In spring 2020, coronavirus began spreading throughout the world and in many places people were subjected to quarantine. It was then that Hiyoli Togawa, a violist, proposed that the BIS record label release a viola disc entitled Songs of Solitude of short compositions by different contemporary composers, as a sort of reflection of the present time and offering comfort to listeners in their solitude. Hiyoli asked Kalevi Aho (b. 1949) to compose a piece in which she could play and sing simultaneously. The meditative, melancholy Am Horizont is dedicated to Hiyoli Togawa and composed in April 2020. The setting of Padre Pio's Prayer is after Communion. It was commissioned by the Genesis Foundation and first performed by The Sixteen, conducted by Harry Christophers, in June 2008 at Westminster Cathedral, London, and recorded under the CORO label. Padre Pio (1887-1968), in his lifetime a controversial and holy man, was canonised St. Pius of Pietrelcina in 2002. He is known unofficially as 'the patron saint of stress relief', in accord with his most famous dictum, 'Pray, hope and don't worry.' A powerful setting by James MacMillan of his own English version of Pio's original Italian text, the work is suitable for both service and concert use. Clarence Williams (1893 - 1965) was an American jazz musician, who tried his hand (successfully) in almost all spheres of the music industry: he was known as a pianist, composer, promoter, vocalist, theatrical producer, and publisher. Having run away from home at age 12 to join a travelling show, he settled in New Orleans and became a well-regarded entertainer, while also composing new songs. After touring as a musician, he started a music publishing company and a record label, producing and participating in early recordings by Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Bessie Smith, Virginia Liston, Irene Scruggs, and many others. The Clarence Williams Collection – Volume 3 covers Williams' prolific output from 1929-30. Transferred and re-mastered by John R.T. Davis, the sound quality is outstanding.

The 15 tunes (69 min.) on this CD were recorded live in concert in Denver, Colorado, in 1966. Six of the numbers have never been previously released; the rest were originally released on LP on the Pumpkin record label. Don Ewell plays stride piano, strongly influenced by Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. The repertoire on the CD is based on compositions by the great stride pianists Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and Earl Hines.Don Ewell did not do much recording and therefore, as prominent jazz journalist Alun Morgan says: "We are fortunate to have this (CD) representing Don Ewell at his best." Ewell, himself, was very pleased that night in Denver, Colorado; everything was right:the atmosphere, the piano, the recording and, not least of all - the band and the music. Besides being a great stride piano player, Ewell could definitely play the blues - just listen to his version of "See See Rider" on this CD

Creme Fraiche Big Band was the creation of Danish trumpeter Lars Togeby, and this is their only recording, very rare on LP, and re-released on CD here for the first time.The music blends modern big-band sounds with avant garde, latin and funk, where the rhythm group plays a central role. All the tunes on this CD are composed and arranged by the band?s leader, Lars Togeby. Creme Fraiche existed for only a few years in the seventies, and the music on this CD was recorded in 1978. The band is comprised of the "creme" of Danish jazz musicians, plus the world-famous American trumpeter Tim Hagans ? who, at this time, was a young musician on his way up.Creme Fraiche was one of the most exciting modern "electric" jazz and funk big band in Europe in the seventies. The music on this CD is brilliantly performed with boundless energy, drive, and pulsing rhythm, and gives plenty of room for the exciting soloists. Bandleader Stan Kenton was very enthusiastic about Creme Fraiche and wanted to record the band on his own label.

Composer's Note: Given the long phrase lengths of Night , it is suggested that choirs Stagger breathing where necessary. The last page of the score requires some explanation. The singers should split into three separate groups: two equal SATB choirs and an SATB solo quartet. Each group sings their own music - each repetition being separated by a long pause - independent of the other groups. Thus, Choir I will begin and, as they finish, Choir II will commence etc. The music should continue for about two minutes, getting gradually quieter with each repetition. Though a common pulse should be kept, the groups begin each repetition as they wish: the music should overlap and blur. Against this, the solo Cello plays its fragments of melody. The choirs, at the conductor's discretion, should end in the order they began, leaving the cello to play its last notes as the echoes fade. Duration: 20 minutes

Apple label. Following his conversion to the Orthodox Church in 1977, his music moved in the direction of ever greater spirituality and intensity. He scored a popular success in 1989 with the Proms premiere of The Protecting Veil, followed by the production of his opera Mary of Egypt at the Aldeburgh Festival. His knighthood was announced in the Millennium Honours List. Later in 2000, he was the subject of a festival at the South Bank Centre. The Beatles: Love Me Do - 50th Anniversary Edition

Love Me Do was the first single to be released by The Beatles, on October 5 1962, backed with PS I Love You, on EMI?s Parlophone label. Though historically important as the début record by the world?s greatest ever pop group, it was by no stretch of the imagination a portent of what was to come, reaching only as high as number 17 in the Record Retailer?s Top 50 charts, on December 27. When Beatlemania exploded in the US, however, it became their fourth No. 1 there in May 1964.Curiously, the song was recorded by The Beatles on three separate occasions with three different percussionists; firstly on June 6, 1962, at an EMI session with original drummer Pete Best; secondly on September 4 with the newly-recruited Ringo Starr; and finally on September 11 with session drummer Andy White.For reasons that have never been fully explained, it was the version featuring Ringo that appeared on all UK single releases of Love Me Do up until its original deletion in 1968. The Beatles? 1963 debut album Please Please Me, however, featured the Andy White recording, which became the American hit in 1964 and other worldwide territories. When re-issued in 1976 EMI (UK) used the White take because the original Ringo master had gone AWOL. The 20th anniversary 12? single in 1982 contained both versions but the ?Ringo version? had to be dubbed from the original single supplied by a Beatles collector and all issues since have come from the same source. The Pete Best version was made available on Anthology 1.Love Me Do was largely a McCartney composition, written in the 1958, with Lennon contributing the bridge in 1962. "Love Me Do was our greatest philosophical song,? said Paul in 1972, possibly tongue in cheek. ?During the recordings, all I can remember is being terrified out of my wits, and quaking in my boots. I can still hear it on my vocal."
