In 1942 Glenn Miller voluntarily joined the army and founded the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band and with his music he kept up the morale of the troops. In December 1944 he boarded an aircraft in England that would never reach its destination (France) - the plane was never found. The patriotic legend of this great composer however lives on in his music. Pennsylvania 6-5000 was one of the greatest successes of his famous band and is as popular today as it was in the 1940s.

Harmonies poétiques et religieuses -Early versions : Suppl. 6

In Volume I/9 of the New Liszt Edition the definitive ten-movement version of the piano cycle Harmonies poétiques et religieuses was published in 1981. On several occasions Liszt mentioned that he attached particular importance to this cycle, and this is confirmed by the fact that he devoted almost two decades (1835-1853) to its composition. This Supplement volume of the New Liszt Edition initiates the reader into the mysteries of the cycle's genesis, publishing 17 completed pieces written for it and 6 that have survived as fragments, together with the album leaves belonging to them. The works composed between 1840 and 1848 also reflect the various concepts of the cycle and theprior history of the movements included in the final version, more than one shows Liszt's skill as an improviser. Among the compositions that survive in manuscript there are gems such as the hitherto virtually unknown Piano piece in G flat major, conceived in a moment of unselfconscious happiness.

The edition includes all of Beethoven's known letters (1,789 items of primary correspondence), all obtainable letters written to him (370items of secondary correspondence) and numerous documents written on Beethoven's behalf by third parties (163 items of tertiary correspondence). It provides the text in a diplomatic transcription critically corroborated againstthe original sources, including deleted passages, addresses and drafts. The texts are presented in chronological order in six volumes and are made readily accessible by a seventh volume containing indices of names, places, works,senders, recipients, and text incipits as well as a list of sources and concordances to other editions of Beethoven's letters.
