide range of evidence from across the Greek world, including literary and historical texts, inscriptions, and vase-paintings, to assemble a portrait of women as religious and cultural agents, despite the ideals of seclusion within the home and exclusion from public arenas that we know restricted their lives. As she builds a picture of the extent and diversity of women's ritual activity, Barbara Goff shows that they were entrusted with some of the most important processes by which the community guaranteed its welfare. She examines the ways in which women's ritual activity addressed issues of sexuality and civic participation, showing that ritual could offer women genuinely alternative roles and identities even while it worked to produce wives and mothers who functioned well in this male-dominated society. Moving to more speculative analysis, she discusses the possibility of a women's subculture focused on ritual and investigates the significance of ritual in women's poetry and vase-paintings that depict women. She also includes a substantial exploration of the representation of women as ritual agents in fifth-century Athenian drama.

Bodil Bødtker-Næss er en bog om en enestående kunsthåndværker og hendes glæde ved materialer, strukturer, farver, former og rum. Bodil Bødtker-Næss var en meget talentfuld væver, der med nye tilgange til det tekstile udtryk og stor alsidighed i sit arbejde, fik sat et stort aftryk på dansk tekstilkunst, trods hendes tidlige død i 1988 i en alder af 45 år. Bodil beskriver selv sin metode på fineste vis: " I mine arbejder lægger jeg stor vægt på et samspil og en naturlig sammensmeltning af håndværk, funktion, teknik, materiale, rytme, struktur og farve, således at textilet aldrig kun bliver en reproduceret tegning eller kun en formel teknisk frembringelse." Bogen er skabt af væver Gitte-Annette Knudsen som var i værkstedslære hos Bodil Bødtker-Næss og efterfølgende havde Bodil som underviser på Skolen for Brugskunst. Gitte-Annette Knudsen udgav i 2020 et tilsvarende værk om væveren Vibeke Klint.

One of the first personalities to be identified in Etruscan art, the Micali Painter (sixth century BC), is also one of the liveliest of ancient vase-painters, and the leading exponent of a black-figure style that owed more to native imagination than the influence of imported Athenian vases. He is named after Guiseppe Micali (1769-1844), who recognized the hoard of vases discussed in this book as being the work of one man. This book presents the first full stylistic study of the painter, together with a catalogue of his surviving work (some two hundred pieces) and an account of his development and influence within the course of archaic Etruscan painting. Much of the material is hitherto unpublished, and the illustrations have been chosen to furnish a full documentation of the Micali Painter''s range and originality.
