Det 5.500 m2 store bunkeranlæg blev først skrevet ud af det stående beredskab i 2012 og står i dag fuldt funktionsdygtigt med radiorum, ministerkontorer, krypteringsrum, dagligstue, lægeklinik og sovesale. Alt er intakt – fra de store dieselmotorer i maskinrummet over Arne Jacobsen stolene og Nato Fortroligt-stemplerne i regeringsrummene til Nordisk Fjer sengetøjet i regentens beskedne soveværelse. Bogen tager i billeder og ord læseren med på en unik rejse ind i denne hemmelige tidslomme fra Den Kolde Krig.

Alligevel er det værd at dvæle ved tiden før 1871, for den todelte by (Berlin og Cölln), Hohenzollernslægten og Preussen viser sig i gammel bymur, slotte og kirker, der spiller sammen med den moderne metropol. Udviklingen ses ikke kun i bygninger, men også i det, der er blevet tilintetgjort og fjernet. For regimeskifter, jødeforfølgelser og ødelæggelser under 2. verdenskrig har ført til heftige diskussioner om erindringer. Hvilke bygninger skulle rives ned? Hvilke skulle repræsentere den nye tid? Hvilke mindesmærker skulle opføres? Kampen om historien er meget synlig i Berlin.
