Fashion & Merchandising Fads - Frank Hoffmann - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Fashion & Merchandising Fads - Frank Hoffmann - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Fads by nature and by definition are hard to capture, yet Hoffmann and Bailey have captured over one hundred of the passing fashion fancies and merchandising miracles during America’s short history in their latest collection of fads, Fashion & Merchandising Fads. Life devoid of fads is impossible to imagine, and the fads that do enter our lives become vehicles for amusement upon retrospection. How long any fad stays in vogue is anybody’s guess, but Hoffmann and Bailey have again found those fads that somehow took root and flourished, if only for a short period of time, in America. Concise entries describe each fad from its beginning to its demise and its devout followers. Readers are sure to recognize many of the trends and fads collected in Fashion & Merchandising Fads. A browse through the contents will have readers smiling as they remember - - Alex, Stroh’s Beer-Drinking Dog and “Baby On Board” Stickers - - Barbie Dolls and Celebrity Perfumes - - Convertibles, Digital Watches, and Drive-In Banking - - Garfield, G. I. Joe, and Handbags for Men - - Knickers and Matchbox Cars - - The Model T and the Mustang - - Paper Dolls and Rubik’s Cube - - Silly Putty, the Slinky, and Synthetics in Clothes - - Top Hats, the Trilby, and Twiggy - - VCRs, Yuppies, and Zubaz - Each fad featured in Fashion & Merchandising Fads is examined thoroughly and concisely by the authors. They look at the historical setting, how the trend became popular, and the people most fascinated and involved with the trend. References follow each entry to make further reading on each fad a relatively easy task for those intrigued by fads. As fads enter and encompass society for a period of time, this collection of fads, arranged alphabetically, is sure to captivate readers from beginning to end, or, in a world of fads, from the A-2 Flight Jacket to the Zipper.

Graveyard Poetry - Eric Parisot - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Graveyard Poetry - Eric Parisot - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

While immensely popular in the eighteenth century, current critical wisdom regards graveyard poetry as a short-lived fad with little lasting merit. In the first book-length study of this important poetic mode, Eric Parisot suggests, to the contrary, that graveyard poetry is closely connected to the mid-century aesthetic revision of poetics. Graveyard poetry''s contribution to this paradigm shift, Parisot argues, stems from changing religious practices and their increasing reliance on printed material to facilitate private devotion by way of affective and subjective response. Coupling this perspective with graveyard poetry’s obsessive preoccupation with death and salvation makes visible its importance as an articulation or negotiation between contemporary religious concerns and emerging aesthetics of poetic practice. Parisot reads the poetry of Robert Blair, Edward Young and Thomas Gray, among others, as a series of poetic experiments that attempt to accommodate changing religious and reading practices and translate religious concerns into parallel reconsiderations of poetic authority, agency, death and afterlife. Making use of an impressive body of religious treatises, sermons and verse that ground his study in a precise historical moment, Parisot shows graveyard poetry''s strong ties to seventeenth-century devotional texts, and most importantly, its influential role in the development of late eighteenth-century sentimentalism and Romanticism.

Service-User Research in Health and Social Care - Hugh Mclaughlin - Bog - Sage Publications Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Service-User Research in Health and Social Care - Hugh Mclaughlin - Bog - Sage Publications Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This book represents a major contribution to the development and increasingly accepted importance of involving service users in research. It argues that this development is neither a fad nor a cure-all, and highlights the strengths, weaknesses, benefits and costs of the approach. It is the first text to analyze the involvement of service users from the conception of a research idea to the finish of the project. The author critically considers why service users even bother getting involved, and goes on to explore ethical issues, covering key topics such as: - the practice of service-user research; research conception, recruitment, training, development of research tools, data collection, analysis, writing up, dissemination and endings - barriers to involvement and the limitations of service-user research, with practical advice on how these can be addressed - both sameness and difference in relation to involving young people in research - alternative futures for involving service users in research. Using reflexive questions and practical examples to challenge the reader to consider his/her own position in relation to these issues, this book should occupy a central place on the shelves of all undergraduate health and social welfare students. It is also crucial reading for those studying postgraduate professional qualifications and research methods, and for practitioner researchers and policy staff considering the best ways of undertaking meaningful service user involvement.

Women and the Victorian Occult - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Women and the Victorian Occult - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Increasingly, contemporary scholarship reveals the strong connection between Victorian women and the world of the nineteenth-century supernatural. Women were intrinsically bound to the occult and the esoteric from mediums who materialised spirits to the epiphanic experiences of the New Woman, from theosophy to telepathy. This volume addresses the various ways in which Victorian women expressed themselves and were constructed by the occult through a broad range of texts. By examining the roles of women as automatic writing mediums, spiritualists, authors, editors, theosophists, socialists and how they interpreted the occult in their life and work, the contributors in this edition return to sensation novels, ghost stories, autobiographies, séances and fashionable magazines to access the visible and invisible worlds of Victorian life. The variety of texts analysed by the authors in this collection demonstrates the many interpretations of the occult in nineteenth-century culture and the ways that women used supernatural imagery and language to draw attention to issues that bore immediate implications on their own lives. Either by catering for the fad of ghost stories or by giving public trance speeches women harnessed the metaphorical and financial forces of the supernatural. As the articles in this book demonstrate the occult was after all a female affair. This book was published as a special issue of Women''s Writing .

Discourse and the Other - W. Lawrence Hogue - Bog - Duke University Press - Plusbog.dk

Discourse and the Other - W. Lawrence Hogue - Bog - Duke University Press - Plusbog.dk

The central thesis of Lawrence Hogue's book is that criticism of Afro-American literature has left out of account the way in which ideological pressures dictate the canon. This fresh approach to the study of the social, ideological, and political dynamics of the Afro-American literary text in the twentieth century, based on the Foucauldian concept of literature as social institution, examines the universalization that power effects, how literary texts are appropriated to meet ideological concerns and needs, and the continued oppression of dissenting voices.Hogue presents an illuminating discussion of the publication and review history of "major" and neglected texts. He illustrates the acceptance of texts as exotica, as sociological documents, or as carriers of sufficient literary conventions to receive approbation. Although the sixties movement allowed the text to move to the periphery of the dominant ideology, providing some new myths about the Afro-American historical past, this marginal position was subsequently sabotaged, co-opted, or appropriated (Afros became a fad; presidents gave the soul handshake; the hip-talking black was dressing one style and talking another.)This study includes extended discussion of four works; Ernest J. Gaines's The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, Alice Walker's The Third Life of Grange Copeland, Albert Murray's Train Whistle Guitar, and Toni Morrison's Sula. Hogue assesses the informing worldviews of each and the extent and nature of their acceptance by the dominant American cultural apparatus.

Reading Chican@ Like a Queer - Sandra K. Soto - Bog - University of Texas Press - Plusbog.dk

Reading Chican@ Like a Queer - Sandra K. Soto - Bog - University of Texas Press - Plusbog.dk

A race-based oppositional paradigm has informed Chicano studies since its emergence. In this work, Sandra K. Soto replaces that paradigm with a less didactic, more flexible framework geared for a queer analysis of the discursive relationship between racialization and sexuality. Through rereadings of a diverse range of widely discussed writers—from Américo Paredes to Cherríe Moraga—Soto demonstrates that representations of racialization actually depend on the sexual and that a racialized sexuality is a heretofore unrecognized organizing principle of Chican@ literature, even in the most unlikely texts. Soto gives us a broader and deeper engagement with Chican@ representations of racialization, desire, and both inter- and intracultural social relations. While several scholars have begun to take sexuality seriously by invoking the rich terrain of contemporary Chicana feminist literature for its portrayal of culturally specific and historically laden gender and sexual frameworks, as well as for its imaginative transgressions against them, this is the first study to theorize racialized sexuality as pervasive to and enabling of the canon of Chican@ literature. Exemplifying the broad usefulness of queer theory by extending its critical tools and anti-heteronormative insights to racialization, Soto stages a crucial intervention amid a certain loss of optimism that circulates both as a fear that queer theory was a fad whose time has passed, and that queer theory is incapable of offering an incisive, politically grounded analysis in and of the current historical moment.

Lotus Laurie Kang: In Cascades - - Bog - Hurtwood Press - Plusbog.dk

Lotus Laurie Kang: In Cascades - - Bog - Hurtwood Press - Plusbog.dk

Canadian artist Lotus Laurie Kang’s first book delves into the political and emotional forces at play in her installations and photography. Lotus Laurie Kang’s In Cascades is created to accompany her exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery, London, bringing together two never-before-seen photographic series; concrete poetry by the award-winning CAConrad; an insightful interview with Kang conducted by CAConrad; and an essay by writer Estelle Hoy. These contributions feature alongside a foreword by Zoé Whitley, Director of Chisenhale Gallery, and Matthew Hyland, Executive Director of CAG, Vancouver, with essays by Amy Jones, the exhibition’s curator, and Victoria Sung, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive’s Senior Curator. ‘Working across sculpture, photography, installation and drawing, the artist uses her acute sensitivity to process and site to reflect on bodies, identities, memories, and histories.’ - E-Flux ‘Kang’s visceral works begin with the permeability and vulnerability of bodies, identities and personal histories, states of flux echoed in the artist’s use of unstable and persistently sensitive materials.’ - FAD Magazine ‘The organic, carnal feel to the work makes sense. Kang, an identical twin who works in photography, sculpture and installation, is clearly interested in the ever-morphing human body and issues of identity... [Kang’s] work morphs with the day’s light, moving between opacity and translucence, at times monochromatic and other times featuring bleeding color blocks, like a Rothko painting.’ - LA Times on Kong's 2022 artist-in-residence project at Horizon Art Foundation
