Changing Face of Jewish and Christian Worship in North America - - Bog - University of Notre Dame Press - Plusbog.dk

The Making of Jewish and Christian Worship , volume 1 of Two Liturgical Traditions , surveyed the origins and growth of Christian and Jewish liturgy from the first century of the common era until our time. Volume 2, The Changing Face of Jewish and Christian Worship in North America , follows up with an examination of the recent revolution in Jewish and Christian liturgies. The book reflects the particular role of North America in the worldwide experiment in liturgical renewal. The introductory essay inquires, What is a liturgical tradition? Part 1 (Liturgical Traditions and Theologies of "the Other'''') is a self-conscious reflection on how Jewish and Christian attitudes toward each other have been expressed in the forms of each tradition''s worship. All six of the authors in Part 2 (American Reform or Second Reformation?) have been intimately involved with current liturgical editing and write firsthand accounts of what they think they and their colleagues have accomplished in the new Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish liturgical books. Part 3 (Critiquing Liturgical Reforms) addresses the question of theology, feminist theory, and poetics against which the liturgical works themselves must be judged. The conclusion of this volume looks forward: Where are our traditions heading? A reconsideration of liturgical traditions in general against the backdrop of case studies and critiques, this book reevaluates the challenge posed to Jews and Christians alike as they aspire to reshape, yet retain, the liturgical traditions they have inherited. Contributors include: Lawrence A. Hoffman, Paul F. Bradshaw, Samuel E. Karff, John Gurrieri, Kathleen Hughes, Eugene Brand, Charles P. Price, Hoyt L. Hickman, Jules Harlow, Stanley Dreyfus, David N. Power, Michael A. Signer, Janet Walton, and Mark Searle.

The North Pole - BRUGT BOG - Erling Kagge - Bog - - Plusbog.dk

BRUGT BOG - OBS the book comes without the dust jacket The epic, dangerous adventure story of humanity’s obsession with the North Pole, from Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge who travelled there in 1990‘Extraordinary’ ANNE APPLEBAUM • ‘Thrilling . . . a record of an infatuation’ THE TELEGRAPH • ‘The book of a lifetime’ ELIF SHAFAK • ‘Bracing’ THE TIMES • ‘The North Pole proves to be the perfect subject for him’ MICHAEL PALIN Throughout recorded human time, few places on Earth have inspired as much fascination as the North Pole. This is an otherworldly place where the sun rises and stays aloft for six whole months before setting, plunging the expanse of ice and water into darkness for half a year.Foot-stepping alongside Erling Kagge, who ventured to the North Pole in the spring of 1990, we hear the story of the North Pole as never told before. From Herodotus who first wondered what the northernmost point of our planet might be like, to the intrepid early cartographers who mapped the world, and the legendary expeditions led by Fridtjof Nansen and Robert Peary – the first polar explorer global celebrities – who were in the grip of a dangerous obsession to get to the North Pole first. What emerges is a new history of the world, spanning thousands of years, as seen from the ‘silver-shining vacantness’ of the North Pole.Blending memories from Kagge’s own 1990 trip with this epic history, The North Pole is an adventure story, a book about enacting hidden human dreams, about difficult fathers and their difficult sons, and a psychological record of what it means to keep putting one foot in front of the other in the face of adversity. It is for anyone who’s gazed out at the horizon – and wondered what happens if you just keep walking. ‘A beautiful book’ ALAIN DE BOTTON ''As an explorer Erling Kagge is world class; as a writer he is equally gifted’ RANULPH FIENNES
