The Postmodern Humanism of Philip K. Dick - Jason P. Vest - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

The Postmodern Humanism of Philip K. Dick - Jason P. Vest - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

From his 1952 short story "Roog" to the novels The Divine Invasion and VALIS, few authors have had as great of an impact in the latter half of the 20th century as Philip K. Dick. In The Postmodern Humanism of Philip K. Dick, Jason Vest explores the work of this prolific, subversive, and mordantly funny science-fiction writer. He examines how Dick adapted the conventions of science fiction and postmodernism to reflect humanist concerns about the difficulties of maintaining identity, agency, and autonomy in the latter half of the 20th century. In addition to an extensive analysis of the novel Now Wait for Last Year, Vest makes intellectually provocative comparisons between Dick and the works of Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, and Italo Calvino. He offers a detailed examination of Dick''s literary relationship to all three authors, illuminating similarities between Dick and Kafka that have not previously been discussed, as well as similarities between Dick and Borges that scholars frequently note but fail to explore in detail. Like Kafka, Borges, and Calvino, Dick employs fantastic, unreal, and visionary fiction to reflect the disruptions, dislocations, and depressing realities of twentieth-century life. By comparing him to these other writers, Vest demonstrates that Dick''s fiction is a fascinating barometer of postmodern American life even as it participates in an international tradition of visionary literature.

Sovereign Wisdom - Jennifer Vest - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book proposes a methodology for formulating a sovereign field of Academic Native American Philosophy. In this groundbreaking metaphilosophical work, the author identifies several recurrent themes in Indigenous North American cultures and argues that such themes can form the foundation of a unique field of philosophy. Creatively drawing on a diverse collection of Native voices from a wide variety of disciplines such as philosophy, religion, literature and oratory, this innovative book promises to be a resource for philosophers and other scholars seeking to engage in discourses centering Native conceptual analyses. "Dr. Vest has written a perceptive understandable study about the challenge to accept Native American philosophy and she explains thoroughly what it is. Written from the heart, she shares her insightful understandings of Native life and the complexities of tribal worldviews. If you want to know about Indians, this is a must read." –Donald L. Fixico, Muscogee, Seminole, Shawnee, and Sac and Fox, and author of The American Indian Mind in a Linear World "Jennifer Vest has produced the most comprehensive, compelling, and elegant treatise of Native American Philosophy that I have seen to date. Phenology of Ecosystem Processes - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Phenology of Ecosystem Processes - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Terrestrial carbon balance is uncertain at the regional and global scale. A significant source of variability in mid-latitude ecosystems is related to the timing and duration of phenological phases. Spring phenology, in particular, has disproportionate effects on the annual carbon balance. However, the traditional phenological indices that are based on leaf-out and flowering times of select indicator species are not universally amenable for predicting the temporal dynamics of ecosystem carbon and water exchange. Phenology of Ecosystem Processes evaluates current applications of traditional phenology in carbon and H2O cycle research, as well as the potential to identify phenological signals in ecosystem processes themselves. The book summarizes recent progress in the understanding of the seasonal dynamics of ecosystem carbon and H2O fluxes, the novel use of various methods (stable isotopes, time-series, forward and inverse modeling), and the implications for remote sensing and global carbon cycle modeling. Each chapter includes a literature review, in order to present the state-of-the-science in the field and enhance the book''s usability as an educational aid, as well as a case study to exemplify the use and applicability of various methods. Chapters that apply a specific methodology summarize the successes and challenges of particular methods for quantifying the seasonal changes in ecosystem carbon, water and energy fluxes. The book will benefit global change researchers, modelers, and advanced students.

Applied Cloud Deep Semantic Recognition - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the research on anomaly detection with respect to context and situational awareness that aim to get a better understanding of how context information influences anomaly detection. In each chapter, it identifies advanced anomaly detection and key assumptions, which are used by the model to differentiate between normal and anomalous behavior. When applying a given model to a particular application, the assumptions can be used as guidelines to assess the effectiveness of the model in that domain. Each chapter provides an advanced deep content understanding and anomaly detection algorithm, and then shows how the proposed approach is deviating of the basic techniques. Further, for each chapter, it describes the advantages and disadvantages of the algorithm. The final chapters provide a discussion on the computational complexity of the models and graph computational frameworks such as Google Tensorflow and H2O because it is an important issue in real application domains. This book provides a better understanding of the different directions in which research has been done on deep semantic analysis and situational assessment using deep learning for anomalous detection, and how methods developed in one area can be applied in applications in other domains. This book seeks to provide both cyber analytics practitioners and researchers an up-to-date and advanced knowledge in cloud based frameworks for deep semantic analysis and advanced anomaly detection using cognitive and artificial intelligence (AI) models.

Testing of Body Armor Materials - Board On Army Science And Technology - Bog - National Academies Press - Plusbog.dk

Testing of Body Armor Materials - Board On Army Science And Technology - Bog - National Academies Press - Plusbog.dk

In 2009, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released the report Warfighter Support: Independent Expert Assessment of Army Body Armor Test Results and Procedures Needed Before Fielding, which commented on the conduct of the test procedures governing acceptance of body armor vest-plate inserts worn by military service members. This GAO report, as well as other observations, led the Department of Defense Director, Operational Test & Evaluation, to request that the National Research Council (NRC) Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences conduct a three-phase study to investigate issues related to the testing of body armor materials for use by the U.S. Army and other military departments. Phase I and II resulted in two NRC letter reports: one in 2009 and one in 2010. This report is Phase III in the study. Testing of Body Armor Materials: Phase III provides a roadmap to reduce the variability of clay processes and shows how to migrate from clay to future solutions, as well as considers the use of statistics to permit a more scientific determination of sample sizes to be used in body armor testing. This report also develops ideas for revising or replacing the Prather study methodology, as well as reviews comments on methodologies and technical approaches to military helmet testing. Testing of Body Armor Materials: Phase III also considers the possibility of combining various national body armor testing standards.
