GPs, Politics and Medical Professional Protest in Britain, 1880–1948 - Chris Locke - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This book charts the journey of British General Practitioners (GPs) towards professional self-realisation through the development of a political consciousness manifested in a series of bruising encounters with government. GPs are an essential part of the social fabric of modern Britain but as a group have always felt undervalued, clashing with successive governments over the terms on which they offered their services to the public. Explaining the background to these disputes and the motives of GPs from a sociological perspective, this research casts new light on some defining moments in the creation of the modern British state, from National Health Insurance to the National Health Service, and the history of the British medical profession. It examines these events from the point of view of the professionals intimately involved in and affected by them, using both established sources, like Ministry of Health records, an in-depth analysis of rarely studied records of professional bodies, and previously unresearched archive material. The result is a fascinating account of conflict and cooperation, and of heroic, and less-than-heroic, defiance of political authority, involving interactions between complex personalities and competing ideologies. Scholarly yet readable, this book will be of interest to the general reader as much as to medical practitioners and historians.

The Global Positioning System and ArcGIS - Michael Kennedy - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Since the publication of the bestselling second edition of The Global Positioning System and GIS , the use of GPS as an input for GIS has evolved from a supporting analysis tool to become an essential part of real-time management tools in wide-ranging fields. Continued technological advances and decreased costs have altered the GPS vendor landscape significantly and opened the door to an array of receiver and software options. Retaining the in-depth description that made the previous edition so popular, The Global Positioning System and ArcGIS, Third Edition has expanded its coverage to review the capabilities and features common to most receivers. While it emphasizes Trimble and Magellan hardware and Trimble TerraSync and ESRI ArcPad software to capture data, the text’s broadened coverage makes it useful with virtually any hardware/software packages, so readers will be able to collect GPS data and install it in ArcGIS—regardless of the data capture mechanism. Covering the latest developments in this emerging field, the third edition has been updated to include: - - New information on automated data collection - Updates to the conversion of GPS data into GIS form with ArcGIS Desktop (v. 9.3) as well as ESRI software - An examination of differential correction and improvements in accuracy of collected data - Additional emphasis on ArcMap and Pathfinder Office - Illustrations using ArcMap to combine GPS data with other data sets including raster DRGs, DOQs, DEMs, and various vector data sets Using a top-down approach, each chapter begins with a theoretical overview followed by self-study exercises and projects that provide step-by-step guidance on applying the concepts using GPS hardware or a PC. The text includes downloadable resources with GPS data sets for exercises in Trimble SSF and ESRI shapefile formats, plus other valuable learning resources. Solutions manual available upon qualified course adoption

Machine Learning for Indoor Localization and Navigation - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Machine Learning for Indoor Localization and Navigation - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

While GPS is the de-facto solution for outdoor positioning with a clear sky view, there is no prevailing technology for GPS-deprived areas, including dense city centers, urban canyons, buildings and other covered structures, and subterranean facilities such as underground mines, where GPS signals are severely attenuated or totally blocked. As an alternative to GPS for the outdoors, indoor localization using machine learning is an emerging embedded and Internet of Things (IoT) application domain that is poised to reinvent the way we navigate in various indoor environments. This book discusses advances in the applications of machine learning that enable the localization and navigation of humans, robots, and vehicles in GPS-deficient environments. The book explores key challenges in the domain, such as mobile device resource limitations, device heterogeneity, environmental uncertainties, wireless signal variations, and security vulnerabilities. Countering these challenges can improve theaccuracy, reliability, predictability, and energy-efficiency of indoor localization and navigation. The book identifies severalnovel energy-efficient, real-time, and robust indoor localization techniques that utilize emerging deep machine learning and statistical techniques to address the challenges for indoor localization and navigation. In particular, the book:Provides comprehensive coverage of the application of machine learning to the domain of indoor localization;Presents techniques to adapt and optimize machine learning models for fast, energy-efficient indoor localization;Covers design and deployment of indoor localization frameworks on mobile, IoT, and embedded devices in real conditions.

The New GP's Handbook - Peter Davies - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

General Practice has never been an easy occupation. In the past there were some clear structures and routes for new GPs to take. You could expect to join a practice and progress through the ranks, growing in seniority and confidence. You might have been informally mentored by one of the older colleagues; learning management and business skills gradually. It is no longer like this. The market has changed, the range of options is wider, and the way through the labyrinth is far from clear. You might find yourself confused and overwhelmed by all the new opportunities, possibilities and prospects. This book helps to clarify uncertainties and guide you towards the right path. It offers ways to formulate strategies when planning your career and maps out the landscape of general practice, enabling you to make, confident and informed decisions about your professional future. Supporting the initiative of First5(R), The New GP''s Handbook is highly recommended for newly qualified GPs who will find it answers so many of their questions and helps make the first five years (and beyond) in general practice more understandable, productive and enjoyable. Experienced GPs too, will find the guide invaluable as a current, general overview. General practice is an exciting and rewarding career which provides a host of opportunities for new GPs entering the profession today. Finding the right job, achieving a good work-life balance and developing a culture of lifelong learning are vital not only for the fulfilment of new GPs themselves but for the future of the profession. This book will help you achieve these objectives. Clare J Taylor, in the Foreword
